  • Man' you got to pay close attention to what the hell your doing! This is awful to hear about anybody dying like that. That is so very sad and tragic.

  • You have no fucking idea how much that would hurt

  • how old was this worker maybe 16, don't let kids do a mans job !

  • do you think he died instantly from that??

  • i find it should have senseors that detect objects that are not wood and stop chipping

  • who in the hell would want an emergency stop button on that machine? if you are pulled through and someone activates the emergency stop, i think you would rather want that machine to finish the job before you have to live a life on someones else's air

  • When chipping brush at work, I always take the extra second to look back at my co-workers and make sure they are ok and not being pulled through the chipper. Or for newer employees, I stand nearby with my hand on the control bar. The problem with people these days is that everyone is in a big rush. All they see is dollar signs. They don't think about safety until someone or themselves are getting pulled through a chipper.

  • Well in all fairness this particular machine has no emergency stop bar. Its kind of old and most likely, the company didnt have too many safety features that they put on chippers back then. Nowadays chippers have all kinds of features built just for safety and they come standard. A stop bar for the feed rollers is usually on the end of the feed table and its about thigh high. Lean in too far and depress it and the rollers stop automatically.

  • they should have gassed the saw before climbing.. no way that they used an entire tank on those trees... it can be that simple.. 2 men at the chipper might have saved his life.. Hate those vermeer chippers with the vertical feed rollers.. that is just a bad design anyhow..

  • The label for the feed control that is shown in this video is labeled backwards. You can clearly see that "Feed" is on the right side of the label on the machine, but on the left side of the enlarged example.

  • what a horrible way to die...

  • Very useful. This is training I have not been given. Thank you !

  • It's more likely that while he was feeding the branch in the wood chipper a limb that was sticking out of the branch from behind him sort of pushed him in with the force of the wood chipper sucking the front of the branch. To me that makes more sense than him tripping into the machine.

  • terrible... R.I.P should make the feeding area higher up it would make the job more stressing but much safer...

  • When I used to operate a chipper years ago, we had a rule that nobody worked it alone or wandered too far when somebody was feeding the branches in. In cases when feeding large branches that could potentially get caught on, one person would stand by the safety bar. What also helped was the fact that our chipper was a side feeder and so the feeder chute being located above the wheels meant that it was at waist height instead of knee height and so would be less likely to be pulled in.

  • SUCH A WAY TO DIE, OMG........

  • They should have some kind of pressure pad that you stand on so if the pad goes below a certain weight the machine shuts off immediately.

  • i wouldnt wear gloves or long sleeves near one of these things

  • Out of all the ways to die, this man ends up in a woodchipper... O_O

  • I hope his family get on ok.

  • CANADIANS ARE AS DUMB AS FUCK.

  • I knew this man. Great guy, fun loving, hard working - we miss him dearly.

  • Wouldnt it be alot more safer to have a chipper with a pedal on the side that has to have a human standing on it or else the machine dies? I mean then when someone is pulled through and lifted off the pedal the machine would stop and they would have only minor injurys and a minor panic attack.

  • Had a shop teacher who got a little sloppy and got his tie caught in a planer. Lucky for him, 3 students (me included) had our pocket knives out and cut it off. The talk about a kill switch probably wouldn't work because it happens SO fast.

Since kids today can't carry a pocketknife I'm not sure what would happen.

  • that's as nasty as an accident can popssibly get.

  • Thats y i chip all my trees NAKED!!!

  • Ykes, these animations are very graphic... but very effective at teaching proper usage

  • an easy fix for this is an RF device that shut the machine off, and longer chute..DUH

  • ...an infrared detector-shutoff might be a practical second-layer safety device... Trees would have little signature...whereas a human body has a strong signature.

  • take your watch off!!!!!!!!!!!!! damn near got pulled in from my watch lord!!!!

  • what a horrible way to go....just think of it

person 1: how old is your dad, today is his birthday

    person 2: he dead

person 1: dead how old was he? WHAT HAPPEND?!

person 2: only 45, pulled into a wood chipper....

  • yea never put the branches in backwards always trunk first!! we had an old one with a spinning cutter that pulled 5 inch trees so fast im glad that thing is retired i seen so many close calls over pushing tid bits in there also. please be safe!!!!

  • As a fellow tree service worker this video made me rethink my

practices in honor of fallen brother I shall be more careful.

    Condolences to family,

  • adios chief...drop us a card from hell, tell us how hot it is

  • Basic drill press safety ...No thing on your body that can get caught.

