  • Angelical!

  • @SavHub. If you think Kiri is screaming in the high voice, it demonstrates your complete lack of knowledge about good vocal technique. She is exactly where she needs to be to produce this very difficult vocal line. The moment you can produce any better be sure to show all of us. Gheorgiu is a wonderful singer, but lacks the ease of vocal line that Kiri has demonstrated over the years.

  • When I saw her perform, you could've heard a piece of lint fall on the ground the concert hall was so quiet... I was so sad that I wouldn't be able to see her perform in an opera after Vanessa, but I love how she still tours. Exquisite...

  • Kiri was Puccini's inspiration for this aria. Well, maybe not literally, but I'm sure the master hoped it would sound just like her rendition.

  • Decent rendition, but I prefer Angela Gheorghiu - Angela has a better legato (especially in her Amsterdam 2005 concert for Queen Beatrix) and her upper range is more pleasant. In this clip Kiri, it seems to me, gets too close to screaming.

  • uau . . . wonderful... great

  • She makes it look so easy! Brava Kiri!

  • Kiri is always amazing.

  • Once again I discovered an absolute incredible piece of music on The Sopranos.

  • this is what made me a fan

  • where does Kiri get these dresses?

  • A room with a view... the lady brought some of the greatest scenes to life with her voice... so beautiful... so beautiful...

  • i first heard fleming sing this aria and was very much moved. heard it the second time from kiri te kanawa and tears flowed down my cheeks. amazing and sublime.

  • Kiri rocks the house!!! Not quite Leontyne, but damn close!!!

  • such a wonderful sound--- not too bright -not too dark - has a gold smoothness and a honey edge, but still retains that wonderful brilliance on top .-- Always easy to listen to

  • The gown looks like the hastily re-assembled remnants of Joseph's costume from "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat". What a sack!

  • @vocalissimo1 It is a great compliment to the voice and performance that all you can crticise is her dress.

  • OMG!!! Almost too beautiful 2 bear. Love it!!!

  • This is wonderful but Fleming brings a stunning rendition. There seens to be an inner quality that comes out in her singing which raises it to a whole other level.

  • @gczwarkiel Kiri and Renee are heads above therest-Fleming is a truly serious artist and supreme vocalist-- But the sound from Kiri is the most pleasing I've ever heard -- and I've listened to many from 1910- the present -- I 've always gotten the impression that Miss Tekanawa knows she was great and just sang for the public--Miss Fleming sings for herself-& the public -trying to sing perfectly every time-Nothing wrong with that either! The torch was passed - I agree!!!

  • @redgrapeskins I agree with you in that one simply cannot go wrong with either of these artists and I think you bring up a good point about Renee and it's probably that special something I hear in her voice that is unique.Renee feels the music as much as she sings the aria. She projects the sound that conveys that she is truly enjoying a blissful moment, a certain joie de vivre if you will. This seems consistent with her personality in general. Take care.

  • When I hear this aria I always remember how George swoops Miss Honeychurch with one arm to steal a kiss! So beautiful!

  • @KatieKaboom21 --Yep, and it was Kiri on the soundtrack, as you surely must know. Enchanting film, absolutely enchanting.

  • @KatieKaboom21 So true! This song is why I fell in love with opera and Kiri Te Kanawa! I consider it my absolute favorite song!

  • @KatieKaboom21 It's one of the most romantic scenes ever.

  • How effortlessly she spins such glorious sounds. Exquisite as only she can be. Brava!

  • so beautiful , brings tears to my eyes

  • In this aria Kiri's voice has a light touch, clear, concise, not overburdening the tone with emphasis that in other singers can become distorted at times. A very nice performance indeed! Bravo! ;- )

  • Actually, having heard Fleming, Price, Gheorghiu AND Caballé, IMHO this one wins the prize. I was taken by Arteta's version from Washington Opera as well. Two very great artists letting the composer tell a magical story.

  • I'm sorry ...she's not natural...always fake. You have much better versions: Renée Fleming, Leontyn Price, Angela Gheorghiu...

  • @myaskovsky2002 what do you mean by fake?

