It's actually a Western Africa dish introduced to the Caribbean through slavery....most of the Caribbean cuisine came from Black slaves by the way.

You should try tostones. Fry thick slices then squish it and fry again.

A lot of the recipes require green ones but the last time I picked some up they were already ripe and they had no green ones so I had no choice.

I also saw a recipe where you boil them, squish and then bake them if you don't want to fry.