  • R.I.P

  • made me want to puke. what an awful and painful death

  • i used to work for a city (not saying which) but our chipper had a pedal which you had to step on to activate the rollers you let off they stop

  • On my job,we are not allowed to operate chippers alone under any circumstances.one guy mans the safety bar at all times.

  • SAD!

  • Well unless he was made of wood he should be fine.

  • Fuck that glad I went to collage and have a desk job, now I will stop complaining about paper cuts, staple stabs and getting my finger stuck in the pencil sharpner. RIP Sir....

  • owwwwwwwww thats gatta hurt

  • fake much.

  • I am glad that there is no reanactment, like in the lost youth video...

  • he was as green as the trees he was chipping. Wouldn't this company be liable as they did not have proper safety equipment?

  • One of my favourite jobs is working a chipper... this is too awful to contemplate.

  • R.I.P my friend i wanna cry !!!!! :(

  • Omg

  • verry sad. :(

  • after watching this im going to stop going to work high

  • Sorta makes me rethink my day job...

  • sounds like insufficent training....

  • @joeylawn36111 Thank you Captain Hindsight! What would we do without you?

  • they should just make them with a dead man swicth

means if some one isnt holding a lever etc. the machine wont operate

    it'l be safe that way

  • @R063R13 The thing is, people tend to jump out those controls, or even tape them of find a way to jam the button "ON"

  • @R063R13 My thoughts entirely and I'm only 16 BUT! Just think of the hassel it will course. You wouldn't be able to go get more brush and it would take longer. It's a great idea but it would cost us and clients so much more. All you need to to know how to use them properly.

I work with the same kind of chipper the man was pulled into. I know what my feet should never go in the hopper EVER and I should stand to the side.

  • Wow that's so crazy! And he had just started working there...

  • poor bloke

  • horrible :(

  • I learned this in woodshop in High school: NEVER wear loose clothing, any chains, necklaces, remove. Wear a SHORT SLEEVE SHIRT ALWAYS! Tuck your hair in a hair net if you have long hair. If you do all of the above, There is nearly no way you'll get pulled in.

  • I knew the fellow killed in this mishap. We worked together in Mississauga Ont in the early 90s. He was a prince of a gentleman and a gem of a human being. It's so ironic that the best of God's creations leave us too soon. Now playing his beloved drums in heaven and putting smiles on all the faces there, just as he did here on earth. Please everyone, think safety always and never think that it can't happen to you. We will never forget you Lolly RIP, your spirit of lives on in Everton FC !

  • how in the hell did the man end up in there the first place?

  • D a m a g e !!!

All I can say is thank god for videos like this, people need to know what can happen to em if they dont be careful

  • fuck. what a way to go eh. R.I.P.

  • read the manual first.

  • No bump bar, don't look any further. Poor SOB, all that because the equipement wasn't up to standard.

  • poor bloke it was hes first week on the job 2 he was proli young...

  • never saw a machin like that one,and now better that i dont see it

  • if your gonna do something..... do it right.... or dont do it at all.

  • My cousin had both legs cut off in the woodchipper yesterday which is what brought me to this video. He lost a lot of blood and both legs from the knee down but survivded. He is 29 and is married with two kids whom he can no longer provide for. Please becareful, this stuff really happens.

  • Only days after starting the job! nice training job on the part of the dumbass employer!

  • at the moment the one tree guy called for the feeder guy to get gas....the entire operation should have stopped (according to the safety booklet in BC) until the team would have been complete again. Also Bylaws clearly ask for safety bars to be tested annually twice but nobody enforces the bylaw as it should be....I also happen to know from the local newspaper that the victim only had a couple of months experience ...with other words the victim should have been sent to get gas...

  • Yes the design on this machine is very poor. It needs to have a standing pedal which, if the operator steps off it, this immediately shuts off the machine.

  • Nasty.

  • owch!

  • Any time I use a woodchipper, I always have two people working; one feeding and the other manning the controls.

  • @Butterball3588 The engine controls are on the side... Even if the guy cut the engine it still takes a long time for the momentum to die down... That is why you have the feeder control bar right on top of the chute opening!!! If it is a chuck and duck style you just chuck it and duck it as they like to spit stuff back at yaa... Chippers don't just turn on when you put something in them they run and build up a lot of momentum!!!

  • i didnt see that machine with a panic or bump bar...

