  • Paul is dead

  • The fact i can't find a studio version of How Could I? on youtube either means your music is super rare and special or that you're utterly shite. Really not a fan of you as i was in '93. Maybe stop pandering to the needs of Paul wanting to sing EVERWHERE on the tracks. and ffs bring back the music that made you awesome. I can't work out whether you're referencing Focus or trying to supercede it

  • do you have the full show?? I can trade with other cynic stuff I recorded recently

    let me know

    Wally

  • Went to Cynic's 2010 US tour 1st concert in LA last night. Amazing. You really appreciate how good these guys are when you see them perform live.

  • @Tutunum what songs did they play?

  • @NECROPHOBICMASSACRE the whole Focus, most of Traced in Air, Integral from the "Re-Traced" ep, and even "Cosmos" from Portal. It was quite a night. Epic!

  • fuck yeah!

  • Wow, nobody other than Jason can do the outro solo correctly it seems.

  • If Cynic was a women i would bone her hard then buy her breakfast.

  • why dont you all fuck off! this guy doesnt like it, so what, your right, that is his opinion. Cynic are amazing but im not gona give sum guy shit over a difference of opinion. plus, if you understood what i think there message is then you wouldnt ether.

  • I suppose if you have a really shitty ear this song would be boring. for the rest it's bliss.

  • @thrashhh321 if you don't like it, don't listen to it, and stop posting shitty posts

  • What? Boring is your opinion...

  • your opinion doesnt matter, go listen to some slipknot. if you dont like it, fuck off we dont care about you

  • why the fuck would i listen to slipknot you retarded dickhead, its obvious i listen to thrash you cunt. i did fuck off from this shit song, the reason i have to come back to it, is because fuckwits like you think your all good for listening to a fucking shit posery gay ass wankers band

  • posery? Paul Masvidal started technical death metal you piece of shit, why go on a video of something you dont like and bitch about it? in my opinion i think metallica is boring but you dont see me going to a metallica video and bitching.

  • actually your wrong. paul did not start technical death metal. that my friend came from chuck schuldiner of death...whom on the human album featured both paul and sean influencing them to create the music you hear off of focus.

  • @thrashhh321

    dude. calm down.

we all listen to different music. if this is something you don't appreciate, then don't talk shit about it. because it doesn't matter what music you like. if you talk shit about other bands, there will always be others to oppose you. such as myself. i honestly dont give a fuck what you think about Cynic. i fucking love this band and as far as I'm concerned anything you say is disdainable

so please. steer away from anything related to Cynic and have a good day

  • @thrashhh321 Do you even know what poseur means?

  • @thrashhh321 Stop being so closed minded. I'm really into thrash as well, but there's still lots of other good genres of music. I listen to allot of stuff as long as it doesn't suck. Granted pretty much all new metal is complete shit, but give a better listen to these guys and expand your listening a bit. They're actually more talented than allot of thrash bands.

  • That's not Tymon! He's in the band since early 2008, this video is from 2007. Search for newer videos, like the one from wacken open air

  • You're correct. My mistake, I was reading a review about the new Cynic album and somebody said something about a horrible live video of Tymon doing the "How Could I" solo and I assumed that this was the one. Its still bad though.

  • This was in 2006, not 2007.

  • first solo ish shit.

But second solo i nice.. :p

  • It's not tymon idiot

  • I would happily growl for them!

  • Comment removed

  • David Senescu plays a complete different solo than the original, which was maybe the greatest solo ever written. Great live performance, though, as always.

  • why do they always use pre recorded vocals =(

    cynicc <3

  • They used pre recorded vocals because they couldn't get the original guy who did the growls, but, yeah, one of they guys in the band could have practiced their growls.

  • but yet its not that easy to sing and play an instrement why you play espeacally when your really tallented like cynic it takes a shit load of hrs and practice yrs!

  • This is a great band!

  • true!

  • have any of you listened to their other "offspring" bands. also terrific. check my vid for just one of many great portal songs

  • ok, ben :)

  • why is this guy playing this solo so different???

  • good question. I guess no one can play that solo like jason could. which is sad..

  • Tymon plays a pretty good version of it, but still... not like Jason. It's close though.

  • describing cynic as death metal is not doing them justice. Death metal is such a limited genre, cynic were in a league of their own and transcended petty labels. Even 15 years later no one has touched what they achieved on focus. The main reason they were perceived as "death metal" by some people was the fact that they recorded at morrisound and got a typical scott burns metal production. Strip away the chainsaw distortion and trigger kickdrums and they were closer to a fusion band.

