@Volcomrider2207 Well hes into metal and prob likes the flexability that a keyboard gives him.. If youd take a look at a Dream Theater gig, youll see that he needs alot of different sounds throughout a concert which no piano can provide.. However there are also a few videos on youtube in which you can see him playing the piano. Very good musician!

He can definitely play, since the standard for pianists is pretty high, but it's not the same as an intensive collegiate level conservatory program. And yes, I do know what I'm talking about, I also attended Juilliard pre-college.

It requires as much luck as playing ability, and it's even more difficult to make it if you're an American who didn't go to Juilliard or Curtis (yes, Rudess went to the pre-college program at Juilliard, which is pretty demanding, but that's not the same thing). Also, although there's no doubt that Rudess can play, he isn't up there with the great pianists of today, I'm afraid.

fx33399, as musicians, we surely realize that being a true musician doesn't only revolve around "speed", as how fast you can play certain scales or patterns.. there's much more than just raw speed, for example: interpretation, touch, creativity, etc.. comparing raw speed is a fancy way to show off, of course (i admit, i use speed to impress people too), but winning the speed competition isn't a guarantee that you're better! it's good that you're fast, but don't forget the other things as well..
