  • thanks that is the best i have ever seen it explained. all these years the tabs make it so much harder.

  • @dolphinzrwj1 - thx dude!

  • That its great!! Reb is like in my top 10 guitarists. Allthough he does use his pinky for this song but he RARELY even uses his pinky most of the time which I think is so amazing.

  • Hey i saw maveric. And goose in back ground !!!!!

  • @PRSwannaB - haha

  • Nice helicopters man

  • why playing plays everyone e flat?

  • still not right...but well, nice try

  • watch?v=Cj6oxgyjU0g&feature=related....from 6:20 - 6:45 he himself shows you exactly how he does it

  • the chord you are playin gis a "suspended" chord, not sustained..meaning there is no 3rd in the chord to define if it is major or minor..first E chord with the pinky playing the note on the 10th fret of the B string is an E "suspended" 4th...w/ the pinky on the 11th fet of the G string is an E "suspended" 2nd..hope this helps

  • dude, amazing. I never thought to move my pinky over to that other spot in the intro, made it so much easier to play, AND sounds better

  • @FLOOKGUITAR - great to hear!

  • No such thing as a "sustained" chord.

  • Wow dude! Nice! THANK YOU! This is soooooo much easier than the tabs I found!

  • @MoR4TeLoViN - thanks!

  • Good stuff, dude! I bought one of those play-along, book-cd from the guitar shop a while back with this song on it, as well as the full backing track. About 99% is similar to the tab, not that the book is correct, but this is very close to Reb's playing & I use nearly the same rhythm structure as yours, so this is definitely an 'A' in my book. Cheers!

  • Man the same happened to me.

I've learn wrong way by the tab a long long time ago!

And i always had that feeling that the action was not right.

Then i watched Reb playing that riff on his video from the 90 s and i figured out to!

The only thing that he does differently of what you said is that he finishes with the A5 on the E String, cause then he just goes back to the E major and plays it all again!

  • Good job...

  • Thanks for the lesson, it's sounds fine when you play it, therefore, it cannot be wrong. :) Any chance you could do a lesson on the rest of the song? I'm not worried about the solo though.

  • You should make a power tab or a guitar pro file... I know it would help me a lot

  • Little bit dirty, it's seems to me...))

  • Very nice work. Very helpful, Thanx man!

  • Awesome - I love this riff and you debunked it! Thanks, dude!

  • Sus means Suspended :) but it kinda looks like an E9 and a D9 tho... I believe thats what they're called... cba to think about my theory now xD

  • So basically your pinky plays the melody. Great lesson dude. Seventeen is a killer song. Does Winger tune down a half step? I can't remember =/

  • @Harmony0fdissonance - Thanks dude. Yes, half step down for the all the albums up to Pull. IV and Karma are a whole step down. Peace

  • By George, I think you nailed it! Sounds great and makes total sense. Thanks for the post!!!

  • is hard

  • I had no idea how difficult this inane song was to play! Awesome work!

  • The whole song is tricky. By no means is this your typical rock n roll song.

  • dude u fucking nailed it ,we need more post from guys like you

  • Is he hitting the ppalm muted bass notes? I can't see his ppicking hand.

  • Sustain? Suspended.

  • Thanks dude...

  • omg, it's really easier to play it without your pinky, and playing it with your barred first finger.

  • Yay, thanks for breaking it down, helps much! Which Pickups are you using? EMG 85/89 and SAs?

I like that sound , keep on rocking!

Just a little Trick: Put some kind of foam between the Body and the Springs of the Tremolo to Dampen the strings. Then the "metallic" ringing off gets away!

    Jerri

  • Thanks man. I thought I was playing it right and you totally opened it up for me. Good work.

  • Dude that was the best lesson! I have seen and played this many ways since the tune has come out and you gave a great lesson on how to play the tune. Don't listen to the educated idiots out there. If you play the tune and someone knows the title you have nailed it. You never implied you were copying it note for note. There are hundreds of ways to get to any destination. Educated idiots will always tell you their way is the best. Your lesson made playing that riff much easier.

  • Thanks for the positive comment!

  • Great job...Thanks!

  • fuck i wrote some of my 11s as 7s sorry hope you can figure it out

  • It is wrong. You need to load this riff into a DAW and stretch it down to slow speed, and find out the notes you're leaving out.

This may sound harsh, but quite simply, you're not in a position as a player to teach anyone a "lesson". Get a metronome and learn rythym.

  • Funny thing is...that Reb Beach emailed me personaly to tell me how cool it was that I took the time to do this ( even if its not perfect ). I think his opinion matters more!

  • doesnt mean that it is right, he just means its is nice you are trying.

  • im just a regular guy with a hobby. im not a professional nor do claim to be so if u want to listen to reb play this song watch his videos. people need to lighten up. its just for fun.

