Darker sounds (like the students) lend well to up close playing. brighter sounds (like morelli's) lend well to projecting into the audience. Most players switch styles when playing with smaller chamber ensembles verses playing in large orchestra.

The orchestral excerpt which was being addressed in this lesson comes from the second movement ("The Story of the Kalender Prince") of Rimsky-Korsakov's "Scheherazade" (Op. 35). It is a standard excerpt for the bassoon; there is also a cadenza later in the movement, which was not played in this video.
as a teacher i would point first these points: non accurate intonation(let the tuner play the base: b and e and use your ear to tune ). playing free but keeping the relation between the value of the notes, more dynamic range. the way to do it would be found easily by the talented student.
i love Frank Morelli, he's such a nice man. Also, in response to oswaldiscute, Morelli is playing on a higher series Heckel whilst his student is playing on a different model. Thus different tones...
tone has VERY little to do with the bassoon. it is more about the reed and player. i'm sure you didn't know that the acidic level of your saliva alters sound greatly for example. higher end bassoons are usually bought for versatility. i have used a student and a $20,000 bassoon. the student sounded better because everything was in alignment but the professional wasnt as wide around so it had better ergonomics
You're forgetting the direction his bell is pointed is not the same as the students so he get's a duller reedier sound.
You're forgetting elements like the bocal. They are a huge factor. Reeds are even more vital and so on, but I disagree that the bassoon does little with tone. I sound COMPLETELY different on my fox 220 than on my fox 601. Same em brochure, bocal, and reed etc. If bassoons dont matter tonally, we would all play on $2,000 Amati bassoons and save ourselves thousands of dollars...
I guess it is a very debatable topic. I think my comment was a little blunt and off of it now that I think about it. I believe a better term would be that the bassoon doesn't have an effect on good tone. I sound better on my $5000 bassoon than the $20k one but they sound different. Heckel is just a name to be honest. I know a pro who sold his $40k heckel because he likes his yamaha better, and he's the only person I know who has a yamaha bassoon!
Oh god, I just got this excerpt assigned in masterclass and finding this video is awesome! Gorgeous tone, beautiful phrasing! I learned a lot already. :D
not at all! the embouchure will naturally be tighter in the higher register than in the lower, but it should never be "really tight." high notes should come from stronger air pressure and a lightly modified embouchure. if your mouth is too tight, you risk choking the sound. i had to learn this lesson the hard way =(
Wow. Just... wow. I always wondered what a bassoon sounds like- and because of this video, I now know. I never thought of the bassoon making such a warm sound. Wow again.
Nah, actually I like oboe a lot. It's just when people first learn how to play bassoon, it sounds like a duck. Now I don't know WHY people are giving me a thumbs down, because what I said is a compliment.
The only thing that isn't quite good is the breathing. It's not sounding quite normal. lol. Try to take a breath not so loud and don't open your mouth so much. Accept this as an advice.
I think they could both work on hand placement. So the left hands aren't tilted upwards. And that they only lift their fingers slightly above the holes. Not a biggie, but will help for rapid passages.
out of tune!!

@jetson59o The sound doesn't leave the bassoon from the bell. Well, with the exception of the low Bb.

Most likely because they don't (and I don't) consider the bassoon to sound like a duck. Since it has such nice tones and notes.
Kaiamara 2 years ago
Did I not say when someone is first learning? Have you heard a first timer? Honestly, it sounds awful to me.
Now here, the dude is really good, and so yes, it does have such nice tones and notes.

Oh yeah, believe me I have. I didn't sound spectacular when I was first learning.

With all due respect to Mr Morelli, I disagree with the subglottal positioning he recommends to hit an optimum F#.
just kidding, I have no idea :p
I love the look he gives at the very end.. like "see?"