  • @erndawgten yea he said that one didnt have one

  • @erndawgten no doubt,

  • head first he wouldn't of felt anything , its the rest of us that suffer thinking about it.

  • this is similar to being sucked through a jet engine . he wouldnt of felt anything as it was likely head first. Safety 1st !

  • lol hope that company is outa business cheap fuckin bastards buyin used equipment that isnt up to date and now someone is dead....this is why i hate corporations....including the one i work for....i question if they pay off the MOL when they come in cause i see shit illegal there all the time and nothing is ever done about it

  • My granddad saw this happen to someone when he was younger, and apparently they went half way in and when someone tried pulling them out there was only half of them left

  • The narrator said emergency crews were sent there. Why? I'm a good paramedic, but I cant fix THAT. My work partner is a trauma junkie and his dream call is a skydiver's parachute not opening and then falling into a woodchipper. He isnt right in the head, but few medics are.

  • i feel so bad for his family god bless them and him in heaven

  • Wow. This video is pretty scary.

  • bloody death

  • study hard so you can get a better job :P

  • @sakuranbo888 nah i love farming to much. where i work safety comes first and loads of safety equiptment is fitted on machinery and around the farm. cost my boss alot of money but you cant put a price on peoples safety

  • @sakuranbo888

well without these (uneducated workers/peasants ) doing all the real labor like building or paving roads or farming . plumbing. or cleaning sewers whatever just name it ..

these educated people wouldnt even have a building with heating /electricity . water

or windows to see through . because those annoying branches are blocking the sunlight .....

but okay fair enough lets all study and get papers (and parents paying college)

a bit respect for the workers would be nice

  • @undergroundmasterrr You say to respect them after calling them uneducated peasants. Yeah, very respectful.

  • @tonym144 I'm thinking there was sarcasm involved there

  • @tonym144 He was being sarcastic

  • @undergroundmasterrr Plumbers are educated and easily make 60 grand a year..all the union pipe fitters I know are making 60-70k

  • I hope it was quick :o[

  • i never saw such a machine in europe.. we bring it to a factory specialized making pellets or something

  • there are soooo many ways they could make these safer. they just dont

  • Oh no!

  • how did it stop? these things chew up pretty good size trees. .. ...a human is not going to catch it up

  • @mycurse333

textile can do quite a bit of clogging the spinning parts . is my guess.

but yeah a woodchipper is powerful .so it would be just a guess

  • @mycurse333 Most chippers of this size are fed the trees slowly to prevent them from stalling. A human getting pulled in could jam it up pretty quick.

  • @mycurse333 these machines don't like liquidy trees, i once tried feeding a plant through that had high level of water and it blocked up the chute. thats probably why the machine stopped, cause we're like 80 percent water so he would have blocked up the chute.

  • @caruptree That is very comforting to know.

  • I like the saftey measure but I also like a deadman switch. !! TOO sad

  • For the people wondering about a foot pedal stop or a remote stop switch I work for a tree service and thank god never had and accidents just some lost gloves pulled off. But the machine i work with always is ingaged no matter what its the law of the log get the hell out of the way and let the machine do its work

  • They should only be operated with one person ALWAYS on the "kill switch" or "safety bar" and the other person feeding the machine. They should then install a second bar at the rear which would ONLY allow the machine to operate if both switches are in the "on" position.

  • TSA are going to install these at airports, give passengers a third choice, so you can either go through security xray killer porno scanner or get your bits fondled. If you raise you voice or complain about the other 2 options you now have the third option and go through the chipper. It makes flying safer for those left so in TSA minds - justified.

  • Gostem101 sorry to hear that :(

  • Much like everything else in the world common sinse goes a long way, It would have prevented this and saved the Canadian Gov from spending lots of money to tell its people something they should already know. The most dangerouse tool in the world is your brain when its not engaged!

  • ive used wood chippers...i know how powerful those are. saftey is before anything when you use them. panic bar or not your still at risk if proper operating procedures arent taken. after watching this will make me even more carefull using any type of chipper .

  • that's and old chipper early-mid 80's...earlier models were even more brutal (chuck-n-duck)..new chippers are much safer, hey have last grasp cables that hang into the feed chute that connect to the control bar..in case you get hung up......brush chipping is self explanitory, but hundreds of ways to say oops or ouch....machine don't know, machine don't care..it'll chip anything, rakes, muffs, helmets, shovels, ropes, rocks, tarps, pink flamingoes.....people

  • Chain yourself to a kill switch to stop it in case you fall in....sorta like on a jet ski.

