no, Cloud was being controlled by Jenova due to the cells and all. he was about to kill Aerith until he came to his senses. he failed in doing the act so Jenova used a different clone instead

that's why in Advent Children, Cloud felt guilty for almost killing Aerith and not protecting her from death
