the b1 is such a badass bomber, here in michigan we used to heat treat the 8ft ball screws that make the wings open and close, its cool knowing i contributed somwhat, not really but
This video won't impress any informed expert. The segments showing several bombs falling were all small tactical bombs that don't fit with the mission this aircraft was designed to do. The B-1 is not much faster than the B-52, and carries only 2/3 the payload. The B-1 is a dud that was resurrected by Reagan after Carter canceled it. It is beautiful and graceful, but not worth the money we paid for it.
Most importantly, when the B1-B was put into service to assume the role of delivering atomic weapons on target inthe Soviet Union, it can fly low-level penetration at >500 kts vs 250 kts for the BUFF
What you say is true, but mission planners found that no bomber can fly 500 knots and open the bomb bay and drop or deliver the payload. They also found that the payload of fuel was difficult to manage in a mission profile because of the weight and balance issues when the bombs were dropped.. The B-52 didn't loose balance, but the B-1 couldn't drop bombs until fuel depleted to certain levels and restricted the missions to a geographical alley that Russian were able to defend with SAMs.
The only way that the B-1 could have it's versatility was to reduce payload to 2/3 of the B-52 so it could serve more mission profile varieties. The capabilities of speed and payload were met, but mission profiles were not supportable by those factors. The USN with Tomahawks can cover the roles that B-1's thought they had. B-1's are elegant, but in combat, they are very restricted.
@sailordiver2007 you mean in bombing they are restricted but what about being intercept by missile or anther fighter. Also it young and only one Variant in service. B-52 work bust if their not worried about being shot out of the sky. One can see that b-1 trade some things for survivability. After all a Plus the next upgrade if ever done will make capable of dog fighting from a distance and just fast as any fighter.
@sailordiver2007, no, no, no! At the begiing of a campaign it is the least risky choice to go in with you B-2 and F-117 bombers to take out the enemy's radar defenses. You then use Tomahawks to take out the missile and air defense sites. Once a long range first strike nuclear platform, the B-1B's role is now to enter the theater (after all the defense systems have been destroyed) and deliver precision (or non precision) munitions to any adversary anywhere in the world.
@gman1868 Your numbers are correct, but they don't apply to actual mission planning. Defense contractors created scenarios where their birds would satisfy a design requirement and perform well, but in actual missions, planners discovered some serious limitations that weren't figured in the testing scenario. Lots of work--arounds were developed, but they often fell short and disappointed congressional budgeting analysts who were approached for more funding. The B-1 is beautiful & elegant.
@gman1868, the official website for the US Air Force has a fact sheet on the B-1B that says that the payload weight is 70,000 lbs. It also says that the B-1's top speed is 900 mph (about 782 kts or Mach 1.2). The B-1B is much faster and has a higher payload capability than the B-52. That's because it was designed to be that way.
@sailordiver2007 I remember Rockwell, Columbus (OH) and working out on East 5th Avenue when it was considered THE place to work. Assigned to the weapons bay, the nacelles and later the bulkhead of the space shuttle the place had the best insurance pkg on the planet and excellent wages. Jim Chandler headed up the M/E Dept where a young buck by the name of Leon Panetta worked along with other Manufacturing Engineers. Everything changed when Boeing came in and 7,000 Columbus folk lost jobs.
@sailordiver2007, dropping bombs 200 ft off the deck at near Mach speed and then taking off while doing a barrel roll is pretty impressive for a bomber. Let's see them do that with a B-2 or a B-52.
I worked on the B1-B at Rockwell, Columbus ,Ohio. We built the F.I.F, W.C.T., Top deck and engine nacelles. Also worked at Dyes Air Force Base in Abilene,Texas to correct fuel leaks. First worked on bomber in 1984.
Hey I'm doing a project on this plane (B1-B). Does anyone know where I'd be able to get some info on the max L/D for this airplane, as well as perhaps what the drag polar looks like for this plane?? Thanks alot
I think as a long range bomber the blackjack beats out the lancer, but with the new weapons technology that the U.S. has put in the b-1's they are more powerful than a tu-160. Russia just reactivated a few tu-160 batallions(going on memory not sure if batallions) and they are upgrading the tu-160's also.
I made the wings for the B1 here in Maryland,at the Martin Marietta(then) plant here in Baltimore,in the 80's. Now its called Lockhead Martin. In 1990 Pres. Reagan had a cutback in Defense,so no more money pumping in to build military weapons, and 1500 of us were laid-off from work. This bomber didn't see much action, and just before the contract ended to build these,it was already superseded by the B2.
Does anybody out there know who the Pres was that asked that the B1 be built???Another American azz kicking piece of hardware...We in America practice "inclusion" meaning we include all islamo-nutbags to be on the receiving end of the B1 regardless of race creed or color. DIE RAGHEADS DIE
the B-2 bomber owns, and so does the SR-71 (i think thats wut it was called) but they are soooo expensive its cheaper to send sum ppl over to that country as refugees and get them to start planting improvised bombs, but I guess u cant really use that to take down a military base or sumthin
Special Needs? I don't think so. I think all the screwed up countries like Iran, North Korea, and China need some napalm for breakfast to show them who is in charge of this world. USA rules!!!
"you give americans a bad reputation".. lol.. thats the funniest thing i ever read :D.. americans dont need anybody to help them get a bad reputation ;)
i dont have bad attitude, i dont like americans, like 99 % of the world.. we all know americans are responsible for the humanity dying of pollution because of their stupidity, we all know that americans are fat mc donald eaters ;)
oh and my english is better than yours even if its not my forst language ;)
I find these comments very entertaining. Thank God for Youtube, where miserable people whose voices were never important can now make their opinions known to everyone no matter how ignorant they may be. I guess it would comply to modern psychological belief to blame all your problems on a single source or scapegoat.

Unfortunately, you are mistaken.
Max Speed
B-52: 560 kts B1-B: 747 kts
Max Payload
B-52: 70,000lbs B1-B: 133,800lbs
