  • I wish you, Bill, would do an instructional video on how music goes from analog to digital, because i think there's too few of people who truly understand what it means to transfer something that doesn't obey bitrate "limitations" to a constant, or variable bitrate mode, and how hertz and kilohertz work.

    Thank you.

  • I've traced the problem of my screen going dark to my backlight, but I was surprised I could still see the colored image, albeit not very well, if I shined a light on the screen. I couldn't figure out what that was about, but now I know... This knowledge... It's too dangerous to be in my head. I must wipe my memory but send myself an envelope of little items to jog my memory on everything else I knew... And I'm also wiping lemonparty.

  • I know what some of those words mean...

  • I just found about these videos. My new addiction!

  • you should definitely have your own show on Discovery :)

  • its great to be watching this with the exact same monitor he uses to demonstrate :)

  • @@

  • So can the lcd monitor be damaged from pointing at it or touching it without any intention from deliberately damaging it?

  • Oh my god! This makes so much sense!

  • can i download your video and share it with our college ?

  • @sultanzsultanz It is released under a Creative Common license ... so the answer is yes.

  • I have NO idea what he said... but it was really cool!

  • At 1:40 I learned that from 3D glasses

  • i still don't get why you need the polarisers ???

  • Holy shit. That was amazing to watch.

    Thanks for making/posting.

  • Whoa I go to this school

  • LCD = Liquid Crystal Display

  • If I lay this shit on the optical sysyem-

  • Comment removed

  • can you do a video on OLED screens

  • Could you explain a dead pixel?

  • Thanks for making an excellent video ! You have a way of making something very complex much easier to understand. Even if one does not get the entire concept they will recieve a tremendous amount of knowledge to go forward with. Thanks again for taking the time to explain.

  • Very nicely done. Subscribed!

  • Bill, great video. I always wondered how the light was distributed within the LCD panels. When I saw the plate that the LED shine into I thought of a piece of fiber optic cable flattened out.to spread the light around. Very well done. I have watched many of your videos. Looking forward to the new series. I also post many amateur - ham radio videos. Randy K7AGE

  • Where are you Bill? Surely you haven't run out of things to talk about?

  • @StRoRo I have not run out of things to talk about! We are very busy preparing series #4. Eight videos with a companion volume. Videos on the ccd in a digital camera, how smartphone accelerometers work, etc. I am editing chapter on batteries right now at my desk.

  • 9000+ likes and only 20 dislikes. usually even the highest rated videos have at least 1% dislikes.

  • This video alone has helped me diagnose what my LCD's problem was XD Thank you @engineerguyvideo

  • we watched this video in one of my college classes

  • @necroskiss I taught at Carnegie Mellon for a decade before I moved to the University of Illinois!

  • @engineerguyvideo Did you meet Randy Pausch?

  • @PerryThePlatypoos Nope. Only heard of him likely when you did ... when his story and book came to national promise. (As I look back we only overlapped there by a year.)

  • Looks like my dreams of being an engineer are crushed

  • Engineerguy somehow you make me rethink life!

  • What did the diagram at 0:49 look like?...

  • wait, so could i just take off that piece of glass cut out two lenses put them in a pair of frames and i could watch porn without people noticing?

  • @MrClaytable or, you could just remove one of the polarizing films, and make glasses out of that ;) just search for it ^^

  • @Soggiii sweet

  • I feel like a nerd for watching this at 1:00, on a friday night.

  • I found it crazy how im learning about what im looking at

  • This is the only video by this guy I've seen and I've already subscribed.

  • Like if you came

  • They need to play this kind of music in class. Will help me focus.

  • That was awesome. It's kinda like magic!

  • Fascinating. Is this the "Twisted Neumatic" type of panel?

  • my mind is jello

  • Thumbs up who thought he was going to just smash the screen

  • Ok... On/Off switch... How does that work?

  • @1fatbastard Silly question really...of course it has something with the light source..the LEDs at the bottom..!

