This is the perfect reason why we need to drill in Alaska on land. The EPA federals should be defunded and let the states handle their own messes. How much easier would this be to clean up on dry land? I blame this is on the stupid greenies in the government. Another failed plan, thanks Obama. See, liberalism is a mental disease.
You don't understand that if we ban offshore drilling, that is going to put us further in an economic crisis! The State of Louisiana has been able to avoid being caught up in the economic crisis because of our Oil and Seafood industries, BP took the Seafood, and now Obama is taking oil. this SIX MONTH ban is going to severely hurt us, if we just banned it all together it's going to destroy us! If there is an all together ban of oil.
Use Hemp instead. It grows fast, renewable and helps the world breathe. I don't know if were living in a fairy tale but Hemp is in our face, don't know why we are not using it? It would take a miracle for Hemp to become legal on a Federal scale. I am sure there are rich people out there that can stop it from passing.
BAN oil drilling in the Gulf of Mexico. This is for all of us, the nature, the world. It doesn't worth the price. More safety measures cannot guarantee that the same will not happen again because it will. It is a matter of time. The risk is too high. The most sensible thing to do is to BAN permanently the oil drilling in sensitive areas like this.

NPR found that the amount of oil is a factor of 10 what BP says it is. If the oil hit the gulf steam it will cover the north east shore of the US. This may very well be the end of the ocean as we know it. With out a clean ocean life can not be supported on this planet. How could God allow this to happen?
I have, for years, feared what might happen if just one of the many of these offshore rigs had a leak or sank. Even so, I simply hoped that those in charge of the drilling would tell us if the risks were too high when taking into consideration the rewards. Man do I feel foolish.

@jrtman you said previously: "Ban Oceanaorg from making fear-mongering videos."
My reply: The right to "Free speech" just allowed you to make that statement. To ban Oceanaorg from making such videos would be a double standard in your favor.
Well if the US built new Nuclear energy plants in the thousands, we would need no off-shore oil drilling. There is only one way to stop oil drilling, you have to fund nuclear energy. If you don't, then you have no right to complain.
It would have cost BP about $500,000 per rig to install the most common remote shut off device. Why were they given permission by the federal government to throw the dice and gamble with such a volatile and potentially dangerous situation and skimp on the design costs? Some are saying greed was the culprit! If that is the case, then may god have mercy on us all.
First of all, it wouldn't have been up to BP, but up to the company that owned the rig and equipment...Transocean.
Second, remote devices are only required in a couple of countries, and have not been tested in real life situations. Their efficacy was questioned by an independent study commissioned by the US regulatory agency, the MMS.
My reply: First of all, just in case folks want to research and find the facts for themselves, what is being discussed here is something called an acoustic switch or acoustic trigger. Google it and find out the facts for yourself. Some major oil companies, including Royal Dutch Shell PLC and France's Total SA, sometimes use the device even where regulators don't call for it.
Yes, people should do some research. Of course many companies use the device, but it is still unproven (and of course would not have helped in this case). And as to MMS- what part of "independent study" was not clear?
And as a matter of fact, rigs do already have backup systems for closing down wells. Of course it wouldn't hurt to have another, but these comments are just bloviating over a false issue.
Secondly: Many are now calling for an investigation of Ken Salazar and the MMS. MMS = the Interior Department's Minerals Management Service, says it decided the remote device wasn't needed because rigs had other back-up plans to cut off a well.
lastly: In 2006, Salazar voted to end protections that limit offshore oil drilling in Florida's Gulf Coast. In 2005, Salazar voted against an amendment to repeal tax breaks for ExxonMobil and other major petroleum companies. Hmmm.... maybe Salazar and the MMS meant well and had their hearts in the right place, or maybe not.
Third, a remote device would not have helped in this situation. The blowout preventer (BOP) sent the message back to the rig that it was activated when it actually wasn't. An ROV could not even shut the BOP down by physically turning the switch at the seabed. If the switch didn't work in either of these scenarios, it's not going to work via remote.
It's okay to be angry and upset. Just base your reasons on good information.
@zuzukachoo Thanks for participating in an intelligent and civil discussion about this. The people of the world are watching this disaster. They will in the end make up their own minds and I think you and I both know which way their opinions will lean. You just kind hide, mask or explain away a disaster of this magnitude. Somethings just can't be undone, excused or ignored. This is one of those things. This, unfortunately, is a BIG deal.
Yes, suggesting that you base your comments on accurate information is EXACTLY like "hiding, masking, explaining, excusing, or ignoring" the disaster.
And I notice you still have not backed up your claim that drilling companies don't implement "at the very least the most common safety precautions" available eveywhere else but here. With facts, please, not more bloviating.
@zuzukachoo Sure. The oil well exploded and sank, 11 people died, oil is spewing into the Gulf Coast, BP hasn't been able to stop it, it is an economic disaster and an ecological disaster much of which is irreversible. Now many experts fear that hurricane season is approaching and it is really going to get worse. Thank you for keeping us all straight on the FACTS! We greatly appreciate the work that you are doing.
And yet you made some preposterous claims about the reason for the disaster, none of which you care to (or can) back up with, you know, FACTS. Instead, more bloviating.
We should all hang our heads in shame for allowing this to happen. Offshore oil drilling or not, you dont put an entire eco system in harms way without implementing at very least the most common safety precautions available and being implemented everywhere else but off the cost of the United States.
Seriously, you don't think drilling companies don't implement "the most common safety precautions available" in US waters???? Proof please. Actual proof, not opinion.
To those who think this is a liberal agenda I suggest you simply give it a rest. That is a tired argument with about as much muscle as my pinky. This disaster occurred because of greed. Anyone not sympathetic to this disaster is suspect in my book.
If we stopped the GE monopoly in wind turbines and stopped the nuclear poweer drain on our energy supply we could pump more oil from the established oil wells if we repealed the oil conservation law. This would make energy conservation more attractive and make us energy independent.
How about developing new energy technologies that don't destroy the planet and its inhabitants? And how are liberals destroying the USA. You think the oil spill or the massive economic collapse we had was the result of liberal policies? If so, you are really uneducated and I feel sorry for you
If you want to pay more for gas because your scared of drilling and spilling oil then go ahead. You want everyone to ditch oil and use big ass fans for electricity and run electric cars. Oil is a NATURAL resource for us to use. if you want to go back to the stone age and live with the bare minimum then you do that but stop telling me i need to pay more for gas because you cry when you see dead birds.

@VTubeAudio

@VTubeAudio

@VTubeAudio

So what would you like us to do? Kiss the Arabs asses?
You will never see the abuses that happen in foreign lands.
Liberals are destroying the USA

@WillyHeinExperience
How about developing new energy technologies that don't destroy the planet and its inhabitants? And how are liberals destroying the USA. You think the oil spill or the massive economic collapse we had was the result of liberal policies? If so, you are really uneducated and I feel sorry for you

This is so sad and the lost of marine life because of BP and they still want to do the offshore drilling. This must stop right now!
