That its great!! Reb is like in my top 10 guitarists. Allthough he does use his pinky for this song but he RARELY even uses his pinky most of the time which I think is so amazing.
the chord you are playin gis a "suspended" chord, not sustained..meaning there is no 3rd in the chord to define if it is major or minor..first E chord with the pinky playing the note on the 10th fret of the B string is an E "suspended" 4th...w/ the pinky on the 11th fet of the G string is an E "suspended" 2nd..hope this helps
Good stuff, dude! I bought one of those play-along, book-cd from the guitar shop a while back with this song on it, as well as the full backing track. About 99% is similar to the tab, not that the book is correct, but this is very close to Reb's playing & I use nearly the same rhythm structure as yours, so this is definitely an 'A' in my book. Cheers!
I've learn wrong way by the tab a long long time ago!
And i always had that feeling that the action was not right.
Then i watched Reb playing that riff on his video from the 90 s and i figured out to!
The only thing that he does differently of what you said is that he finishes with the A5 on the E String, cause then he just goes back to the E major and plays it all again!
Thanks for the lesson, it's sounds fine when you play it, therefore, it cannot be wrong. :) Any chance you could do a lesson on the rest of the song? I'm not worried about the solo though.
Yay, thanks for breaking it down, helps much! Which Pickups are you using? EMG 85/89 and SAs?
I like that sound , keep on rocking!
Just a little Trick: Put some kind of foam between the Body and the Springs of the Tremolo to Dampen the strings. Then the "metallic" ringing off gets away!
Dude that was the best lesson! I have seen and played this many ways since the tune has come out and you gave a great lesson on how to play the tune. Don't listen to the educated idiots out there. If you play the tune and someone knows the title you have nailed it. You never implied you were copying it note for note. There are hundreds of ways to get to any destination. Educated idiots will always tell you their way is the best. Your lesson made playing that riff much easier.
Funny thing is...that Reb Beach emailed me personaly to tell me how cool it was that I took the time to do this ( even if its not perfect ). I think his opinion matters more!
im just a regular guy with a hobby. im not a professional nor do claim to be so if u want to listen to reb play this song watch his videos. people need to lighten up. its just for fun.
A few things I'm hearing different in Beach's riff, but I'll have to work them out. Still, this is much better than anything else I've seen depicting how to play this. Awesome job!
Two things: Number one, you're playing that bass note as a pedal tone, which I'm fairly sure is just mishearing. I don't think Reb Beach actually plays the bass note between every chord, I think it's either Kip Winger or what's-his-nuts. Or just notes you think you're hearing because they "should" be there. Number two, right before you switch to the D, that last pull-off from the whole pinky on the 11 maneuver, you're not playing the major third which is the note that should ring clearest
It isn't a 'sustain chord' it is a suspended chord. Good video, not much on YT in the way of learning these older metal tunes. I think though by watching you play it you are pretty much right on.
Tabbers suck. "whatever that note is over there". Wow. Learn to play, not to follow tabs. You play and sound like and idiot. I figured this out after listening to the song once. You don't even know notes and chords. You call G's C's. G is obviously a 5th of C, which is what you are calling it since you are playing on the 4th string on the 5th fret, but calling it the "C area", it's a G moron. Glad I saw this vid, reminds me how much I don't suck. Fuck you tabbers in the heart.
I'm glad i saw this comment. Reminds me of all the other mindless troll know-it-alls on youtube who pick apart videos for this and that. Who cares, i learned from it, other people have too. Great video def, 5 stars.
Hey DoogesR1 dick breath, if you're so awesome at guitar, why haven't you uploaded any guitar videos on Youtube? Upload a video and show us how awesome you are at guitar or you're just another fagot douchebag.
No, it's not his personal guitar...its one of a rare batch of custom shop Ibanez'es made as part of his signature collection. They were only released in Japan.
I scoured the internet for the guitar until I found a posting from a guy in Malaysia who had one! Pretty insane...I never thought I'd actually get the guitar. I actually ended up selling it.
Anyway, your version of Seventeen is a bit off. Like most people you're drowning that little "plucky" passage that leads into the move to the 5th fret with too much low E. Try alernating the 11th fret/G string and 9th fret/D string, then hammer on from the 7th fret/B string to 9th fret/B string...and finally slide down to the 7th fret/B string and you're in place :).
I think what also screws people up is, the opening riff is almost but not exactly the same as the rest of the song when he goes back to that main riff. At least on the original recording. Live, it looks and sounds like he plays the same way with that main riff throughout the song.
Sorry Dude, I'm not sure I have it perfect myself but this is wrong. If I can find some time to figure out how to post a you tube video, I will post my version although I play it slower then actual speed
Guitar sounds cool. Thanks for the lesson. I was a teen when that song came out and had the hardest time with that riff. Is that the Winger graphic on the body?
hey man,, don't worry about the haters,, i appreciate you for sharing your thoughts on the song, you said "heres an easier way to learn the main riff", which is what some of us need,, i'll figure out the rest of the song as i get better ,, thx again
Tab on the internet is almost always wrong. Even some of the tab in the Guitar mags is wrong though is usually far more reliable. Still, learning songs by ear is the absolute BEST way to learn as it builds the ear for harmony and intervals, which takes you much farther. I've known "tab addicts" who can not learn a song without tab, which is quite limiting.
that's called a "suspended 4th". the hard part about this riff is getting the phase diction accurate in the first 2 bars melody between the sus4, maj3, and sus2 just before you change position to D5/Dmaj. Most guys slop their way through this phrase and it always leaves the riff feeling incomplete and loose, when the real version should feel tight and syncopated. The main melody uses chords that are referred to as suspensions, not sustain chords.
I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU ABOUT THE TABS. WE ARE BOTH IN THE SAME BOAT WITH THIS SONG. i learned it on a tab and it totaly sucked. so im trying to re learn it. you in standard or Eb

No problem. I agree, the last tapping run is a bitch in the solo. I think I concur with revolutionday1's comment....lol. Thanks again for sharing the opening riffs with us!
Yeah I think you're right..I mean..some people say that with thick distortion it tube doesn't really make a difference but, I think it still does. I have a line-6 spider 2 halfstack and I like it but, I'd much rather have an all tube marshall..or better yet an organge but..well who can afford that. How do you like the line-6 stuff?
This how I explained to my friend the other day. No matter what type of guitar you plug in to a Line 6 it always sounds basically the same...everything unique about the instrument...wood...pick ups..gets completely negated. But for the money you are getting an amp that sounds decent and is packed with fx.
thanks that is the best i have ever seen it explained. all these years the tabs make it so much harder.

It is wrong. You need to load this riff into a DAW and stretch it down to slow speed, and find out the notes you're leaving out.
This may sound harsh, but quite simply, you're not in a position as a player to teach anyone a "lesson". Get a metronome and learn rythym.