  • this is the worst thing i have ever seen. takes the cake. hands down.

  • work with chippers every week.. scares the shit out of me each time im near it.. especially when working next to someone who's rushing to get the job done fast since there motto is "time is money" hate that.

i always take my time and plant my feet/ body properly ensure im clear.

but you just never know, and freak accidents happen.

anyone had a scary situation working with a chipper???

  • Fuck.

  • hope the owner got his arse kicked , why remove the safty bar. even worse the work had only been there few days, many of these tree loppers here in brisabane are shonky

  • Hey Brent,

Nice job on the video.. You mentioned never wear loose gloves or clothes.. That in particular would be loose collared gloves.. the "ugly gloves" cotton with poalms dipped in blue rubber, are excellent for chipping and all kinds of ground work in arboriculture they have the elastic cuffs. I won't chip without them. Another sensible rule would be to insist a worker be trained in operating the feed bar and have 10 hours experience before being left alone when chipping.

  • OMG, thats scary! =/

  • thats why our chippers have a saftey bar.

  • i feel sorry for the guy who die

  • The fact that he was new to the job brings to mind the death of that girl, Debbi Stone, back in 1974, who was a new employee at the "America Sings" attraction at Disney Land. It was a circular building with six stages and six auditoriums which would rotate to each stage between shows. Anyway, she got crushed to death when she was caught between the stationary stage and the moving wall. Really sad, and really gruesome. She was only 18!

-Look it up if you haven't already heard about it.

  • I would like to guess his clothing was caught.

  • at 2 feet per second, it would have been over in about 3 seconds if he went in feet first :(

  • Godamm it, imagine the pain from it.

  • @TheDragonsword123 I doubt he felt much..the body has a mavelous design..and when in a horrific situation, the brain shuts off pain receptors and puts all it's work into survival mode..most people don't feel a thing when they are shot, cut, bit, etc, until after the fact. My hope is he felt nothing but the panic..and then nothing at all. It's a tragedy...

  • @TheDragonsword123 i dont think u would feel anything. the narrator said 2 feet per second. that is quick

  • @TheDragonsword123 weeeeeelllll if u went in head first ud die pretty quick id imagine

  • @TheDragonsword123

It's too fast for that. The initial jerk probably knokced him out cold.

  • @TheDragonsword123 if he went in head first he did int feel a thing

  • @TheDragonsword123 The chipper feeds at 2 FT per second. The last thing he felt was the ride he took towards the blades. He was shredded before he would have a chance to feel any pain.

  • @TheDragonsword123 Pretty sure he didn't feel much pain,He prolly went into shock and it happend so fast he was dead before the pain could setin. The exact same thing happend to a guy in my town a couple years ago! really sucky way to go..

  • @TheDragonsword123 God damn it i don't want to !

  • @TheDragonsword123 There is no pain if your no longer there to feel it

  • oh my god as if a person was pulled into that and crushed n chipped to death, thats got to be like the worst way to die i swear!

  • what a way to die my god

  • That was my dads friend :(

  • @Gostem101 I also knew him. We worked together in Mississauga Ont in the early '90's. He was a prince of a gentleman and a gem of a human being, no kinder or gentler soul existed in this world. He is now playing his beloved drums in heaven and putting smiles on all the faces there, just as he did here on earth. Please everyone, think safety always and never think that it can't happen to you, because it can. We will never forget you Lolly RIP, go Everton !

  • that would suck if the guy went in feet first, but from the looks of it, his head was the first to be chipped, for a quick death. And damn if it had a remote stop, after 30% or so of me had passed through, i dont think i'd want it to stop, i dread being a cripple.

  • poor guy, thats horrible. God bless him and his family

  • @ninmachine109 If God existed, He wouldn't allow horrible things like this to happen.

  • @ninmachine109 Don't bring god into this, he doesn't exist, and if he did, you wouldn't bless anyone with his name, considering how many terrible things he allows.

  • i work in a tree service company and the wood chipper is a nasty machine that can kill you easily, thanks god we had never had and accident w/ the chipper

  • I feel traumatized just watching this.

  • @tomfy1979 LOL mee to, my b/f cuts and trims trees and i help clean up and were were gonna get a chipper, now im kinda scared haha, that just sounds terrible.

  • why couldn't they make it pedal operated where as the only way you could make it work is by stepping on a pedal that way if a worker gets snagged and is pulled off the pedal the whole thing stops at once!