  • @myaskovsky2002 btw, I don't really like this singer either. I was just wondering what you meant by fake...

  • @myaskovsky2002 YOu have got to be kidding right- fake? What is fake about it?. She is al naturale. Te Kanawa is a great artist and there is nothing fake about what she sings- it's SINCERE! More than I can say for the the 3 currenr Divas..

  • @myaskovsky2002 Don't even mention Leontyne in the presence of the other two. I put Kiri and Leontyne in the same level. Gheorghiu is not really suited to this song, and Renée Fleming usually misses the point somehow. Marketing is one thing. Talent another. Most people on youtube know what is good and what is not.

  • She sings this better than anyone I've heard so far.....Bel Canto.

  • ahhh.. the younger Kiri, pre diva, almost... so fresh, natural, in her homeland, a force of Nature, breathing the music with every pore and vocal cord. A gem... thank you for posting, this is so touching.

  • Good! But I prefer Sarah's verson.

  • a bit rushed for my taste, I love Dame Kiri, but I cannot get over Montserrat Caballè`s version of this aria...she takes her sweet time and barely ever takes a breath!

  • @GEF69 I was wondering if I was the only one who likes Montserrat Caballe's version best. I am no fan of hers but no one did this song better. Kiri was great and others are good too, but there can only be one who is (or was) the best.

  • @Perfidiame I think you are right. Cabelle always sings naturally. Still, both are far better than the big three now - Netrebko, Fleming and Gheorghiu. I find these three "forced", although Fleming is slightly better.

  • @Perfidiame there can only be one? that sounds so ignorant.

  • Прелесть!!! Моя любимая певица!

  • Marvelous voice, beautiful performance, lovely diction.

  • funny dress, bad italian diction - but very fine singing :-))

  • I love her I love her

  • Dame Kiri stands head and shoulders above the sopranos of her vintage in this repertoire.. The instrument is so lovely and she treats it and the music with respect and utter love. A wonderful artist. Just finished listening to Leontyne Price--oh my god --another compelling voice, and a great artist. We are so blessed to have heard these wonderful artists who have enriched our lives with their vision.

  • what a beautiful beautiful voice. One of my favourite arias. Wish I had been there.

  • magnifica..

  • Priceless

  • sad to say but I first heard this off the end of a The Sopranos episode - pretty hard to deny it being something amazing

  • I love her performance.

  • Oh Kiri, live and in the open air! Well done - absolutely wonderful! I hope you´re enjoying life now!

  • Beautiful..

  • Wow, beautiful. Such a lovely youthful sound from a mature voice. Wow.

  • She's neither a person of color or white, she's human...could we leave it at that?

  • oh my! Well away from all the bitterness! I love Kiri and and glad she represnted singers of color so well!

  • Leontyne Price is a singer of color. 'nawa is a straight white christian.

  • q maravilla, por favooor!

  • god this is amazing...she rocks my world

  • You need an education in African American history. Virtually all my opinions are mainstream among people of color and can be found in the autobiography of Malcolm. Yes, the man whose face is on a U.S. first-class stamp.

  • @dawg00000

Dame Kiri Te Kananwa is a singer of colour, and much loved and respected throughout the world, not just the opera world.

Her later professional life has been devoted to putting back into music for young artists.

  • why are some black americans such as dawg0000 such jokes?? I know several and theyr good laidback people who understand and are comfortable with the world

  • I think just this one Andre. S/He is the only one to have commented here that I have read.

Living with racism everyday must be very difficult, and can cause emotional scars and bitterness in its victims.

Kiri has does much to redress this issue in New Zealand.

It is our challenge to walk a day in another's shoes.

  • WTF this is supposed to be a music video..dawg00000 needs to wise up..its true that black people are their own enemies..I am not white and am a student of history. if you look back into time every major civilization whether caucasoid(and thats a very wide range of peoples), mogoloid(same here) or african have all made mistakes and committed crimes over their course of development. its how we stand up to the past and prepare for the future which counts. look at china and japan.I pity dawg00000

  • @dawg00000 As an African-American female age 62,I find this comment so stupid that I refuse to believe that it is real; this sounds like the thinking of little kids who think it is "cool" to say "fart" and giggle. Some little kids never grow up ... sad.

