It is dangerous, but probably the safest way to end the incident; tazers would be a better alternative nowadays.

I doubt police have training or practice in how to drive into people, which explains some of the dangerous parts. For example, not stopping after hitting him the first time, and hitting him so close to an object he could be crushed against (the pole possibly could break a few of his bones, but I am no expert).

Nonetheless, it looks like it was the best way to end the situation.
