Absoutely stunning machine. Too bad this video looks like a piss poor power point presentation some guy whipped up in about 15 minutes. The 'transformation' appears as a UAV, can anyone confirm?
@diziplesp it does dumbass its called new age stealth, its consealed inside the aircraft, they pop out from panels, god go look at the F-22, all its shit is consealed inside panels
boeing done it again nice job guys I am lovin it. It dont take a rocket scientist to figure that is a stealth. judging by it looks I say it close to being undetectable by radar if at all. Hate fly against that cause who ever flys that will have to drop on his enemy hehe. Cant wait to see what other new toys they are going come out with next.
I'm assuming that this is yet another computer-assisted lifting body. Does it fly like a tank, or does it have any redeeming manouevrability characteristics?
@gsmonks Actually, according to Wikipedia, to reduce costs and speed up development, the demonstrator aircraft used an off-the-shelf turbofan and manual hydraulic controls; the shape is aerodynamically stable enough to fly without computer correction.
@liocon. The only reason why the aircraft Bird of Prey is so advanced is because of McDonnell Douglas. They merged with Boeing. Some of the best planes in the world were created by McDonnell Douglas. Such as the F-4,F-15, and f-18. I wouldn't say that Boeing did all of this, considering that they became better, because of the engineers and ideas from McDonnell Douglas. Just saying
So is this project going to materialize into something, or is it gonna remain just at this technology demonstrator stage? What intrigues me on this design is its wings design. Does anyone know what advantages that design offers?
@VaderXIII Yeah, and I want to see a steep flailing recovery maneuver.
Come to think of it, why aren't the same seed-like neutral recovery architectures, as exhibited by 'Space Ship One' being incorporated in proto-planes like this? High G black out?... your plane physically stalls and settles into a spiral down recovery pattern.
I'm assuming it's stealth... Am I wrong? Also is the engine turbine like a 737 or is it like the jet engine in an F-15 or an F-16 or something like that?
@MattB613 - Yes, the aircraft incorporates stealth technologies. The engine provides 3,190 lbf of thrust, weighs approx 500 lbs, and is the same class of turbofan engine typically found on business jets. The F-16's engine provides 17,800 lbf of thrust normally, 29,160 lbf with afterburner, weighs 3,740 lbs, and uses a more complex/advanced compression system.
@datzfast - It was built to demonstrate new design and manufacturing methodologies. In the 1970's-80's Boeing was criticized for the high cost and time it took to deliver aircraft like the b1-B and the B2. I believe this project was intended to show Boeing's streamlined and more cost efficient design techniques in place in the 90's.
@lasersailor587 but Boeing was the Junior partner in the project, and it is said that when Northrop's CEO informed Boeing's ceo about the stealth bomber project he had no idea that there was even a project.
@MediaBlitzDIR I think it also has alot to do with composite tech becoming so good, the epoxy and laminates industry has made great advancements, carbon, kevlar and epoxies are the greatest materials to work with, unbelievable strength, durability, lightweight and fairly simple to use
@SSJpickle This wasn't even the peak of our technology when it was built. A lot of what went into this had been around for years. This aircraft was nothing more than a horse and pony show. Still, I think it's one cool jet.
@joelrthomas Boeing's X-32 would have been going into squadron service right now if the better aircraft would have been picked in the JSF competition. Boeing lost on looks only. their V/stol engine design was simpler, lighter, & more dependable. The F-35 is facing delays due to the Weight problems, & lift fan shortfalls. oh well. The air force will probably have to buy Super Hornets anyway to flesh out the air wings when the F-35 turns out to be too expensive.
@kdraper2007 That's funny because I remember watching the PBS special on it and Boeing's guys thought it would be a good idea to go on strike right in the middle of the competition, in addition to the fact that their design did not perform as well on VTOL as the F-35. The Navy is currently deciding where to base four fully operational Marine F-35 squadrons and two training squadrons.
this was cancelled right ?