  • Can we see you play a tab version several times, then play your version several times at speed so we can really notice the difference.

  • Great lesson but its a suspended chord "sus" not sustain

  • Wow! You are a great teacher.

I also was confused by the tabs, but you made the riff much easier to master!

  • thanks!

  • are u playing the bass notes in between the chords?

  • This is a great video, by the way what kind of guitar is that? Thanks.

  • It's an Ibanez WRB3. It has the Winger "Sahara" graphic and was only made in Japan in limited quantities ( < 100 ).

  • A few things I'm hearing different in Beach's riff, but I'll have to work them out. Still, this is much better than anything else I've seen depicting how to play this. Awesome job!

  • Thanks dude.

  • Two things: Number one, you're playing that bass note as a pedal tone, which I'm fairly sure is just mishearing. I don't think Reb Beach actually plays the bass note between every chord, I think it's either Kip Winger or what's-his-nuts. Or just notes you think you're hearing because they "should" be there. Number two, right before you switch to the D, that last pull-off from the whole pinky on the 11 maneuver, you're not playing the major third which is the note that should ring clearest

  • How you picking that with your right hand?

    thanks~!

  • are you dropped a half step?

  • yes

  • this song is so hard, the solo is actually the easiest bit in my opinion. the riff pisses me off

  • It isn't a 'sustain chord' it is a suspended chord. Good video, not much on YT in the way of learning these older metal tunes. I think though by watching you play it you are pretty much right on.

  • Tabbers suck. "whatever that note is over there". Wow. Learn to play, not to follow tabs. You play and sound like and idiot. I figured this out after listening to the song once. You don't even know notes and chords. You call G's C's. G is obviously a 5th of C, which is what you are calling it since you are playing on the 4th string on the 5th fret, but calling it the "C area", it's a G moron. Glad I saw this vid, reminds me how much I don't suck. Fuck you tabbers in the heart.

  • I'm glad i saw this comment. Reminds me of all the other mindless troll know-it-alls on youtube who pick apart videos for this and that. Who cares, i learned from it, other people have too. Great video def, 5 stars.

  • Some of the greatest guitarist in the world have no clue what a C or G is. The best playing is in the ears not the eyes.

  • "Dooges," you sound like a fucking douchebag, people like you who talk shit are usually the ones who can't play for shit.

  • Hey DoogesR1 dick breath, if you're so awesome at guitar, why haven't you uploaded any guitar videos on Youtube? Upload a video and show us how awesome you are at guitar or you're just another fagot douchebag.

  • A douch? He's a douch? What the fuck's a douch you douche?

  • that helped a ton!!

  • Is that reb beaches guitar?

  • No, it's not his personal guitar...its one of a rare batch of custom shop Ibanez'es made as part of his signature collection. They were only released in Japan.

  • I read about those guitars. How did you manage to get one? Only 100 were made!

  • I scoured the internet for the guitar until I found a posting from a guy in Malaysia who had one! Pretty insane...I never thought I'd actually get the guitar. I actually ended up selling it.

  • dude, nice vid,but give strings and fret numbers for people like me who never payed attention to note letters.

theres alot of us out there

  • Very reminiscent of Lay it Down isn't it?

Anyway, at 2:40 those are called double stops.

Anyway, your version of Seventeen is a bit off. Like most people you're drowning that little "plucky" passage that leads into the move to the 5th fret with too much low E. Try alernating the 11th fret/G string and 9th fret/D string, then hammer on from the 7th fret/B string to 9th fret/B string...and finally slide down to the 7th fret/B string and you're in place :).

  • I think what also screws people up is, the opening riff is almost but not exactly the same as the rest of the song when he goes back to that main riff. At least on the original recording. Live, it looks and sounds like he plays the same way with that main riff throughout the song.

  • hey man, u bloody legend!!, can u please tab this out on ultimate-guitar please, it sounds wiked as

  • Hey dude, there are short, sticatto hunks in the intro chord playing to the song with muting. Listen to it again.

  • you have your finger on 5th fret on a string thats a D not C

  • nice,rock on

  • It's called "suspended", not 'sustained'...

  • thanks for this man. it really helped me out alot :)

  • Thanks man, can u write it to guitar pro?

  • What's guitar pro?

  • A computer programme used to write tabs.

  • You Are Amazing ! Thanks Man !!! Very Much !!

  • Sorry Dude, I'm not sure I have it perfect myself but this is wrong. If I can find some time to figure out how to post a you tube video, I will post my version although I play it slower then actual speed

  • Dude that is soo not wrong. Ur Tone Deaf!

  • dude..awesome video

they always mess up the tabs so thats why i never use them...:D

  • Great job on the vid, easy to follow and it helped me out a lot!

  • Ya its the Winger graphic. I actually sold the guitar a few weeks ago. I have 2 other Reb Beach guitars and I wanted a Les Paul.

