Hedgehogs are related to Moonrats (not true rats- not even rodents) and tenerecs. Hedgehogs can't detach their quills and are MUCH smaller than most porcupine species. They also have a very different face from porcupines (porcupines are rodents, so they have elongated incisors; hedgehogs have small sharp teeth to eat small animals, such as insects and lizards).
@JennyDragon A have a friend who pet sits for people... and while she was keeing a hedgie, it was running in a wheel and its back foot got hung and tore the leg out of the socket. That is so important to get a proper wheel.

Please understand Wild Hedgehogs & Domesticated Hedgehogs are two different species. Domesticated hogs are hybrids and smaller than European hogs (hence "pigmy"). Unlike the wild hogs, African Pigmy Hedgies cannot hibernate because if they do, they will die. Also it has been proven that MOST domesticated hogs enjoy the water. :) I hope this has helped you understand a little more. Also, I agree with you: Boo to those who cannot take care of their animal friends.

its not okay to hae a hedgehog at home, beacause he is not awake when the sun shines or someone is loud. please don´t put him into water... they cannot good swim and would be fear..they only wake at night...
Just so you know, she was not a pet to me. I know it may sound odd that I was able to be so close to such a small animal but I was. She was like a child to me and I would give up more than you would know just for her to be with me again. All I ever cared about was her being happy and treated like the little angel she was. I would appreciate it if you kept your hate for someone who deserved it.
When we had our little hedgie, we couldn't find a proper wheel, so we took a ferret wheel with wire bars going across and wove lawn chair strap material into it so she wouldn't hurt herself. It was not the easiest to clean, but it worked. We should have attached an electric generator to it, she ran so much on it.
Your hedgie looks really happy :) and healthy,but a plastic solid wheel is a lot safer because he can't get his quills or feet stuck in the wire,, keep up the good work with your little baby :)

I wouldn't talk buddy. Everyone told me to get the Silent Spinner because it would be safer, when in fact the thing broke in about 2months. The wheel flew off the base to the other side of the cage and caused serious injury to my hedgies leg. So now because the pet stores around here either carry Silent Spinner or wire ones, my hedgie has no wheel at all anymore. I keep telling pet stores that the Silent Spinner is more dangerous than the wire ones, but they don't care.
My hedgehog has a wire wheel like this one, but I line it with craft foam to create a flat surface. He runs for hours every night. He's never had any problems with it.
She is sooo cute!!!! My hedgehog's name is PeeWee also, but we call him funny names sometimes....not to be mean though. Some names are: Widdle, Senior Handsome Quill, Beast, Prickle Head, Mr. P.W. and others.

You want to watch out for those kinds of wheels. They can severely injure a hedgehog, especially if it gets caught and suffocates the leg.
