Have you ever heard of the Mana Bar? It's a growing chain of gaming bars in Australia started by an Australian games journalist/writer that could be called modern-day arcades, from what I hear.
No, no no, this whole episode is just nostalgic bullshit. Sometimes you do make a good point about the legacy of gaming and maybe there is something to be learned from the past but this kind of bitching and moaning is nothing more than someone who can't let go of the past.
you are asking too much, you tell us to let go, but at the same time to not. Arcades are a like a cocoon where gaming developed, but you have to understand that not everyone enjoyed meeting people at the arcades, not everyone preferred to go outside their homes to do something as mindless as video games. Gaming was made for homes, it just didn't have the technology at the time.
I think another way that the arcade has been kept "alive" is MAME. Short for Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator. Yeah, if anyone is interested, check that out! :)
It might be worth noting that a gaming comunity exists, obviously, but it's not so face to face. It's on multiplayer servers, Wikis, and gaming sites like the Escapist. I don't think people need arcades to make friends and communitites, Bob, and I don't think preserving the past is really a particularly good way to move forward. Arcades are dying out right now because they couldn't adapt (though I know some in town that are tyring admirably). It's pretty much just survival of the fittest.
An arcade? I remember an arcade, 2 of them even. They were both in a mall I used to go to with my mom when I was a kid. The mall closed in 09 but the arcades closed way before then. She took me into the big one maybe twice but couldn't play anything. I told myself I would come back when old enough. It faded long before then. The smaller one came in about 00 and vanished shortly after. All I know now is Dave & Buster's.
Is Sharkade supposed to be Good Times? I miss that place... I even miss the gang of asian kids who would never let me play Tekken alone. I think games should return to bars and pizzerias. I have fond memories of ordering a pizza then rushing to the Soul Caliber game and trying to beat it before they say my order's done.
There is an arcade in my town that is very popular (open at 7am an close at 11pm). I go there every once in a while, to play Marvel vs Capcom 2 or Snowbros. Many other arcades in town are closed now, but I'm glad to see, like the one I mentioned, that there still is some love to the arcade machinnes.
We had an arcade in North Seattle recently, it was mixed in with a retro games store and was great, it got hundreds of people a week, but was closed because the building manager i guess decided he didnt want it and got rid of the machines :(

Bob, your smartphone-arcade idea is brilliant. Go tell Valve about it. They can probably bring it to life.

I can't help but thinking I will never see that unknown guy rocking hard at Killer Instinct. Damn he was good.

The only thing close to the social experience of an arcade nowadays would be game tournaments.

There is an arcade in my area that my friend and I go to all the time. I could not tell you how many times it has been closed and reopened.