  • YMcB1947 You've been brainwashed by the powers that be in ameriKKKa. A sister like you needs to be educated. I suggest you read some Malcolm.

  • FLATASS white folk have no idea what people of color have to endure EVERY TIME they wake up and realize what they must endure in irreversibly racist ameriKKKa. The present half-white prez is a puppet of flatass straight white christian males. Charles Barron of the NYC Council: he tells the TRUTH about people of color vs. the pasty race.

  • to dawg: please stop writing such stupid things. Music is one of the only things where color nor nationality matters. Kiri has a voice from heavenl, Price is a wonderful singer, Callas is the best, and Jessye Norman is great. So just shut up if you have racial problems yourself, you just mix all things up !

  • Racial intolerance when it produces the excesses of the Southern US where they hanged young black men (and children) from trees or the hideous Nazi ideology that eresulted in theslaughter of millions of innocent Jews makesd me angry.

But when prejudice is so strong it trumps the loves of music or beauty...then I find this so sad. Such people are to be truly pitied.

    Aled

  • @dawg00000 I find your comments truly offensive. truly. How do you really know she has NO maori heritage? Joan Sutherland thought she did, and she is just as racist as you are.(Joan is). Wow.

  • kgarmaker123, calling pasty people boring doesn't equal centuries of rape, lynching, murder and torture of people of color by straight white christian males.

  • Is this your excuse to advance horrible racist ideas... What would you say if I commented on a video of Leontyne Price and said .. she is just another boring black singer????? Wow... get off the racist stuff and stop making excuses for it.. too. And for the record.. I never raped, lynched, murdered, or tortured people of color and neither did my ancestors as they were immigrants .

  • you would be a racist for saying Leotyne was boring--or ANY person of color such as Fity or Lil Wayne. Only white folk can be racist. People of color cannot be racist since white folk started the race wars; people of color are merely defending themselves. Remember that FACT.

  • That is the biggest crock of bull. Racism is making a comment about someone, of whatever race that is negative just of the person's color... and remember white is a color. Just like black, yellow red, and brown. And for the record, I love Leonytne Price and have paid to hear her 3 times in my life. I find it offensive when i hear the stuff you are spouting from anyone.

  • kgarmaker, at least we agree that Leontyne Price makes pasty white singers sound like the fart of a cockroach that crept up Muhammad's derriere.

  • No .. I love white singers too.. for Instance, Leontyne adored Maria Callas, as do I.. and she was a Greek. Price has even now a glorious voice ( always did and got to the top of her profession because she was TALENTED and deserving) and may she live to be 1000.. she is also a patriot. she loves her country.. Admirable woman.. I love her in so many ways.

  • Good heavens... Instead of enjoying the music, you launch into a silly attack on an entire country? That's not the America I live in. I'm not white, and I have always been treated with respect and dignity in America, until I read your awful post. I pity you. Your assertion that "all people of color" have "supremely brilliant" voices shows who the real racist is. If you want to find out, look in the mirror!

  • If you think that hatred, bigotry, and ignorance are the exclusive domain of white people, then you are as hopeless as you are hate-filled and intolerant. Harriet Tubman, Martin Luther King Jr., and President Obama would hate every racist thing you've said. I leave you with a variation of the famous Serenity Prayer: Lord, grant me the serenity to accept the PEOPLE I cannot change, the courage to change the ONE that I can, and the wisdom to know that it's ME. Good luck.

  • And that last statement... " white folk started the race wars" this groups all "white folk" together, as if we all were one, we all approved, like we all participated. I am hear to inform you that all of us did not participate or approve of the subjagation of the black race..... Just because we are "white" does not make us guilty, thats called racial profiling, and i am sure you know what that is.

  • white folk are dedicated to continuing the present PSYCHOLOGICAL lynching and rape of young Black minds through INSTITUTIONAL racism...that's why massive affirmative action and reparations in the trillions of $ against ameriKKKa are needed to correct the worst injustice in world history: the war against people of color. That war by flatass straight white christian males continues to make the gulags and the jewish holocaust seem like picnics on a lazy Sunday afternoon.

