Well I believe that 10% is more accurate because that is the highest official reported statistic/demographic on Afro Ecuadorians! There has also been an influx of Blacks from Colombia as well! There are two kinds of blacks in Ecuador BTW! Also 3% is a VERY big undercount!

I really love your videos, because I'm from a mixed American family & grew up in a place where there weren't many other families who looked like ours. Later I noticed that when I was in L.A. people assumed that I was a Black Mexican, when I was in New York people assumed I was Dominican, when I was in D.C. people assumed that I was El Salvadorian. He was acquitted by the court and later went on tv and bragged.. Many latin Americans mestizos cannot even go to Spain because the Spaniards hate them. This is why latinos come to the States. Remember in Latin America there is a REVERSE one drop rule where a drop of white blood can technically whiten someone! And as is the case with latin america, a black can be accepted as white at least culturally and if they are educated to some extent!

The reverse one drop rule and self identification probably makes the population seem smaller than it is because if you are a "mulatto" in the US your BLACK. point blank that is what you will be viewed as.

By USA standards even there is still variation within the "Afro" Ecuadorian population. Ecuador's population has been found to consist of well over more than 2 million Afrodescendants.A mulatto in the USA is NOT black. Many mixed people are not accepted as black in the USA. One drop rule does NOT exist anymore legally!

There are traditionally two distinct Afro-Ecuadorian communities, one on the coast (Esmeraldas province), and the other one in the highlands (Valle del Chota), with their own distinct musical traditions: Afro-Esmeraldeño music is played on the marimba and is very clearly of African origin, whereas the music and dance of the Chota valley, the "bomba del Chota" (or just "bomba") is African in origin, but also has Indigenous and Spanish influences as well...

@applesandspeed Not really! mestizo really means mixed and was a term that refered to any admixture however the first thing that comes to mind w/ the word mestizo is a mix of indigenous and white but the word mestizo has also become cultural and many ppl that are mulatto have even called themselves mestizo! And true many Indians that are very Hispanicized have called themselves mestizos!

And many times in Latin America and to some extent the caribbean, when one thinks of mixture they think of Spanish and Native American, but African is often the element that is overlooked or neglected! Mestizo simply means a mix! Many times mestizos might actually be zambos! Also there are ppl that are probably mostly just indian and white but may identify as black or indigenous! Again admixture does not determine how ones identify necessarily!

@chsn09 yea the ones i saw werent afro ecuadorian they were mixed just with strong african presence my monthers ecuadorian friends are from esmeralda those r the ones ive talked about and that kid i though an AA in high school which i know he was ecuadorian but not where from in ecuador

@applesandspeed wrong. Mestizo just means mixed. It has never meant a percentage or even a specific mix. Some of the castes appropriated the term, but even then the term was used in different ways for different reasons. The earliest use of the term mestizo found refered to a half jew half egyptian.
