She is a fiery jewel - one of my favorites. You can even hear pre-Johnny Thunders in her playing. Sleepy LaBeef turned me onto her - he about worships her.
I've been viewing several of her performances on You Tube and read her a little about her life.
The church embraced her gospel music until she released a couple of successful blues tunes. She was brokenhearted to discover many of her former gospel fans dissed her afterwards. She passed in 1973 (age 58), so many of us 20 & 30 something yr old gospel fans never grew up with her music.
If she were living today, I think gospel would very much embrace her just as it embraces Aretha Franklin.
talk about rock and roll she could rip that guitar. I love her style bluesy rocky gospel she encompassed the whole thing i'm gonna have to get an album of hers shes so inspiring. And derserves way more props!
God I wish I could find the full clip they excerpted in this show. I"ve got the other version, where she's fronting a male chorus, and it's extraordinary. But she's even more on fire in this one. The most exciting performer I've ever seen.
RIP George...and Sister Rosetta too!

who's the guy with the eye patch?

George Melly, died last year unfortunately.

Do you know why he has an eye patch? Fashion statement? (I have the impression that he was a little eccentric).
In his bio it mentions hearing loss, vascular dementia and emphysemia as late-life health problems but nothing about blindness etc.

I bet she kept that church packed!

I just stumbled on Sister Rosetta Tharpe and I am both thrilled and amazed, what a talented and gifted lady she was.
