Most of you are too young to remember the show "You Are There," narrated by Walter Cronkite. This was the theme music. It is my favorite fanfare. It is also included in Copland's Third Symphony.
Fanfare was written to honor the American Soldier in WWII....and at that point the war was far from over. The music continues to resonate in our hearts and minds today just as it did 67 years ago.
@herongray356 Correction. Fanfare for the Common man was a result of the government commissioning a composer to write a fanfare for these war heroes. This was NOT written for a war hero, but for a common man who was a hero in this war. Aaron Copland wrote this... Fanfare for the common man... for the common man.
Everytime i hear this i just think about the Moon landing and how much of an accomplishment that was and makes me wanna say "that's one small step for man one giant leap for mankind"
If you like this piece try listening to final movement of Copland's Third Symphony which starts and ends with the fanfare and contains some wonderful variations in between.
This is my favorite musical piece. I served in Spec Ops for 6 years, and have buried many friends and two Uncles. This music represents freedom to me, and the sacrifices made by so many.
This song isn't about being patrioic. Its about having pride in yourself. It is a tribute recognizing the abilities within each and every one of us and respecting these traits. Its about realizing that we are important and independent and above everything else, equal. Being common but being something extrordinary.

Bollocks, you are going to hear European music if you go and see those orchestras.
Berlin Phil are playing Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique tonight
LSO are playing Bruckner 7 and Schubert 8 tmw night
The Vienna Phil are putting on a concert of both richard and johann strauss on the 3rd june, including music of ravel, chabrier and offenbach
you rarely find american composers on european bills, and for good reason. American art music of worth, is rarely composed for orchestra