  • Who else kept leaning against their screen to see the pixels :p

  • Do a discussion and explanation on Super Amoleds please! Thank you! Your videos are really educational.

  • so awesome

  • Fantastic explanation and really helpful! Now if only I could build one I'd truly feel like a master!

  • this explains what happens when i rotate a lcd from a cellphone in front of my pc screen.

  • mmmmmmmm glass sandwitch..... tastes like blood!

  • i thought that there were just black and white pixels, and they flashed at different frequencies, creating the illusion of color. but i fail :P

  • Vsuace brought me here!

  • good video

  • i'm 12 and what is this

  • i like samwichs

  • achvement get: super geek

  • all i heard was sandich

  • yoh it gives you a bigger picture on how primative video cards are.

  • omg amazing

  • I want to know how a CRT works.

  • this is like 3D glasses

  • thank you engineerguy, in writing an essay about crystals, liquid crystals and LCD's. your video helped a lot. i finally understand how it works.

    greetings from the netherlands

  • Sir you are brilliant (at explaining things) .

  • i know how it works now!!!

  • I just jizzed in my pants.

  • When is there going to be new episode :'( ?

  • he desmounted my monitor... :(

  • mind blown!

  • All these talks about glass sandwiches are making me hungry :)

  • @MateenK only could be an american

  • This video just turned my brain to shit

  • @TimAyro

That means your brain was already shit

  • i wish there was a "love" button!!! i love technology and the only thing i love more than technology is when technology is explained to where i can understand it :) thank you engineerguy!!!

  • mindblown

  • OM NOM NOM (glass sandvich)

  • this was fantastic. i've wondered about that polarized screen for a while.

  • these videos blow my mind.... people are just so clever it's scary.

  • A sandwich of glass :D

  • 1:38 - rapatronic camera shutter...

  • @engineerguyvideo Good choice of operating system.

  • That kind of stuff was in my phone screen. It was awesome playing with it all! haha

  • im from..........vsauce

  • Mmmmm sandwich :)

  • ammmm.........

    what? XD

  • wait if the light comes from the bottom why does my computer screen load from top to bottom?

  • 1:40 Woow

  • amazing

  • WOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

    VERY GOOOD

    THANK U

  • WHAT?>.<

  • WOW!!!!!! THANK YOU, YOUR THE FIRST GUY TO BREAK IT DOWN WITH SUCH TALENT! FINALLY, A CLEAR BREAKDOWN OF HOW EACH PIXEL IS ACTIVATED!!! THANKS ENGINEER GUY!!!

  • I have an LED monitor, I am the 1%

  • THATS MY MONITER!

  • this was so interesting and made so easy to understand! Loved it!!

  • I will never take this computer monitor for granted again

  • god i love technology......

  • I learned this from a book but how does LED work? and my LCD monitor won't work anymore when i moved so i got the LED monitor. Is there a way I can fix that myself?

  • Finally, I actually learned something productive instead of something useless using the internet!!! awesome.

  • this is so awesone.

  • glass sandwich XD ouch!

  • i just nerded all over the floor

    :D

  • It would be a pretty nice scam to open someone's LCD, put some polarizer sheets on it, close it up. Then they turn on the device, and they can't see! What to do?

They come up to to you, ask you what happened, and you say you would fix the problem. Open it up, take the sheets out and voila! Hundred dollars. Or perhaps, a lawsuit.

  • i guess this happens because of optical activity of plane polarized light.. the organic chemical shows optical activity also known as Enantiomers.....the plane of light which shifts to the right is known as dexrtorotatory substance and left shift is leavvorotatory...:) its sweet that now edge light lcd's have changed to full backlight LEd's...this tech is wow! i wonder when will holographic TV's release..give is 5-10 years:) thanks engineerguy

  • Could you do a video like this on how RFID works?

  • fascinating..

  • more pixals, more pixals

  • im so happy i have the internet!! :)

  • i'm learning how LCD's work by watching it on a LCD monitor...

