  • Tiger vs Hogan debate: Hogan wins. Tiger plays against a weak field and his power/current equipment minimizes importance of full swing accuracy. Tiger = best putter of all time, Hogan =best ball striker.

  • @grinchychristmas

You said it. But Hogan was a great putter when he was in his prime--just check out what fellow competitors were saying at that time, not how he became later on. It's true that Tiger is a surpassingly great putter on the weeks when he's sharp, as good a short putter as any pro in history...but to say "best of all time" puts him clearly ahead of a minor player named Jack Nicklaus, and it's kind of hard to make that case.

  • @sandwah9: I really like point 3, which I think was the real point of this video, not Tiger-Hogan debate. Good stuff!

  • point 1: Hogan would throw up watching where Tiger hits the ball off the tee. point 2: put Hogan in modern equipment with the modern manicured courses, and he would still be as dominant as he was. point 3: by the top of his swing, defined as where the club stops going back, Hogan has ALREADY moved his weight to the left side, such that ll he has to do now is drive his right side and right foot as hard as he wants.

  • @sandwah9

Hogan would throw up until he used the newer equipment and hit it close to where Tiger is.

    OR...

Hogan would throw up until whoever set up the match forced Tiger to go to the old persimmon and old ball, where he'd find out that he'd be doing well to hit it anywhere near where Nicklaus and Snead hit it. (Don't even try BSing your way through a counterargument, naysayers. It's been tried out on a tour practice tee already, and nobody came close.)

  • what a swing, no way he had a reverse pivot, great video. check out my swing and comment please :)

  • The courses have changed with the equipment, but no single golfer has ever dominated in his time like Tiger has.

  • I think you forgot about Jack Nicklaus and the courses havnt changed, most of the majors are played on courses witch are 60+ years old.

  • ironmaiden; wrong answer; most of the courses especially the majors have been made longer and tougher, but the reason is the equipment has changed so much even an old man like me can still bust a driver out 280 to 300 yards!!

  • timofmya; that is an understatement...I have two sets of golf clubs...one set modern day, the other old school woods and irons....practice with the old school first and then you will appreciate the new equipment!!

  • @timofmya Not even Byron Nelson?

  • I will admit that the courses are somewhat more difficult today but I think you would have to admit that the equipment is just perhaps a little better today. Balls that explode off the face with custom made trajectory, HUGE driver faces with shafts that can be dialed in for whatever trajectory you want, offset clubs with perimiter weighting. Give me a break... Hogan was the man, is the man and will always BE the man. But Tiger is also pretty good.

  • Jack Nicklaus (still the man to beat) was asked if Tiger was the best ball striker he'd ever seen, and he said no, Hogan was, easily the best he'd ever seen. Tiger is phenomenal and may well beat Jack's record.

  • Hogan IS the man for so many reasons - I find no reason to go into detail here among friends :D

  • right knee kicked in big time

loaded up nice .... whackkkkk !!!!!!

    best swing ever

  • shawn valid points

I still have to go with hogan as the best repeatable swing ever - no better ball striker in history.

  • I like tiger's swing better, and it looks nicer. but tiger has never hit 36 GIR in a row!

  • Tiger hasn't hit 36 GIR in a row which is a great achievement but Tiger doesn't have the luxury of much larger fairways and much, much shorter rough.

  • whats GIR

  • Greens in Regulation

  • MPDMediaCenter; wrong answer, just look at the British Opens of old...the rough was up over their knees depending on which British links it was played on!!

  • No thats a silly point. Yes the long whispy rough at the British Open has always been a feature but that misses the point really, besides Hogan played in very few British Opens. Generally, the rough, such as the first cut, second cut and beyond is now much longer and thicker often making it impossible to reach greens even if you miss the fairway by a small amount.

  • @MPDMediaCenter

Are you seriously out of your mind? You think the courses now are _harder_ than they were then, factoring in changes in equipment and grooming? You cannot be serious.

  • tiger does not have the best swing ever. hogans far surpasses tigers. the reason tiger wins is that his iron play is excellent, he might be the greatest clutch putter ever, and the fact that his mental focus is astounding. If hogan didnt get in the car accident tiger would be chasing hogans major record, not nicklaus'

  • You would have to agree that the courses today are far more difficult..There's more competition for tiger...He has to beat atleast ten to fifteen guys that are capable of winning any given tournament.

  • A straight line is the fastest way to connect two points...Ben Hogan's swing (a beautiful one at that) is a little too long for my taste....Tiger's is quick and to the point...Both swings have had a tremendous amount of success, but in 'my opinion' there's none better than tiger (easy for me to say..lol)...Camillo Villegas is pretty close though, followed by Vijay and Ernie....If you want to talk about ball striking? How about Sergio? Beautiful ball striking, he can't putt yet...

  • Tiger's swing is formed off Ben Hogan's... he get up reading the book he wrote.

  • I think Hogan's SWING had better results than Tiger Woods. What Tiger Woods wins tournaments with is his PUTTING STROKE. You do have an excellent point, though- On some days, Jim Furyk has a better swing than Ernie Els.

  • actually, clubs back then were around 60-62" due to the fact that there were too many trees in the world and all the extra wood that was cut down was made into really long shafts of woods for the clubs.

  • Uh, dkashmir...you're crazy.

  • Is it just the camera angle or does the club at time :02 look like it's about 60" long? Hogan's hands aren't that high, but extended far back (away from the target) and yet the club head appears to be 3' closer to the target than his head!

  • I like how he transitioned before his backswing was ever done.

  • He stored and retained more power from his downcock at the top to the middle of his downswing (hands by right leg) than anybody.

  • the best golf swing ever.............he hit it so late

  • nice peice..hogan the great!

  • ya know, i dislike analysts who critique the swings of the best players in the world. There is a reason those players are playing and the analysts are watching.

  • The Reason- because tour players are talented and most of em fluke into golf swings. (more or less) You're right in that these guys don't know WHAT they are doing. (they just DO it) But it is naive to think that it should be that easy for just anyone. It's a nice thought but is not reality. And I'm not discounting what people are capable of by any means. I think most are capable of much more than they think and are lead to believe. Most just also need help in one way or another to bring it out.

  • i think you misunderstood my point. My point was that the analysts talk like they know the golf swing and what the best players need to do to improve, but the analysts could not come close to outplaying the best players. The players have the talent to be good and in golf talent outweighs knowledge of proper swing techniques every time.

  • I disagree. Of course you need ability. But to me all it concerns is your potential and how easy you pick up the game. But everyone underestimates knowledge. The misinformation and ignorance doesn't surprise me. BTW in case you're wondering...I CAN play. And BTW again...I can agree that there IS a lot of misinformation in golf. Half of the analysts out there don't know what the heck they're talking about. TVs...mags...LOADS of BS out there. Truly...

  • Yes, there is so much information out there in reference to golf that one can get real easily confused and just plain fucked up about what to do in order to address a problem. I agree LOADS of BS out there.

  • Some say he didn't have transition or finish,, that makes his swing the greatest,, so this video is very interesting, yeah, One Piece indeed

  • cp i must say dszgbfaengkl dmfk ghkjkxdfkjhkgkgfb
