it was done to interpol too. the quiet gap in the middle of heinrich maneuver, which in many ways makes the whole track, had been shortend, by like two secs! what was the point of that i ask you?! stop it! there's no need! :)

why do the yanks at marketing feel they have to cut everything short by chopping off the end or whipping fives secs out of the middle? deserter actually runs on for at least 10 - 15 more seconds towards the end, on the album version and the 7" and in many ways it's the best bit of tune thats missing (when jamie pulls a chord so hard it makes your eyes water). i can only assume this is done to fit the MTV format. well it sucks and record companies should stop doing it.
