  • I like Cato, they were the first to introduce me to libertarianism, though I find their devotion to Friedrich von Hayek to be lacking. I mean, Cato makes too many Beltway compromises...

  • Will all the videos of Cato University 2009 be uploaded at some point? I would love to re-view Robert Higgs' lectures.

  • wtf? one more "libertarian" that avoids talking about our foreign policy, i'm getting sick of this

  • I think that is the point, they really feel our duty is to ourselves, and not intervening in the broader world, you have to admit, that would cost us alot less...lol (by the way, I am Conservative...lol)

  • I'm more of a Mises libertarian than a Cato libertarian, but I think you are unfairly judging Boaz.

The Cato institute has hundreds of pages and dozens of conferences available on line dealing with foreign policy.

Why attack this one person and this one speech when its not about that topic?

Does every libertarian speech have to include every possible libertarian policy?

Why not say what Boaz said wrong in this talk, not what he left out?

  • You seem to be implying a libertarian would have issue with America's foreign policy, when in fact the issue would deserve an entire seminar to its self.

  • I'm sick of fellow libertarians talking about economic freedom without talking about foreign policy, they are one in the same. you can't have one with out the other. and you shouldn't name drop Bob Higgs without talking about about the MIC. that is Bob's focus of majority of his studies

  • >fellow libertarians talking about economic freedom without talking about foreign policy, they are one in the same.

No, not really. You can have a crappy fiscal/economic policy in a pacifist country (eg FRANCE). You're only correct in that you cannot have a military empire without economic tyranny.

Just because foreign policy is your pet issue doesn't mean it's central to everything.

Regardless, not everyone chooses to fight every battle in the same talk, either. This is 30 minutes long FFS

  • haha, nice assumtion even tho it is dead wrong. foreign policy is not my pet issue, if you take note of my name maybe it will give you a clue as to what I think is the central issue that must be addresed to reduce the size and scope of the gov't. it was a good try tho!

he is not fighting any battles in this speech don't make it so dramatic. cato, ever since they got their corporate sponser from exxon, doesn't address our intreventionist policy as much as they do taxes and/or spending

  • We have bigger problems than Al Queda. The poverty brought by this government will kill more than the terrorists ever have.

  • that was the point of what i said. the poverty brought by the gov't includes the fact we burn so much money trying to keep our empire

  • 'defense' is only 22% of the budget most years (far less this year).

Social welfare or fiscal policy dwarfs foreign policy's impact on our economy.

  • oh my god, please go read a Robert Higgs book before you try to feed me your crap anymore. you obviously missed the reason that a noninterventionist foreign policy is one of the cornerstones of the libertarian party

  • I doubt the libertarian party ever claimed that

    Foreign policy = Economic Freedom

Also, your insinuation that Cato doesn't cover foreign policy because of their Exxon sponsorship is really telling.

I think you're just being vitriol for the sake of starting a flame war, as you clearly have in this thread.

If you have a real beef with this speech, state it clearly and don't change the subject.

This is just David Boaz giving an interesting speech, not an academic lecture. For that, go to mises