  • So true.

  • Cynic got started as a death/thrash band (listen to their 1990 and 1991 demos and you will hear a completely different Cynic than in "Focus".), that's why many people "perceive" them as death metal. I think Continuo Renacer and Spiral Architect came really close to achieving what Cynic did.

  • ;isten to the 88 demos and 89 aswell

  • they are very much a fucion band, and an amazing bunch of musicians, but they did pretty much create technical death metal and have death metal elements, their jazz fusion influenced many other bands although no one has ever acheived their level of, well cynicness !

i totally agree with what your saying though

  • i can't agree, it sounds metal, but it's true that it doesn't sound death metal that much, and it sounds fusion.

  • @CyrusGuitar melodic death metal, similar to opeth in the amazing progression of the song through complex rifts and lyrics.

  • Who is doing the death metal vocals?

  • not 100% sure here but i believe its pre-recorded

  • Yeah the vox off the album they are using.

  • how do they sync it so well?

  • they play its the exact same time and tempo as the album must be a pain in the ass to!

  • Best Metal Prog Fusion Band EVER!

  • that would be the lead guitarist/singer. paul masvidal

  • plz explain to me who from this band played with death ?

not their names but their instruments , as i dont know the name of any 1 here :)

btw death or progressive or whatever ..cynic is great music and thats what matters to me

  • the vocalist/guitarist and the drummer on Death's "Human" album.Paul Masvidal and Sean Reinert.

  • Schwarztod ... dude you sucks!!

  • For fucks sake, surely they wouldn't have trouble finding a vocalist for the screaming?

    Still kick ass anyway.

  • if u like tecnicheal metal u shud try to find some psychotic waltz :))

  • Cynic is great !!!

i love their album what a shame they never made more than focus :((

i just bought it (again) 2 months ago :)))

  • Cynic is my favourite band since some time, i'm happy to see them live after all these years. I also love Death, but I must agree, that Cynic has taken musicianship to the next level ... unless when we talk about death metal & fusion

  • Damn. Cynic can't match their incredible performance live.

  • I love Cynic and this song but I must say it really makes me sad how the ending solo comes out. That is the best part of the song you know. Reinert is amazing as usual...my god!

  • I hear this song when Im sad XD

  • soilworkforever: I agree. The solo ought to be played note by note.

  • Focus was one of the best albuns ever! 5 stars to this one ;)

  • is it spiralben who uploaded this vid? nice one

  • demasiado perfecto

  • muy weno

  • Is this The band Cynic with James Murphy

  • no, this is cynic james murphy have played with other metal bands in the past like : Cancer,Obituary, disincarnate, testament and of course with Death playing for the spiritual healing sessions...and so on...hope to help you clear your mind...

  • Nocturnus was greater.

  • Thats fucking good, Death/Jazz Metal.

  • just plain progressive "metal", and who's singing anyways?

  • plain?????

  • I could just imagine if those riffs made it into a Death album..haha, too bad, Paul had to keep it for Cynic.

  • Death ain't got nothin' on Cynic. After "Human", Chuck Schuldiner desperately tried to cling on that technical/progressive finesse that only Paul Masvidal and Sean Reinert provided.

  • Oh c'mon, Death ain't that bad. It just seemed like he "clinged" on to being progressive, Chuck wanted it to be in that way since Spiritual Healing anyway.

  • ah!dude cum on wut u mean death aint got shit on cynic. look i like cynic they r gr8 musicians. the reason why they never got huge is because their style that they mixed with metal just dont go with the crowds of a true brutal thrash band.and the vocals r mesmerizing at times seems like their trying to hypnotize u with them vocals. but i like cynic i have 2say they r n a class of their own they different. chuck rules!

  • Who said anything about the band Death? I Was speaking of Death Metal in general. I agree, Chuck was the man, but he played Death Metal up until the end,.. hell, some would say he invented the genre. Cynic turned into a prog metal band and retained none of the elements which would have made them Death Metal aside from a few growls and double-bass parts here and there. That was my point all along. If you can't agree with that, you may as well consider Michael Bolton a Death Metal artist.

  • yea yer absolutely right on this, but my comment wus intended 4 sum1 else who said death,(the band) didnt have anything on cynic

  • Cynic would have gone nowhere had Masvidal and Reinert not performed on Human. They were nothing more than another band in the Florida scene until that was released. After that, they all of a sudden became "legendary." I'm not going to say they aren't talented. They are exremely so, but you have to put things in perspective. They are not in the same league with Death which is a true legend.

