Ahh my great grandfather...my Aunt Gina (his daughter) had an album called Everything I have is Yours- and believe me the talent was passed on to her.
this sort of balladeering by mr. E was the real deal back in the day. Dad, I hear your voice in this song - you picked a great singer to emulate!!! When the song told a story that wrapped you up from the first note to the last and left you with wet eyes - even all these years later!
Ohhh, that cultured voice, those tailored 'Mr. B' suits and 'rolled' collars - I owned two suits myself. He was so very special to my generation and there'll never be another to take his place. Music reflects each generation and the present music reflects very little culturally or musically. Rap? Poems over rhythm, nothing more.
When I was a kid and didn't know any better, I used to think that Mr. B and Lena Horne were brother and sister: the copper color, great teeth, and chiseled features.
his sister were very light skinned and appeared white. When buses were seggrogated they use to sit up front and when asked if Billy was their brother they would deny him.
Had my dream of becoming involved in some form of production (alas I was born too early in history), what Halle Berry did for Dorothy Dandridge, I wanted Ice T to do for Mr. B. There is some resemblance there especially absent the out of fashion pony tail!
@ccaammiiittoo1 Ice T portraying Billy Eckstine??? I'm sorry but that thought just doesn't make it for me. However, there was a fellow a few years back who had the voice and the looks. Larry Graham who sang "One In A Million You".
@kweju3 Thanks for your comment. But I think I'll stick with Ice. It's a fit all the way. And apparently some members of his family whom I've chatted with online see the possibility.
@ccaammiiittoo1 Really? Ice T? Hmmmm. Wouldn't he have to LIP SYNCH every single note? Maybe the part could be shared by two guys; one for the young Billy and one for the mature? But the question remains, WHO can sing like that these days? Long shot maybe John Legend?
@MsJollycholly Thanks for your response. Here's mine to yours. Mr. B and Ice share the same "creoleness," meaning fair complexion and even the "cultural hipness" and self assuredness. Yes, by all means, lip sync, for lo, no one can approach that magnificent baritone, not even his contemporary Arthur Prysock, another "creole." Yes, two Mr. Bs, one young and one mature. But the lip sync must carry. Legend is not an option! Still, I just want to thank you, baby, for your response!
@dlampo11 And that's not all, dlampo11. You should've seen him on screen. The moguls did with Mr. B what they did with Lena Horne, filmed both in very show stopping cameos. But since she was better known in Hollywood, Horne often got above the marquee billing, along with other stars which Mr. B didn't enjoy. Both Mr. B and Lena were stunningly attractive figures on screen, and the technicolor only highlighted their great complexions and stunning beauty. Visually, he was something to see.
I have his CD with this song on it. I used to play it many times, when I would go for my three mile walk in the Tahoe Park Neighborhood in Sacramento, California.
Such a little " dream song".. Mr B gets it so right
