Saw Dweezil and the band last night in Bristol, England...such a tight band, great fun, and Dweezil's such a humble man: his Dad would have been proud beyond words about how he's carrying on Zappamusic with such skill, humour and dedication.
I love Deezils take to life towards music and the pop crap as well as a brillant underrated guitarist. So much rubbish today. In my opinon with out bands like Zappa and Jethro tull musical imagination is dead.
Dweezil make me loose my mind... This guy is so overloaded with talent! Saw him a couple of times live and he really is one, if not the, of the most talented guitarists I've ever heard....
@beefnbread - the funny thing is that his picks actually cost a little more than $20. I have a few of them - Red Bear Classic in Extra-Heavy gauge with grips and a right-hand speed bevel. Very nice to have a few of these laying around.
lot people bash eddie ...{maybe he should charge them with assault } - but he has ragtime ,country and western , Hawaiian , Swahili , and zydeco chops ...he is more than just distortion ...yes , there is some indulgence -but there is real musical merit in him too ...i dont listin to much van halen these days ...but when i do -i remember what it was like before him -see , you can like tom waits - AND van halen .
i was there for that! it was so fuckin cool! i got to even go back stage. doesnt get better than that. i didnt even knw what the hell was going to happen i was so in shock to be there.
Better than EVH plays these days. Not only that, if I heard this without knowing it was Dweezil, I would have thought it was EVH. He had the tone down and everything!
@ahioud YOURE A FUCKIN IDIOT!!!!! WHAT A STUPID FUCKIN COMMENT. ERUPTION OVERRATED? THERE WAS NOTHING LIKE THAT GOIN ON. YES GREAT PLAYERS SUCH AS STEVE HOWE, STEVE LUKATHER, RITCHIE BLACKMORE ETC FINGER TAPPED ALSO BUT WHEN EDDIE RECORDED THIS IT CHANGED THE WAY PEOPLE PLAYED AND LISTENED TO GUITAR. THE ONLY SMART THING YOU SAID WAS HE RAISED THE BAR FOR COUNTLESS PLAYERS IN THE 80'S. YOUR A FUCKIN WANKER!!!!
@ahioud well, innovators are seldom THE technical wizards. Kinda like how Americans invent really cool technology and then the Japanese run circles around us making it perfect, tiny and affordable. But they wouldn't have the ideas without us. And both facets are important. However, without the innovators, the copycats/perfectors cannot exist. And you only need 1 innovator for every 10,000 copycats. Eddie is the innovator and all those guitar heroes of the 80's were the copycats.
Dwezz's has an immense talent.. sadly only as a performer, not as a writer, but I'm so glad he's so dedicated to keeping his father's awesome music alive..
Awesome story. Yeah Dweezil was into Van Halen, and Eddie was hero to him just like to many other kids his age back in 81, including myself. Nice to have your dad being Frank Zappa to actually have Eddie show up at your house. Lol Yeah that would have been mind blowing, seeing your hero show up in the jump suit from the "Women and Children First" album! Dweezil is a very good student of Eddie's style, indeed. Always has been.
Thing about it is, 30 some odd years ago, this was THE solo..but its been played so much( and usually not very well), that now its just another quitar solo.Sorry if this borders on blasphemy, but its true
ver very very funny story... my dad new Astor Piazzola, and as I was i child i remember that he´s always with my father, visiting him, ghaving dinner... back in argentina !!!
Dweezil is right up there with the Best of all time, in my opinion, i know ,thats sayin alot........but if you have seen Z.P.Z., i think you'll agree..........Will in Worthington, Ma.
Is it me or is he being a little cocky here? "I'll never be able to play that" but EVH is friggin easy. Say what you want but Eddie is a genius in his own right.
@konanian I think he's saying that about his dad's music. Not so much about EVH. I've seen Eddie lots of times. But seeing Dweezil last year BLEW ME AWAY.
Exactly. He's saying his Dad was better than EVH, harder to play. They're different.
EVH influenced way more players. Dweezil is an excellent player of other player's covers. When he puts out his own "Joe's Garage", or "1984" then he'll be guitar hero stuff. I've always gotten this vibe from the Zappa/Vai/Satriani camp that Eddy wasn't quite up to their level yet. They sure pay him a lot of lip service. EVH might not be the same player anymore but he'sstill alive in some folks minds.
