Uh..... David Carnary said the show was older than him? He wasn't 40 here?.... Love this tribute by CBS for one of it's own shows -- imagine that? Soaps were just so good back then even though I didn't watch this one after 1982. Didn't quit get why some of the people who were not ever a part of this show were chosen to speak -- Bradaen, Cooper, Fulton, Canary.... After 40 broadcast years you would think there would be tons of people to speak who actually were a part of this show. Oh well.
Isn't it hard to believe that Beth would play Irna Phillips when the show celbrated it's 70th Anniversary. Someone said that Reese Witherspoon would have been perfect to guest star as Agnes Nixon, Irna's Protege.
Yeah, thats what I meant. It never, EVER, occurred to me that Grant might be a RECAST! Whenever I hear the name Phillip Spaulding I automatically think of Grant Alexander. Just like when I hear Alan-Michael I always think Rick Hearst!
@themirrorsofmymind Actually Bolger was the adult recast Philip, from 1985 to sometime in 1986. Grant came back to the role in the last half of 1986. Of course, the original Philip was Jarrod Ross who played the character from it's inception in 1977 to 1981.
Aw, Jeanne Cooper got her wish to appear on GL! What a classy lady, to fly to NJ on her own dime to be part of the final week of filming and bring Christian LeBlanc with her.
Thank you SO MUCH for uploading this! Wow...this is amazing! Beth Ehlers looks so cute back then! She has become so thin now. I miss the old Harley and I hate that the show pretty much ruined her character before she left town. I wish that soaps still garnered the same respect that they did just 20 years ago. =( I watched GL's final episode today and I am pleased enough. However, I can't help but feel so cheated as a fan. GL should have continued for many more years--some how, some way!
OMG! I totally forgot about this. Hard to believe with the way the cancellation has been handled by the CBS brass, that for GL's 40th...they gave them a primetime special...as I recall ABC did the same thing for Luke and Laura's anniversary one year....god how the times have changed....thank you thank you thank you "blosses"....you remind me and everyone else how good it was in those days, and how it should have stayed that way! :)
Ian Zering makes a comment that he would like to come back when the show turned 100 and be an old man being chased around by a jealous husband. Too bad it won't happen now.
it's hard to tell what will happen...it won't reach 100 on CBS...but there's other avenue's out there the show can take. one of the rumor's is the show going on-line somehow...streaming everyday. Soap Net, a channel that airs ABC soaps, is a network the fan's hope comes in and rescue's the show from ending completely. I wish a cable channel like Lifetime or another channel mostly geared toward women will pick the show up...i'm hoping the people behind the scenes are working on a plan.
Well, as an on-again/off-again viewer, I'll say that GL was part of my up-bringing since the early 1980's. It was the show on TV when I'd get home from school. It aired and still airs at 3pm here. I was never a hard-core watcher of the show but through the several decades stories and characters stuck in my memory. I remember vividly the Fisherman story from 1983 where Eli Sims went on that killing spree...my favorite characters were Alan, Roger, Ed, Ross, H.B. and others.
Yeah, but due to budget cuts, firing of actors etc, this isn't surprising. I only started watching when Matt & Vanessa first fell in love but I have to admit where it not for Otalia, I would have given up on the show a long time ago.

@TimsDale4ever Guiding Light actually started on radio in 1937. It didn't hit TV until 1952.

In the 'romantic' montage of clips, I noticed India and Philip, but it isn't Grant Alexander, it's John Bolger.
I wish I could have seen John back then. He looks GOOD!

Does anyone know the name of that tune that was playing from 3:57-5:34? It sounds so cool.

Thanks so much Blosses. Had this on tape. Don't know what happened to it. Been looking for this for a while.
I remember back then following Harley & A.C., Mindy & Nick, Eleni & Alan-Michael, Vanessa & Ross, even Julie & Hart.
Kinda sad that they're canceling the show now. :(
