Not much energy is gained from regen. It has almost turned into a marketing gimmick. Yes you do get power from braking but it is such a short amount of time that it doesn't amount to much. Unless you stopped a lot like a bus, it isn't really worth it putting regen into a car. Your better off coasting when possible instead of slowing down, retain your energy in kinetic energy. Remember each time you convert the energy from one thing to another you loose part of it from the conversion (like heat)
So can you regen brake by coasting with the clutch engaged? I'd imagine you'd want a cap bank as they could sink the back generated current. Batteries probably have too much internal resistance to take all the current in.

RANGE? i would think bypassing the tran and going to the wheels you would get more bang to the buck