@gabchaos94 Looks like you've never bought a Dweezil CD.
EVH is not in Frank Zappa's league, no one is. Frank WAS the league, there will ne'er be another. EVH, also, has his own league, but Frank was Frank, and Dweezil is, well Dweezil.
i was fucking at that show!! it was the fucking best show ever. the best part is i got to go back stage and hang out with joe travers. no dweezil though ): dweezil has eddies style down PERFECT.
He is an unbelievable musician. One of the best guitar players around today. What has accomplished over the last few years alone. To play the all lines & solos from Frank Zappas music is no easy task, as well as his other repertoire.
That was the fuckingest awesomestest version of Eruption I've ever heard ... but the half the crowd are to full of themselves to realize you can like more than one thing, and if it's good it's good. Lameres. But Dweezil!!! Next time he's on tour I won't miss it ... hehe *blush*
Great post!! pretty good sound pickup with whatever you used. I saw him live at Nokia theatre in LA this month, great showmanship, he blew the place away!!! Thanks for da post!!
what can ya say its an illness spread down through the generations frank claimed he didnt really know how to play that well that it was improvisation i guess dweezil was improvising too yeah uh huh theres a reason certain people have it and he has it just like his old man and eddie
Has anyone noticed the reference to 'Inca Roads' in 'Eruption?' I just noticed it recently, while trying to figure the piece out (and slowed it down). I don't know if it's an intentional nod to Frank, or a subconscious thing, or a complete coincidence, but it's there! (Maybe it's exo-Frank 'conceptual continuity!') I haven't ever heard or read about anyone pointing it out before. Anybody with me? Need a hint?
This is from Wik if you look up Ted Templeman: He is also the voice that pleads "Come on Dave, gimme a break" in the song "Unchained", to which Dave (David Lee Roth) replies "One break, coming up!".
I was at the 1st Dweezil '' zappa plays zappa '' tour when he 1st started that tour at the Warfield theatre in san francisco. A very amazing concert. I also saw Frank in berkley on the '' zoot alures '' tour. Dweezil is awesome!!! :)
The best performance I heard the solo "Eruption", heard tributes, teachers who tried to do but never heard anything better and clear now, we're talking about Dweezil Zappa gentlemen! you may already be one of the best guitarists in the world
@rallyivan1234 Yeah, this one was one of the two best covers of Eruption I've ever heard too. The other cover is made by Pete Thorn, he has this video of it here at you tube! Go and check it out!! :D
yeah I always liked dweezil.even in the 80's. he was young but i knew he would get real good. love his dads playing style. its got an odd randomness but some how fits perfectly. I know frank didnt just play randomly . he could play anything he wanted.his style just kind of sounds that way. in a way.and you gotta love his totally rocked out tone
Great story !!! Jeez, What Dweezil say's is True.... Before, MTV, Before the Internet(you-tube) . When we listened to those Album's and didn't know anything about the Artist (personally) ...We had all but, our Imagination...Those Singer's/Guitarists were so special,, Super-natural -or-Super-Hero's.. so Grand !! EXP:: my view of Ozzy has Totally changed since seeing him on TV,(late 90's)..I still like him, But I don't "worship" him anymore .. :)
LOL , Dweezil, dead on brother, very impressive, can you play the intro too Mean Streets??? Bet ya can.

Check my page, bitches, a friend has made me Ed's Star guitar from the WACF era. Great story, btw.

I've read in a guitar magazine interview with Ed very long ago, and he said the only one guitarist that sounds like him playing is Dweezil.

It wasn't Eddie that said "Come on Dave give us a break".
It was the producer Ted Templeman.

yeah I always liked dweezil.even in the 80's. he was young but i knew he would get real good. love his dads playing style. its got an odd randomness but some how fits perfectly.
