As much as Phil Collins and Eric Clapton were in the band, this wasn't actually an Eric Clapton show. Picnic By The Lake was an all-star concert and the house band also featured Mike Rutherford, hence the presence of the song in the setlist. The line-up featured, among others, Steve Winwood, Gary Brooker, and Henry Spinetti on drums on this song. Phil also played drums when he wasn't singing.
Most of the fans must've lost their minds when the band played this song. Ironically, when I first heard Mike & the Mechanics ("Silent Running"), I thought it was Phil Collins (or Genesis). That just makes this recording that much better to me. It shows the regard Phil (and Eric Clapton) felt for Mike Rutherford's work.
Only thing, wasn't Behind the Sun from 1984? Or, have I got that wrong?
@CircleCityEric I think Behind The Sun (85) and August (86). Phil has joked about that he likes Mike & The Mechanics. i don't know whether that's true or not.
I always thought this would be an awesome song for Phil to do but i really don't like it :( If he would slow it down a bit it would be a lot better, this version is too stressy.
sounds like saucepans rattling in the background! give me mikw and the mechanics ANY day..sorry Phil, 2 out of 10

Remember the song American Pie? Well, Dec 31, 1989 was "the day the music died" as music started to suck after that.

Can you get this show on CD or DVD anywhere. I would love to be able to see/hear the other performances.

Just great. Paul Young & Paul Carrack were just very good substitutes for Phil!

They started it too fast and speeded it up even further. Not typical of the Phil Collins I love. Leave it with Mike & The Mech.

Wow! Cool - I wonder why they did this.... EC can't keep track of the key - it's funny, his lines ending all ugly!

I always imagined this song being perfect for Phil, which is probably true of every Mike and the Mechanics song.

I never thought of that, but then I imagined him singing The Living Years and realized you're right. I have no idea which I'd like better.
