Went on #5 California Zephyr from Omaha to Provo a few years ago.

A film will never do justice to this trip. It is something you have to experience. We have done it several times and never tire of it. People that travel by train are a special breed. It is always an adventure. Check with Amtrak about the flooding in Omaha Nebraska before you book.

I want to take the California Zephyr to California so bad. But I'm not sure if I could do two days on the train. I took it to Chicago from Iowa for a vacation trip this year and I loved it. I got lucky and only had a 2 hour delay into Chicago and 3 hour delay on the way back. It didn't bother me at all.

I'll have to talk it over with the wife and see if she's up for it. Sadly bringing the kid with us will not happen. She was out of control on the 8 hour trip. Don't want to think about 2 days.

Great video! We took the California Zephyr and then the Cardinal to Baltimore and back to the west coast. Unfortunately, I only had a digital still camera to capture video of the trip but I have the videos on my channel if you want to take a look. Next to driving across the country, Amtrak is the very best way to see America.

My wife and I have been on the CZ many times between Galesburg, Illinois and Sacramento, Ca. People flying at 30,000 feet above me just don't get it. Thanks for a great video! I'll be posting some myself. Again, thank you.

@sideslide23 Yes, and we love to travel by train. But sleeping accommodations on Amtrak trains are REALLY cramped! Not like the '50s streamliner equipment.

@Larsky1010 is it even worse than the cheap cab on the Cruise ship? I've been on the cruise ship and the rooms are pretty small and whats worse, we didn't have a window.

@sideslide23 Well, at least on most cruise ships you have options for greater space, windows, balcony, etc. The only Amtrak bedroom roomy enough for this 6'5" dude is for handicapped people, and I don't quite fit that description. The Budd-built '50s equipment VIARail uses on its Toronto-Vancouver runs are much more comfortable.

@Larsky1010 I disagree. Via rail is real cool but honestly they are no different than Amtrak. I'm going to assume you're canadian being that I notice a lot of canadians like to be sheer bias toward Via. But Amtrak is very comfortable and is no different than Via. The rooms on Via are a lot similar to Amtrak's. Room space is pretty much the same.

@GordonFreemanD40 i know u didn't ask me....but I still have very fond memories of our trip this way. Even though we had a crazy experience.....a mudslide ahead held us back several hours....kinda sucky....we still had fun getting to know our fellow passengers and the views were AMAZING!!! I just felt like a baby being rocked to sleep. It is sooo peaceful and tranquil. I always sound like a commercial for Amtrak but it's true. This is theeee best way to go.

Amtrak no longer shows movies. Only the Coast Starlight in the Parlour Car and maybe the Cascades Train

@tyronewright64 They probably show movies in the lounge cars of all long distance trains. I've seen movies on the South West Chief and the Coast Starlight. I don't see why it would be limited to only those.
