1st fail Someone failed to alert the Railroad of the incident near the tracks, 2nd fail, with 4 tracks there why the hell would you park a fire truck over 3 of them, thats just stupid!
Although the fire truck operator was obviously to blame (and the policeman as well), what happened to the whistle blasts (two longs, one short, two longs) required by all trains when approaching a vehicle or pedestrian intersection? Maybe that warning would have been enough or maybe we just didn't hear that on the tape, maybe it was done but not recorded on the video we're being shown. Maybe it WAS that warning that got the drivers into the truck and police car.
DDDDUUUHHHH way to go Detroit Fire, what a way smash up a new truck. My husband was on this train and all he could do is shake his head and say "idiots". His biggest question was why didn't they contact the railroad and state they were blocking the tracks.... there is an 800 number on every arm rail at every crossing........
@jll48167 Yeah, it was the Detroit's Fire and Police department's fault for failing to notify the train dispatcher to report that Amtrak train that they are parked on the tracks. Now it's going to cost almost $600k to get a new truck. Something that Detroit's taxpayers will certainly not like it at all.
DDDDUUUHHHH way to go Detroit Fire, what a way smash up a new truck. My husband was on this train and all he could do is shake his head and say "idiots".
Many years ago in Blasdell NY a fire crew was at work and they had stretched the fire hoses across the railway lines from the burning building to the hydrant. Needless to say the next train through (this was a main railway line so they should have known better) cut the hoses and the building burnt to the ground.
out of all the places to park he had to park on the railroad tracks. in the DFD's defense something tells me a combination of getting to the hurt victims fast, tunnel vision and adrenaline accounted for this error of judgment. also this looks like a busy intersection with the accident crossing side so it might have been the only place to park at the time. still it was a pretty dumb move that could have cost someone their life
theres always the alternatives. Either the fd/pd failed to notify the railroad or railroad failed to notify train. a neighboring fire co. lost a section of 5"after a commuter train ran it over during a working structure fire. FD notified railroad 30+ minutes prior to trains arrival.
The Ladder company had been out checking hydrants when they came upon the car accident. They had never actually been dispatched to it. The Lt. (company officer) had actually ordered the FEO to park the ladder on the tracks. After a (very) brief investigation, the Lt. was fired from the job. He had a past history of disiplinary action. The FEO was demoted to firefighter but remains on the job.
I wonder if they could install crossing cams. Then send a video signal from the cams to the approaching trains cab at a given distance to give them more an advance look. Especially at blind curves. I know there is a cam monitoring the draw here in Stuart. I've seen it going down and stop when someone tries to push it and make it through. I was told it wasn't a manned bridge, but I know it is visually monitored som
@DTrainzz Who is "they". What kind of budget does "they" have to do this. Assuming "they" is the city, do you really want your taxpayer dollars to go to purchasing and maintaining such equipment both in the many crossings and in the mutliple locomotives that would have to be equiped.
Personally I do not want my taxpayer dollars going to something like this!
@Boss302fan THEY ARE THE OPERATORS OF THE RAILWAY. And THEY pay taxes and provide many jobs and those jobs have people doing them and they pay taxes. Yet suggesting the railway cam the gate they approach, has nothing to do with the city, or blowing the taxes on crap. It is so hard to stop on short notice like this. But increasing safety for citizens in high density areas is not a bad idea to pass on to the operators who want to make money rolling millions of pounds and tons along rails here.
@DTrainzz The railroad in almost all cases were there before the roadways. So why should the railroad pay so that citizens can cross their lines safely. It isn't the responsibility of the railroad to protect citizens, but the citizens themselves. Railroads in the US simply cannot afford to provide this protection. It is incredibly expensive. It is up to the city to provide protection for its citizens when they are going to cross the private property owned by others.
@Boss302fan Besides taxes go to pay for old farts to get free viagra and there is nothing I can do about it. And I don't loose any sleep about it. How much did the tax payers loose when that driver put the engine onto the track?. Then how much did they have to pay to get another one? If a accident happens, how much taxes are spent on the case in the courts? Just saying they need to make it as safe as possible and these days we have a lot of tech that could make it happen. It can save life & $.
@DTrainzz The expenses you use as examples are valid ones and are taken into consideration when communities decide if they are going to spend $250,000 on one single road crossing protection system....or spend it on something else. Obviously the number of times in this century in North America when a fireman parked his damn truck on the tracks in exceedingly rare and not worth the risk. Andb many communities find the 250k expense better spent elsewhere.
@Boss302fan A quarter million is way more than it would cost to monitor each crossing, but there has been nuts and bolts sold for millions on this planet, but that is fraud. And I agree not to many park fire engines on crossings, fortunately. Yet there are all sorts of ways the crossings get fouled. Industry stopped automatic garage doors from closing on stuff, I figure there has to be a way to give a heads up a little more in advance to people if a busy crossing is fouled.
@DTrainzz The quarter million is the average cost of equipping large crossings with gates, flashers, etc. It's not a guess but actual figures. If there are other means of "monitoring" crossings of this nature I'm sure the cities would look into them if available.
And yes, you are absolutely correct. it's not just firetrucks.
The Fire Department should think about where they park. They should of thought that if they parked on the tracks a train could come, and one did. Also, the police car on the tracks as well. Stupid! That's what happens when you don't think. We pay taxes for the emergency services and for the amount we pay them we expect proffesionalism from them, and this is the outcome. There was already one serious emergency, this could have ended up as a second. People could have been killed. Rediculous.
For my senior design project, I'm going to be working on an advanced warning system that will warn engineers of parked vehicles or other objects on the tracks at grade crossings. Hopefully it will prevent something like this
In the words of an engineer: "You can't fix stupid." The fact is that 99% of the general population will do something stupid around trains or tracks at least once in their life. The best I can do is try to help, because saying "that's another idiot knocked out of the gene pool" kinda looks bad.
Why the hell were they on the tracks, and could have notified them, by dispatch, I mean crazy, could have been worse, I see the police was watchful, thank God, because he moved very quick, fire truck got rear ended hard by P42, sucks, Train wins, but thats crazy and dangerous, could have been worse though

How stupid can you be?
Signals activate minimum 25 seconds BEFORE train arrival.
Enough time to remove truck from foul.
Why was it not?
Police officer is lucky another train was not coming from opposite direction.

You'd think these city employees would have better common sense wouldn't you?
I see cops do this and I see other city workers do this including bus drivers.
I mean they enforce the laws to not do this but then they don't force it on themselves.
If this isn't evidence enough that even the ones who enforce the law break it then I don't know what is.