  • Guitar sounds cool. Thanks for the lesson. I was a teen when that song came out and had the hardest time with that riff. Is that the Winger graphic on the body?

  • Can anybody tell me where I can find the correct tab for this song?

  • Holy Compression Batman

  • it's helped.

thanks for you time and effort!

  • Sus means suspended...

  • This definitely makes more sense. Thanks a million!

  • yes tab is very wrong because it even says in 99% of the mags that it was tabbed by piano players....... go figure..

  • you have to show your picking hand i dont know what your doing.

  • ya, i have to put up a better version....people on youtube say I have a weird way of holding a pick...lol

  • like marty friedman weird?

  • ya, that's what they said! I think its bc I have a heavy attack and I try to get harmonics into my playing as often as possible.

  • hey man,, don't worry about the haters,, i appreciate you for sharing your thoughts on the song, you said "heres an easier way to learn the main riff", which is what some of us need,, i'll figure out the rest of the song as i get better ,, thx again

  • Tab on the internet is almost always wrong. Even some of the tab in the Guitar mags is wrong though is usually far more reliable. Still, learning songs by ear is the absolute BEST way to learn as it builds the ear for harmony and intervals, which takes you much farther. I've known "tab addicts" who can not learn a song without tab, which is quite limiting.

  • is that Ibanez WRB-3 ??

    wow :9

  • Yup, I'm still amazed I was able to track one down. I had the red one too but sold it bc it was silly have 2 of the same guitars.

  • wow !!

    i use ibanez RG 450 yer is 1993 :)

  • that's called a "suspended 4th". the hard part about this riff is getting the phase diction accurate in the first 2 bars melody between the sus4, maj3, and sus2 just before you change position to D5/Dmaj. Most guys slop their way through this phrase and it always leaves the riff feeling incomplete and loose, when the real version should feel tight and syncopated. The main melody uses chords that are referred to as suspensions, not sustain chords.

  • *scratches head*

    HUH?????

  • I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU ABOUT THE TABS. WE ARE BOTH IN THE SAME BOAT WITH THIS SONG. i learned it on a tab and it totaly sucked. so im trying to re learn it. you in standard or Eb

  • nvm i figured it out. thats was a retarded question to ask

  • Eb...hope the video helps!

  • Thanks bro. Nice riff. That's my experience with tabs, it's close but you need to tweak 'em quite often. Thanks!

  • the power tab version is nothing short of confusing! I think I can play your version. It is such an awesome song.

  • not correct - but close.

    nice job

  • sus is suspended

  • You're playing a simplified version of the riff.

  • Dude... THANK you... your right about those tabs... they CONFUSE ME! =D thanks muchness!

  • nice job dude.

  • Excellent instruction! The tabs I have seen are very frustrating. I literally picked it up in a matter of minutes after watching your video. Thanks again!!! By any chance, can you post a video breaking down the solo for this song?

  • I actually cant play that last tapping run...I still dont know how he gets that fluid legato tapping sound.

  • Because he sold his soul to Satan.

  • lol...you may be right about that.

  • No problem. I agree, the last tapping run is a bitch in the solo. I think I concur with revolutionday1's comment....lol. Thanks again for sharing the opening riffs with us!

  • Dude your missing some middle notes there in between the two main chords of the riff.Good Work

  • Sounds Great I'll have to try it on my Line 6

  • Esus = E suspension :) a little theory for you.

  • hey finally i found someone that knows how to play this song. i always seach for this tab.

thanks guy this video helps me a lot.

  • Thanks! I have been waiting for this.

  • great sound man.... what kinda amp ya using?

  • Line 6 Flextone III on the "Insane" channel. Line 6 makes a good stuff but I don't think this amp can compete with tube amp.

  • well put, nothing line 6 makes can even imitate a real tube amp.

    great vid btw

  • Yeah I think you're right..I mean..some people say that with thick distortion it tube doesn't really make a difference but, I think it still does. I have a line-6 spider 2 halfstack and I like it but, I'd much rather have an all tube marshall..or better yet an organge but..well who can afford that. How do you like the line-6 stuff?

  • This how I explained to my friend the other day. No matter what type of guitar you plug in to a Line 6 it always sounds basically the same...everything unique about the instrument...wood...pick ups..gets completely negated. But for the money you are getting an amp that sounds decent and is packed with fx.

  • thanks for putting this into YouTube - i will try this myself.

    best regards

    Berndt (Hamburg, Germany)

  • Thanks for making a normally difficult riff into nothing to bad at all!

  • Dude, that was awesome! That and what Reb said in the forum should do the trick! Thanks again!!

    - Jamie P

  • thanks!! you rock!!

  • cool helicopters alex. you crazy guy!!! very nice video!!

  • I have a huge vintage 1980's GI Joe collection...I can't believe I just admitted that on the Web!
