good tounguing, you are having that much problems with your valves, cause apart from being unoiled you are missing the correct technique.you are pressing them with too much finger surface, you want to just use the tips of your fingers so your can press the valves just vertically. nevertheless its a great effort! way to go!

(by the way, i agree 100% with lyro, there's no such thing as a "bad horn", though i think you'll get the best results outta your own horn and mouthpiece)

If you keep playing like that, then you will bend your valves. And you need to play the upper part :P All horns are good horns, you just need to be the best you can playing it. I've played for 6 years now, and never had a "bad" horn. make sure the valves are oiled, and slides greeased, and you will do fine.

"horn" is quite often used as a general term for any brass instrument. yes, i realize that that is TECHNICALLY wrong, but i assume that he means a good trumpet, not a french horn. also, to the guy playing the trumpet, press the valves with the tips of your fingers in a vertical motion. the way you're playing will eventually damage the valves.

try holding your hand up like youre playing a trumpet and move your fingers down like youre pressing a valve, only keep them straight. see how its like a curved path? now do the same so that your fingers are curved (in a way that would resemble placing the tips of your fingers directly over the valve). see? its a completely vertical motion. hope that helped :)