  • yea yea true, you can be extremely talented musicians but if you dont have the right ingredients to make yer music stand above the crowd you aint goin nowhere,my problem with cynic wuz just their roller coaster type music, the heavy parts were gr8 but then they had that side to them that would loose me,didnt really care 4 the voice box vocals

  • its true that because they was known from the human album , alot of ppl had to hear em when they turned into cynic.!!

but if the havent been makin some amazing songs they would have been forgotten again !! their unique songs made them legendary!!

i remember dave lombardo from slayer made a metal band after slayer,,,,,i forgot what the band was called and its all gone now.. cynic owned their fame themself !!!

    just what i mean !

    take care and be nice

  • I wish I could see them, but all gigs are too far away :-(

This Band is the best band in the world !!!!

Never heard again such a great music !!!

  • I saw them in the marquee London back in the day ... I m glad they are back, this band made a difference in the world.

  • cynic rules and thats all///

  • dabilogam!!!!! think more men...

  • The solo is different from the studio version.

  • They still 0\/\//\/ all!

They said on the cynic reunion website that the grows were gonna be from a computer.

    Anyway it's no FUCKING GLAM!!11!

  • that's metal ? that's glam.

  • If you think Cynic is glam, you don't know metal.

  • If you consider Cynic glam, you obviously dont know what metal is. These guys are one of the main reasons death metal is no longer crap like cannibal corpse.

  • IGNORANT

  • What exactly is old school to you ?

  • Look at the timeline of Cynic ffs, their demos ARE old school. Focus came out in the time of the 90s death metal movement in the tampa scene w/ Death, Obituary, etc.

  • Man, I AM from Florida and I grew up in that scene (my first DM show was with Executioner (pre-Obituary), Morbid Angel and Nocturnus as a matter of fact). You aren't telling me anything I don't already know. That they (Cynic) put out demos at the same time as many other seminal DM acts (which sound nothing like Focus mind you) doesn't elude from the fact that what they did later was by no means Death Metal.

  • Focus is progressive metal with scattered hints of Death Metal vocals & drums here and there. Atheist may have started as a "Death Metal" band as well, but can you seriously tell me that Elements is a Death Metal album? I think not. If you take a band of any particular genre and remove all of the elements which associated them with said genre, then effectively they no longer belong to that genre. Seems fairly logical to me.

  • Cynic may be "old school" for some of you, but for those of us whom were around when these bands got their starts, they are absolutely NOT. At least not what they later became. Now for the Cannibal bashing, I will be the first to jump on that bandwagon. Moreso because they are just a terrible band in general but what they play is undeniably Death Metal. The best thing those Cynic guys did was to help out evil Chuck on Human. Ignorant? Think again. Punkt slut.

  • I agree completely with you here.

  • Oh of course, Focus and their further efforts (Portal, etc) were no where near death metal as we know it but were much more progressive. Saying Cynic is the reason why death metal is crap these days is a little absurd. You honestly can't say Cynic was the reason why shitty scenekid bands like JFAC and WTC are made today.

  • You totally got him there. Cynic did absolutely nothing detrimental to the music industry.

  • Schwarztod, no one really gives a shit. I don't know if you've noticed or not, but this band is for the talented musicians who enjoy people who take their musicianship to the next level. Same as Death as well, and since you are from Florida, I find it embarrassing for you that you don't know that.

Besides, Cynic SAID THEMSELVES they didn't want to be death metal, but they just have the cookie-monster vocals from their old demos when Masvidal came close to losing his voice.

  • You must have missed my earlier reply to the person who wrote that Cynic is the reason why dm isn't crap anymore.... I never implied that Cynic were death. I merely stated the fact that they are not.

Death Metal was and is not about "taking musicianship to the next level." It is, however about anger, agression, brutality, etc... If you want to do that, by all means do so, but don't try to blend it with Death. It just sounds rediculous and forced. Out of element.

  • Since when were CD's like Symbolic ever about Brutality and Agression? Its Death Metal, but not neccessarily talking about manslaughter and hate. You sound as narrow minded as a cannibal corpse fan.

So a Death Metal fan can't enjoy musicianship? Thats impossible? Well then fuck Death Metal, I happen to enjoy my instruments. And I love bands like Cynic and Death for that.

  • You have totally missed the point.

  • "Death Metal is about Brutality, Anger, Aggression, etc..."

Where did I miss the point, again?

  • The point is that if you remove every element from something (brutality, anger & aggression) which characterizes it as belonging to a certain genre, sub-genre, species, genus or whatever (Death Metal in this case) it ceases to be a part of said group (Cynic vs. Death Metal).