  • @MORPHEUSou812 maybe you should sell this idea to a manufacturing company of these wood chippers..!!

  • @MORPHEUSou812

That's a pretty unique idea, however some branches are longer than others. Sometimes you have to stand close to the chipper while feeding in a piece of wood, sometimes you have to stand several feet further back. A worker might be able to reach the pedal one minute, and not the next. I suppose he could pick up the pedal and move it back and forth as necessary, but most tree service people would probably find it too inconvenient and inefficient.

  • @MORPHEUSou812 Bandit has just come out with that feature!

  • @MORPHEUSou812 why couldn't you make a better idea becuase i dont think one worker, pedalling like a bysicle, is gonna trim a couple hundread pound log

  • @MORPHEUSou812 It would be very awkward to do that, this really isn't a one position job. You need more of a wireless kill switch in your pocket you can hit and kill the machine with.

  • @2strokedetroit not much time to hit a switch if your hand is caught on a limb of a tree. wireless fails at times. It must be mechanical.

  • @MORPHEUSou812 "why couldn't they make it pedal operated where as the only way you could make it work is by stepping on a pedal"

When chipping brush, you usually don't stand in one position. You drag a pile of brush or a single large piece. Where you stand depends on the shape & size of what you're feeding. That makes the pedal idea tricky, but I like the way you think. If a foot pressure system could be devised, It could prevent many tragic accidents.

I think you should persue this.

  • i ran a sawmill for 12 years and this one is actually smaller than the one at the mill but i can tell you first hand that thing was mean. you have to realize this equipment cant tell the differance between a tree and a person so please be carefull no heads up asses while around this stuff it can cost you big time

  • There would be nothing left of him. I have used these things quite a bit and they are very dangerous so you have to be extremely careful.

  • I always said, when the feed bar was pulled on it should reverse the rollers, not feed the chipper, getting dragged in will make it hard for you to push the feed bar ahead, common sense says it would be easier to reach and pull the bar back verses trying to push it head. Maybe they have finally changed the bar direction since I was on some tree crews. Common sense, stand to the side, feed and walk away.

  • i use to do this so often, i was once grabbed and was lucky to smack the bar quick enough to reverse the cycle, i can only imagine how terrible this type of death would be.

  • damn those things are scary

  • cwi = chipping while intoxicated

  • I know this sounds retarded, but I think these workers should be required to wear spandex. Plus I think there should be a pedal mechanism that engages the gears upon pushing and disengages upon release like a car in drive and then neutral. Horrifying!

  • Wow, Can you imagine being at work & seeing this happen to a fellow worker.

  • i nealy had this happen to me but lucky it only took one of my gloves

  • wood chippers still scare the shit out of me

  • They should install a glock at the feed so right before you go in, you can shoot yourself.

  • @Hotrodx199 That's flippin' hilarious, dude!! I'm not laughing at anyone who dies this way but you sure just looked on the bright side! That's F-ing great!! :-)

  • Ouch, that is a terrible way to go. Rest in peace dude.

  • fuckin sad poor guy's family never saw it comin

  • Aw man what a terrible way to die, poor guy

  • a laddy died in my area like that head first..

  • Why would such an unsafe piece of machinery even be in service? Someone should have seen the need for a deadman pedal on this device.

  • My gosh. What a freak accident.

  • damn sad!!!

  • Do not text and chip!

  • has been in the tree service 10 years..........you name it it can go wrong..i've found that most fatal accidents are caused by sheer stupidity inexperience or being in a rush. i myself have almost been pulled in a speed feed wood chipper had i not been standing on the side i would not be here now. point being if you don't know what you're doing and or are not properly trained, you're inviting death

  • man thats like the top 10 on my list on how to go

  • This must be one of the fucking worst ways to die. Jesus, I can't even imagine getting chopped up in it.

  • Great video. Makes a case for common sense in a well-presented and balanced way. Not bureaucratically heavy-handed in a way that puts people's back up. The truth is that accidents happen because of fear - so people rush forward without thought. Governments suck energy out of life to feed themselves, causing most people to rush around like blue-arsed flies. The best way to save lives, is to have a society that can create without fear as the motive. However fear is governments' weapon, sadly. Zen

  • Unsafe equipment Fail / New Empoyee On the Job , a few Days , was he well Trained , I dought it. Fail .. Until these companys Pay out of there po
