I really appreciate this lesson, Banjo Ben! You're one of my fave guitar teachers! My other favourite is the late Buster B. Jones. I'm just a humble Limey, but I really dig bluegrass and suchlike.
ben - just stumbled acroost yer vidjuhs. THANKS! finally some pickin videos that are fun to watch an informative. KILLER job man. Sounds great pick it HAWT SONNNNN!!!! Ima go check the others and the website.
Excellent lesson Ben. I really love to see you go into such great detail about your thought process in creating solos. It is great to see what you look for in a song to see how you plan where you will attack and some different examples of how these sections can be improvised. I love your lessons and always look forward to the next one coming out. Keep up the great work!
Teaching for the sole altruistic purpose of proliferating the human understanding of music. This man's efforts and initiative are extraordinarily admirable and generous. Every musician should follow his example.
The greatness of Music as an artistic medium has been diminished by its' contemporary decent into simplicity. No body other body knowledge is so endangered. Musical ignorance has festered into the scourge of the modern word.
What you do is benevolent and magnanimous. Thank you sir
Ben, could you do a video where you slow down 09:23-10:00? I'm not talking about breaking it down a whole lot, but just play it slowly so I can see and hear all the notes. I can probably piece the whole thing together by watching the rest of the video, but it would be nice just to watch and listen to it slowly all in one take.

YOU ARE INSPIRING ME...I WAS PARALYZED IN MY HANDS LAST YEAR...NOW I AM ALMOST 100% HEALED , I AM EXCITED TO BE LEARNING AGAIN!...thank you for teaching us!
Howdy! I prefer Elixir mediums on everything they make them for...guitar, banjo, and mandolin. They may be expensive, but they'll last you twice as long, and they really increase your playability. Hope that helps! Gig 'em!!
@BanjoBen1 I agree their isn't any strings any better than elixirs, the sound, life and action from them are awesome! do you use the nano or poly web?
@BanjoBen1 Hey Ben, have you tried DR strings? Just wondering. I have been using them for years, and find they hold their tone brightness a LONG time. In fact, so long, that I usually just change them, because of the time factor, no kidding. I have a set of DR 10's on my '72 Gibson SJ Deluxe, that I play almost every day around the house, they have been on there for months, have used other strings, too, GHS, Martin, Pearce, and others. All of those, are great... while they are fresh.
Thank you! This hits me right where I am right now. Been studying where I am in the song; chord progression, where the melody is within those chords, where those chords and melodies can be played on the fretboard, and now this gives me what I needed to begin to think through flavoring the tune my way. Now, I'm able to develop my style, not just copying someone else's. I can't thank you enough. Keep pickin', and keep the faith. Thanks, again. Jimmy in East Tennessee
String pickin bug man! LOL Its neat to see your videos and remember back a year or so ago how much you have changed in appearance. LOL I wish I could play! Lovem keep em coming! Steve
Way-to-go Ben! not only great pickin, but your simplification of "variations on a theme" thinking makes arrangements easy for everyone. I am going to apply it to my mandolin playin. And yes, some of my best licks have come out of mistakes! This is one of your best yet!!! PS I like the D'Addario 60+ best on the Gibson so far! ciao
@PlaceOfOrigin Thanks so much!! I agree!!! It's a Taylor Custom DN, and I can't say enough good things about it. I've recorded master sessions in the studio here in Nashville with it, and it's the most well rounded guitar I've ever played on tape. The Custom DN's are tough to find, but they're worth every penny!!!
Man, I am NOWHERE near advanced enough for 99% of the lessons you post, but I am hopelessly addicted. Still grinding on the GLIck vids but you are still giving me something to shoot for. Thanks for what you do.
Could not go without thanking you for this lesson. Really great stuff and absolutely pertinent for the next step from tab to personalizing a tune. You're right, Tony is the master at doing this. And you're also right that we can add our own stuff to it. I think I'm ready for this. Tackling it head on!
This is great. Thank you! I never know how the heck to approach a solo so I usually freak. Being a singer and songwriter, it doesn't really matter if I can set the fretboard on fire but wouldn't it be fun? The Tony Rice approach works for songwriting as well. You lead your audience down a certain track and they think they know where you going and then you surprise them with something unexpected. Thanks!
Awesome Ben! I struggle with just the basic version of this song. LOL (G-Lick) Thanks for all your time and postings. I think we are truly blessed to have a banjoBen.
good lesson I do it on whiskey before breakfast and people say is that Norman Blake style I say no its my muttled way of playing it untill a friend showed me note for note that is pretty close to how Norman Blake playes it as well
so ya even when we dont know how to play something it just goes to show it can still come out great
I am off to apply your video to Red Hair Boy and thanks for the post look forward to more from you
