Denzel Washington play'd a corrupt Cop that was killing and stealing from people in Training Day. Most actors can't get away from that whole stigma. The only one I can really think of that never went through something like that was Will Smith.

I think in a lot of cases, like indicated in the film Crash, they aren't really given a large scale choice. Well Black Americans have all the things that I've listed...which Asian, Arab, native Americans don't even have close to any of those listed. We have no sports players, we are not seen as strong & beautiful people, we have no president of our color, we have no TV hosts.....we have none of those things that Blacks have in America. Hollywood is not racist, but they like stereotypes, and the actors choose to play or not to play that stereotype. @ConservababeUSA The tone of conversation to even suggest to individuals that they should "Go somewhere where the landscape is dark enough for your liking" displays a lack of empathy for individuals whom are different than you, and it negates the very ideology of a melting pot for which this society has been founded. It may not be necessary to scream racism, but it is poor attitudes regarding separate ethnic groups as actors first that plagues Hollywood, and stalemates media opportunities.

The issue works two ways. Hollywood acknowledges only what sells, and if they have been selling stereotypes, they will continue unless something comes along where it is proven different. They break the case for particular actors, but not complete ethnic groups which is the ultimate goal. The best way to prevent this from continuing is to support independent work that shows the character of individuals separate from the stereotype. The Cosby Show is a great example of beating Hollywood.

good discussion, but it is not just the issue of race. What I cannot stand with hollywood is the fact that there are professional actors who have gone through the whole process of college and theatre training waiting to be hired. Then they go hire some music celebrity cannot act - all because of the gamble of using that famous celebrity. Give those that have worked for it a chance.

This forces ethnic actors to fight them from the ground up, by writing/producing/directing; hopefully something good may come from the negativity, and that people are willing to support ACTORS who happen to be of ethnicity rather than the caricatures of ethnicity. By taking control of the digital age hopefully there will be some new receptive standards to cinema.

It's economically better for black actor's but it is just a contract, and it isn't a demonstration of an actor showing their capabilities. What happens is continuous type-casting which is not why most people even get into acting in the first place. People act to show versatility not be confined to a stereotype. I mean, an actor is an actor to them, and they either do a good job or not. @Hudsucker94 I think assuming that they "choose" to play those these roles indicates that they turn down other roles in order to play them. I think in a lot of cases, like indicated in the film Crash, they aren't really given a large scale choice. I highly doubt most black actors, male or female, turn down leading roles like what Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp are offered all the time in order to play prostitutes and pimps, druggies and drug dealers, et cetera.

Music channels have blacks on almost every video. Considering blacks are only 13% of the US population, why would Hollywood feel compelled to display a desproportionate amount of blacks in movies. yes I would. Just because it is "black entertainment television" doesn't mean there shouldn't be any other races shown in its programs. I really think that stations such as BET, LOGO, Lifetime, Spike, We: stations that claim to be specially made for one type of audience shouldn't exist It just sounds like some weirder form of "separate but equal" thing. Why not just have all programing be mixed up.