  • Listen, it was pasty white people who banded together in outrage, southerners and northerners to free you and to give you the rights that you deserved. So NOT ALL white people oppressed you.. in this country we run by majority and.unfortuanately, it takes a long time sometimes to change idiots minds.

  • You Racist Idiot. What contribution do you bring to the world or this posting with your comments. Who cares if she's not a maori, who cares?

  • I love Kiri te kanawa. I've been looking for a video of this aria forever! Thank you so much for posting this. I am a huge fan of hers!

  • this is one of Kiri Te Kanawas more terrifying hairstyles : )

it's totally okay though because she sings like a goddess

  • Price is better than Caballe, but Kiri is better. The purity of tone and creaminess is not in the other two voices like it is in Kiri's.

  • Agreed. I also prefer Price to Caballe. I wouldn't say that Kiri is better than Leontyne though. I put them first equal.

  • Last night at the New Zealand Embassy in DC I heard Kiri say her 1st inspiration as a young singer was Ms. Price and almost equally Renata Tebaldi.

  • Fantastic. You were very lucky to attend that occasion.

I was in England and New Zealand too in the 1960s. In those days, it was all Leontyne Price. Victoria de Los Angeles was there also, and Elisabeth Schwarzkopf was still a star, but more of the 50s.

I think that Kiri also mentioned she was influenced by Deanna Durbin too - but that was on another occasion.

  • I find it so interesting that you can simply say one is better than the other. All were/are such different voices and better artists than the young singers of today. All were/are true divas and slaves to the art.

You speak of creaminess- how much more creamy could a voice get than Price's? Price's lower register is hands down fuller, richer, and creamer than Kiri's. However, I enjoy both immensely. How can we justify comparing these brilliant voices? Just enjoy! :)

  • Thank you for this . Kiri live footage is not all that common .her luscious full yet bright tone --the way she supports the tone . the attack right on the note. Each vowel full She has a beautiful instrument She didn't sing that often at the Met did she? Every aria and popular song I have heard her sing she completely owns and dominates like the very few great voices do Price never had this luscious beauty of tone phrasing and never sang with this delicacy

  • price hadn't the "beauty of tone"???? are you deaf or just crazy???

  • She sang there about 125 times and will sing a role there in February 2010. It is a speaking role, but they say she will sing it.

    2/9/74 was her debut.

  • Actually this is the aria I remember hearing her sing in the film A Room With A View when I was a teenager. Absolutely gorgeous. My favourite scene and aria of all time!

  • It is sung in that movie but recorded years before and chosen for it along with another.

  • I know:)

  • i love everytime i hear you wahine, the choicest of all voices i have ever heard, you are from another world and i don't even know what you are singing about....

  • bravo!!!

  • A barleyfield, poppies and a kiss!!

  • Indeed beautiful.. I just happened to listen to Monserrat Caballe with the same aria.. I feel guilty comparing.. nevertheless... Caballe is hors-concours in this aria..

  • none better to be or have been than mz Kanawa the most cherished voice I have had the pleasure to listen to

    Bravissimo Diva!

  • Not comments , not words.

Mrs Kanawa so beautiful, so kind, so splendorous. Regia

    Bravo

  • for kiri, this is just one of those songs that belongs to the artist, it was just meant for her voice- like pavarotti's nessum dorma or angela gheorgiu's si mi chiamano mimi

  • OMG....shocked at 1:48....very controlled voice...like a song bird.

  • Rare to hear both a unique AND gorgeous voice. Such a dream to listen to this.

  • Have you heard Leontyne Price sing this on her "Blue" album? I was a teenager when the album came out and bought it. As beautiful as all the arias on the recording were, nothing (IMHO) could touch Price singing this aria. Try to find it--you'll hear how different the two sopranos sound. It's a good thing ...

  • How is incredible dame! beatiful voice and absolutely personal. Great!

  • She owns this aria! Nobody does it better.

  • yes. you must hear Price. the beauty of tone and effortless top notes. She is a national treasure.

