(the Yukimura and Date thing is understanding as historical fiction)

killing Tokugawa makes no sense though for another reason: he is the main character in Sengoku Basara 3

My point exactly, if for nothing else the story line is what is important. Since they killed of tokugawa, and tadakatsu, they pretty much screwed themselves for season 3. Moreover, there is also the fact that mitsuhide is in it too, and since they killed him in the anime aswell, he can not come back either.