  • I could easily start a jazz band and call it Death Metal but you would probably find that laughable, as would I. Cynic is simply not Death Metal. Death retained many of those elements which Cynic shed. I said nothing of their lyrical content by the way.

  • Beside Scream Bloody Gore and Leprosy (Maybe some of Spiritual Healing) how did Death have those 'elements' of anger, brutality and aggression. Lyrics actually have little to do with a genre, guitar styling and vocals make a genre what it is.

  • I would argue that it is percussion which plays the largest part (at least an equally sizeable part as the vocals and guitars) in what would define a band as belonging to the Death Metal sub-genre ie double bass, blasts, etc... You wouldn't say that Human was an aggressive album? I beg to differ. Symbolic and Individual started ebbing away from that but they still maintained an assload more of those elements than did Focus.

  • Appeared to have misread the end, sorry. Anyways how does Schuldiner sound different (overall) or anyone for that matter then the brutal vocalist of Cynic. So you cannot incooperate Death Metal with other styles of music, thats just impossible?

  • no it just sucks ;)

  • Alot of these bands which plagued the scene for so long were not interested in the music at all and their music reflected that. They were mostly interested in showing off. So you'd get all these bands which were just trying to out-perform every other band in their so-called "musicianship." Each member was off on his own ego trip so they ended up never impressing anyone but themselves. That attitude is what killed the Florida Death Metal scene. Believe me, I witnessed it.

  • shut the fuck up bitch u dont no shit bout 80s thrash igrew up in that era listening to this as a teenager yer just fuckn way off stupid ass

  • and I didn't!?! ha ha ha ha ha ha Listen jackass, the first show I ever went to was in '82. The original Misfits (yes I know they were not a thrash band). The first metal t-shirt I owned was an Anthrax Fist Full of Metal shirt. The first thrash LP I owned was Exodus' Bonded by Blood. I know full well what I'm speaking of.

  • yea yea bonded by blood i had to, with the 2 babies conjoined i no my thrash son. possessed 7 churches, kreator pestilence. destruction, i could go on 4ever i could care less wut shows or shirt u bought. and then their were none, does that ring a bell tough guy

  • you completely missed the point, much like alot of the the others who replied to my comments. My point was, I have been in the scene for a long goddamn time.

  • and furthermore, my comment was in retort to your "you don't no (how to spell) shit bout 80's thrash" comment, not an attempt to out-old-school you. So you're ancient. That, I could care less about but you aren't the only swinging dick around here who grew up with 80's thrash. By the way, I was 8 when I saw that Misfits show.

  • wuznt trying to attck u just didnt agree with yer comment on how back then thrash bands didnt care bout talent and how they were just trying to out do other bands, listen to the thrash of today youll hear where they got their inspiration... chuck schuldiner from death wuz very talented and ahead of his time das a bad mutha fucka

  • I didn't say thrash bands. I was talking about a bunch of trendy-assed pretentious primadonna bands that plagued the Tampa Bay death metal scene in the early to mid-90's. I love thrash, death, grind etc... & that's what I meant by "long live old-school."

  • Earlier in this thread someone described this show as "cozy, warm, quality, it was Cynic" Now, do those descriptors describe Death Metal? If so, then I've been wrong all along & I concede. Somehow I doubt it though.

  • Apropos, by stating that bands like Cynic (note that I did not isolate them) are the reason death metal is crap thesedays is no more absurd than saying they are the reason death metal is not crap thesedays. Is it not?

  • the growls are from the computer. They admit it in an interview you can find on blabbermouth.

  • AMAZING !!!!

    Cynic sounding AGAIN!!!!

I think today Cynic is just feeling the warm feedback from many people; this wasn't the same back in 93-94, their music was just too advanced for those years ago.

    Thanks God!

    CYNIC IS BACK!

    I pray for another album!

    Peace.

    Tortoise.CHILE.

  • Are the growls just a played off a backing track? That's dissapointing.

  • Great!

  • Who did the growls?

  • GOD!! THEY ARE GOD!!

  • It was cozy, it was warm, it was quality, it was Cynic.

    :)

  • paul's still into it :} happiness

  • sean reinert, best drummer in the world..paul masvidal one of the best, and definitely most unique

  • I love this band and they sound amazing here with this live stuff, but it's a little disappointing that they claimed for years that they didn't want to play like this anymore, and now they come back with only half the band.

  • used to live in south florida and see these guys all the time - awesome!!!

  • FUCKING CLASSIC

  • awesome!!! So nice to see Cynic back again!!

  • Kurwa zajebioza:)