  • bah bah bah

  • i want a sandwich now :l

  • im watching a video about monitors...on my monitor

  • oh my god its the father of justing biever

  • wow mindblowing! :o

  • Did you put your nose on the screen too?

  • I find it odd i actually understand this,

  • Engineer is credit to team!

  • ummmmmmm what?

  • youtube should start a school

  • I watched this on an LCD screen.

  • i have the same moniter... Guess itll be dissasembled

  • Obligatory octopus comment.

  • But... DID YOU SEE THE GORILLA???

  • Awesome. I've always wanted to disassemble a screen and see what's inside it.

  • Brilliant? Yes, but can an octopus blend into that?

  • most of us are from BRAINCANDY 7 from VSAUCE XD

  • I knew our world was complex and amazing, but who would have thought that there's SO. MUCH. TECHNOLOGY. literally behind the one thing that most of us probably stare at the most all day.

I've played "Konstructor: Engineer of the People" a little, so I understood the TFT part, and the polarization is just intuitive. But I just couldn't wrap my head around the rest of the content even though I understood the sentences. A piece of technology so innocent looking can boggle your mind this much.

  • pfft...my octopus is my replacement monitor...

  • wow... more octopus videos?

  • I'm watching how an LED screen is made on an LED screen.... SCREENCEPTION!

  • i wonder what this guy thinks when once a month he gets a wave of people coming from vsauce.

  • Marty, we're going back to the future!

  • this is so awesome, thankyou!

  • DAMN SCIENTISTS,ZAPPIN MY T.V.!

  • Would love to see more of this guy but I subscribed to too many people already :o

  • He's using Ubuntu. Thumbs up if you noticed.

  • Oh no... I started a giant debate... >.<

I'm sorry, science and engineering astound me!

  • @ONITOmusic It's good debate! I like using the comment section to answer questions, or spark thought. I love to heard what viewers think .... maybe they agree with me, maybe the don't. Doesn't matter too much to me, just like to see what's on their minds ....

  • @engineerguyvideo Yeah, I love it when video producers get involved in the community!

It's just, I usually leave a comment and it goes unnoticed. I never thought a comment of mine would create a chain of comments THIS long! :P

Still, it's nice to learn something every once in a while. Great videos!

  • @engineerguyvideo I just this for a homework, thank you so much!

  • @engineerguyvideo I mean I USED this haha

  • Comment removed

  • i didnt notice the cc translator

  • Like i always say engineering is the most useful branch of science. Civil engineering student. ;p

  • Lol Im using an lcd Pc

  • lol oh lol

I just had this today in school, s°°° I did not see this before...

    just amazing, thank you <3

  • can anybody give me the answer to this......since the backlight is the only light source, there must not be anyway of saving energy by using a black google search engine like this one>> Blackle . com that claim to save energy??

  • how about my led screen?

  • and of course vsauce makes me sub to another channel

  • wow

  • can you fix my dead pixel?

  • OM NOM NOM NOM, YOU TASTE DELICIOUS!

  • Aerogel Bong

  • LCD tv on how it's made!

  • haha glass sandwhich is a primus song!

  • You, sir are awesome :-) I Subscribed!

  • WOW

    <3

  • He is using Ubuntu!!! linux ftw!!!!

  • There is a great deal of basic information that has been omitted!

  • That's totally my monitor!

  • oh gosh i feel so nerdy now...

  • Holy crap. That's crazy... who in the hell could come up with something like this!?

The beauty of science astounds me!

  • @ONITOmusic

it wasn't maked in one day.

it was long process started by crappy LCD screens in watches and calculators.

  • @ONITOmusic Its the beauty of engineering not science ;-)

  • @engineerguyvideo Well, I'm sure scientists had a whole lot to do with many of the concepts at use in the whole system. Either way, this is some crazy stuff! :D

  • @engineerguyvideo funny how whenever someone discovers something or makes something they think its science. engineering is the future XD
