By the way, don't use the M17s. Their porkchop filters have chromium VI salts.

looks just like the one we used in the corps in the 80's. try to get some flutters. they look like little white rubber circles but very important. running in one was hell. roll the protective hood up so it can be rolled down once you put it on and make a complete seal. the mask should be looking right at you when you open the carry bag. there should be a plastic bag in the back pouch of the carrier bag. inside i think their was a puch for lense and stuff. enjoy

The M17 was made of butyl rubber. I wonder why they decided to try silicone with the MCU2P and M40 and then found it not protective against chemical warfare. So then they got rid of the MCU and put a butyl rubber skin over the M40 before finally using butyl rubber with the M50.

@FortitudeOfHeaven Good observation. I have no clue, but I can imagine that comfort was a serious factor. Silicon is much more flexible, and it doesn't chafe on the face so much.Plus, I think silicon makes it more airtight. The m17 didn't even have the inner flap thing, so a good seal must have been their focus.

@XxskidudekidxX you pay for what you get. There are large differences between different masks (not even including the collectors value of certain models). Lense sizes and shapes are big ones. I'll never use small, circular civilian lenses. Also, the quality of the voice diaphragm and drinking apparatus is relatively important. Whether it has a hood... and how readily available the hood is... what kind of maintenance items come with it... and how old it is.

you can only take off the external lenses, but theres a rubber coating around the lenses that you just peel off,

@MutilatedCat i mean there's literally the lenses attached to the mask, and then there's an extra set that goes over the ones attached to the mask its self, and the m10m is the basically same thing as the m17 but its just made by the czech's and there are some subtle variations, i hope this answers your question :/

I got mine from the millitary for free! And FYI those are not filters there attachment sections for the external filter.

Good review, acually picked one of these up recently and have been figuring it out. You are totally right about taking the filter covers and the hood off. I took the hood off and with some effort got it back on. The covers have been removed once and that was a accident that happened while removing the cover. You did forget to touch on the voice amplifyer however (vent in front next to liquid tube). Good review.

I have an M17 gas mask. My father picked it up in Jordan when he had to leave Lebanon cause of the civil war there. The hospitals had a surplus of M-17 Gas masks from the Jordanian civil war and my father picked one up. It has been stowed away in a closet for about a decade so I got it out and took a look at it It works perfectly It doesn't have a hood to it like yours everything visible is black rubber. What do you think something like mine would sell for? (I am not gunna sell it just curious)

wow thats a pretty awesome story, if its like mine with the rubber drinking tube it should run anywhere from $40-$60, if its in perfect condition (nice clean clear lenses, no scratches, nothings broken) then it COULD go for like $70-$80

yes it will filter out whatever you don't want to breath in as long as theres a seal around your face, other than that it just might be a little uncomfortable

well the filters can be used once or twice. i wouldn't wear this for a long time in a toxic environment.

Ive used this mask when in a protest and they used tear gas because a riot broke out so i flipped this mask on and i got the hell out of there. i was only exposed for a short bit of time, maybe a little over a minuet and i didn't feel anything. (yes i did change the filters after words)

and the hood wont save you from anything major, its mostly to keep the smoke, out and your head dry.

I've always wondered what the designers of this mask were thinking... Changing filters is impossible in battle, and you can't change used filters without contaminating the mask... pretty useless, if you ask me... funny they even copied this design with the m10-series :-)

the last filters were made in 1992 and the mask itself was phased out in national gurad and reserve units in 1998. as long as the filters are intact they shouldnt harm you but I would reccomend that you toss loose filters that arent sealed

oh my god , i got a czeck m10 gas mask .(similar to this one) and i got a hood with it too. It is impossible to get on!! How did you get yours on. Note- czeck m10 gas mask looks almost exactly like yours.