  • So beautiful brings tears to my eyes !

  • Brava!

  • She sings with seemingly little effort which is remarkable. I'm fascintated with watching her tongue and seeing it move around in what my voice teachers would have always cautioned me not to do because it earmarks tension. However, I do not hear nor get a sense that there is an ounce of tension in Dame Kiri's voice at all. My only complaint is that I wish the tempo was just a shade slower so we could really languish in her voice a bit longer.

  • elisarig. Maybe you could write to Kiri and get some tips. She may disagree with your teacher or even say that it works for her, but would not advise it for others. Kiri is a very approachable person. She has her own website.

  • this is just the most beautiful singing in the world :-)

  • man i love this song!

i have it on the room with a view soundtrack!

  • stunningly beautiful and so effortlessly sung.

  • Love it!

  • How beautiful!..

Yes she is very focused but it all comes out effortlesly elegant..

I also love her posture on this video and the caressing wind that softly brushes her hair. It really goes with the aria..

  • The best!!

  • she's the best

  • imádlak Kiri

  • beautiful!!!

  • I want to be her.

She makes it seem so easy!

  • My God! She´s definitevely my favorite. She is incredible. God speaks through that wonderful voice.

  • I do not know why I always start crying when listening to such beautiful pieces...

    WIWWM?

  • What are you talking about?

    She sounds beautiful!

    This doesent suck at all!

  • I prefer Leontyne too! But Kiri is beautiful here. Actually Kiri Te Kanawa is always focused and consistent. She does a great job here!

  • it is hard to tell if god exists, though it is easy to feel divinity

  • Incredibly gorgeous. What a magnificent and glorious voice. As much as I like Flemming, Nebrebko, etc., I feel no one can surpass Dame Kiri. The best!

  • Comparing Kiri and Netrebko is similar comparing a deer and a pig.

  • Please let me know who is the deer and who is the pig.

  • LOL..

  • INCREDIBLE. I agree with Paulotomaso...Kiri OWNS this!

  • mi commuove in ogni sillaba che pronuncia...

  • she owns this. Kiri is just the best ever.

  • Bravissima Kiri!

  • you need to see A Room With a View, folks

  • Kanawa gives us not only the most beautiful version but she and fleming are the two only soprani who have managed to sing this aria correctly - this is one of the most badly sung arias in the entire soprano repertoire

  • Check out the Brooke Pulin version just before you take that verdict to the bank!

  • Brooke Pulin needs to learn not to screech her high notes, it's painful for the audience. Along the same path, she need to figure out how NOT to scoop, it causes her already screechy high notes to sound under-pitch. FINALLY, brooke pulin needs to control her ego.

  • This gives me chills every time I hear her.

  • I heard her do this accompanied by piano in her farewell tour. I remember after she had finished there was a moment of silence. I think we were all thinking the same thing. Simply brilliant.

  • Check out Brooke Pulin's version before you make any final decisions on this piece...

  • the wind blowing her hair is a wonderful touch :)

  • OH! she gets me everytime!

  • i think her voice sounds bigger in the other one but this is good...its more subtle.

  • This is one of my favorite concerts. Kiri looks especially gorgeous here....not to mention the wonderful singing.

  • In this concert, I don't know why did the shot usually shoot the close-up on her face.....

  • check out Brooke Pulin's version of this song before you make a final decision!

  • No matter the version, she sings this aria wonderfully. It's magical.

    Thanks for posting ^^

  • consider the Brooke Pulin versio before you make your mind up!

  • brookepulin, I guess anyone will try anything to find an audience. You have to be silly if you think that effort is going to change anyones mind.

  • With a name like fornicate, excuse me if I don't take your comments to heart!

    Brooke's Dad

  • It's only a 'nick' - I haven't used someone else's effort to promote my own cause, at least.

  • I went to see Ms. Pulin's video, and I must say she sounds like she's on the right track but my friend, she has a looong way to go. Certainly not even close to Dame Kiri te Kanawa's quality yet.

  • Thanks, I can appreciate that.keep watching!

    Her Dad

  • I think you will love this version by Kiri too!

    Love,

    DameKiriLover
