This came out when I was a teenager and It's been my favourite right through the years .Still gives me gooseflesh when I hear Judiths voice .So pure and it just takes you to another dimension.
I was 5 years old in 1965 and I remember this from back then. There was a teenage girl in my street who looked just like Judith Durham, and as a 5 year old I was utterly convinced the girl on the telly singing this song lived in my street............I wonder where that is girl is now???!
Anyway, wherever Judith is now, thank you Jude, for such a lovely song and for such a lovely memory.
I have always wondered but the orchestral strings on this wonderful recording ,anybody know who they were ? session musicions or perhaps BBC light orchestra ?
@morpheusatloppers Hmmm...sounds like it could be the Norrie Parmour strings or perhaps the BBC Light Orchestra ... such a wondeful score and arrangement .
@morpheusatloppers Not to sound to cliched ...but would have loved to have been sitting in on this recording session ,even if it ment the orchestra was playing along to the vocal recording ...or vice versa although it possible that it was all recorded in one session ,together ...possible .
Very funny that this group is singin' the old Russian folk-song of XIX century (1883)... The words are different, but the tune is the same - completely. Plagiarism...
Thankful that this clip is saved BUT... Judith Durham could sing excellently LIVE and looked good in a long shapeless gown. The "Top of the Pops" stereotyping forces her to "get taller" (=stand on a box), "dress ordinary" and mime. Their song is golden but this show is just uncomfortable.
YouTube LOST @beadsstitcher's comment (THEIR fault) which said that the group were Australian and that Judith Durham was currently confined to a wheelchair. YouTube would be a great service if it WORKED properly!
@beadsstitcher - I thought EVERYONE knew they were Australian - but I did not know Judith is now wheelchair-bound. That IS bad news. I saw their reunion concert some years back and she was fine then...
Not 'arf! I once wrote a whole PIECE on how the '60s was WIPED.
As you say, VT was expensive - plus they thought recordings would fade (I have ones I made nearly 30 YEARS ago and they're fine) - AND there was the rights issue.
Most programmes were contracted for one airing, plus one repeat. Additional airings would have been a clearance nightmare.
But of course, they didn't realize they were living in a GOLDEN ERA!
They also thought there would be no interest in these black and white tapes once color television was introduced, and there were those pesky union restrictions. I think the other issue was little room in the archives. Archive space was filling up faster than it was being built. The BBC stored these tapes in a rented manor house which was overflowing with them, creating a fire hazard, and the fire inspector told them to move the tapes. The BBC decided to wipe them.
@morpheusatloppers How right you are, I had all my teenage years in the sixties, they were the best. Thanks so much for posting this. I used to tell my kids about the Seekers when they were little, this was played full blast in my house. Judith's voice was as clear as a bell. The quality of the music is unsurpassed. She and Mama Cass were my faves!
This will be played at my funeral (cheerful soul!). Thanks a million.
Basic music instruments and a magical voice..make this one haunting song!!..I still love to hear it after all the years gone bye!!!!

@luxyaltz219 I believe - session musicians at Abbey Road. Produced by Tom Springfield (of The Springfields) but conducted by...?

@luxyaltz219 Norrie Paramor's influence at Abbey Road was waning when this was cut - but the strings could well include many of his guys...

Wonderful song, and Judiths voice is out of this world. But it's a shame, that the video and the sound is out of sync...

@nuggigandalf - Agreed. As stated on my info panel - YOUTUBE screwed it up. It plays GREAT here - but you can't all come round to MY house...

@Numinator1 after 75 years the music belongs to nobody. ask mozart, bach beethoven and even your own tchaikovsky.

Nice,I have this on DVD.Wonder why they made Judith stand up on that box,They would not get her to it now.
The video tapes in the sixties were very expensive and they were wiped for reuse.
Makes me sick when I think of all the great recordings we have lost for ever.
