Whoah! This track and this version of this super tune is absolutely great. I really like the bass line and that killer ryhtm guitar. It´s the first time i been listening to this band but not the last time. I suppose the music is from the late 60s or early 70s? My hobby is to rediscover all those great bands that did´nt broak through during this period. Listen for example to THE ZETTLERS and their version of "Skinnie Minnie" and Beautiful Delilah". Really f...g good with a bloody driving beat!
I'm a bit off there; Big Beat is the label that the Rationals box is reportedly going to be on. It's part of Ace Records, but the Ace site has no info that I can find.
Ace Records (U.K) is supposed to be putting out a Rationals box set--check their website.
I loved hearing "Respect" on Detroit radio way back when, and "I Need You," too (not the Kinks song but the Gerry Goffin/Carole King-penned ballad that was a minor soul hit for Chuck Jackson in 1965).
By the way, I was always a big fan of this band. I still have my single (on Cameo Parkway I think) Of the second version they recorded of "Leavin Here" which rocks way more than the earlier version and has a great flip side called "Not Like It Is", and another single called "Hold On Bay" which has Bob Seger on background vocals and Vox organ.
I have never heard or even knew that the Rationals recorded the Kinks song. Was it on an album or just released as a single? Do you have it? Can you post it if you do? Thanks.
Yeah, it was just released as a single. If you want to hear it, there's a video on her of it by dipsetmuthafucka. Just search for it and you'll find it.
No they didn't record the Kinks song "I Need You". The Kinks song by that name was an up tempo rocker in the same vein as You Really Got Me and was the B side of Set Me Free. The Rationals song I Need You was a slow ballad that had nothing to do with the Kinks song.
In fact the Rationals recorded TWO DIFFERENT songs called "I Need You": one was the original ballad you mentioned, and the other was that Kinks cover. Interesting, huh?
I was born in Detroit 1963. Family moved away after 1967. I moved back in 1996. What is it about metro Detroit music. How did so much music come out of this place. What made this place so unique. MC5, Bob Seger System, Iggy Pop etc etc etc oh yeah Motown sound. Somebody enlighten me! My older brother gave his entire vinyl collection of over 100 albums. oh yeah Kick out the jams ... ya know the rest.
Ex/ transplanted Detroiter and what was this Grandy Ballroom all about.
No band from the metro Detroit area made it big during their time as a band. Seems we like to self destruct in these parts often but hey, kick out the jams regardless, eh? The Rationals were a nice band for sure but it would not be until the mid 70s and the creation of Sonic's Rendevzous Band that Scott would really hit his stride as a song writer and singer. Had SRB recorded in the studio more, they would of made it big. Electrophonic Tonic is such a good cut that it is unfair to all else....
Scotts making it now with the band The Solution. Check them out. They have redone several of the songs The Rationals did. He also has a second band called Powertrane and Mitch Rider is often a featured guest.
The first song is an inferior remake of a song by Robert Parker called Barefootin'
Check out the original and you'll see what I mean

The Rats aka Rationals beat 99% of the blue-eyed soul contenders of the late 60s thanks to the sheer genius and vocal abilities of Mr. Scott Morgan.
Scott is still delivering the goods in 2008.
Peace,
tom

Yeah, this is the same group that recorded the Kinks song "I Need You," which is included in the Nuggets box. This album came out a few years later.
