Really trying to find more of this footage , my stepdad is Mick 'Bonkey' Bowers who raced along side lampkin, smith, bickers etc... Anyone know where to get any archive footage ?
Wonderful. Bickers, Smith, Eastwood, Horsfield, Lampkin... I remember those BBC broadcasts with great affection. And, those bikes sound like motor bikes should sound.
as anybody got any vids,or perhaps know where i could see some vids of scrambling at brill, muswell hill, buckinghamshire,in the 60s onwards,as i used to live there+ would watch scrambles from the age of 5 upwards,as i was lucky enough to be living there untill the scrambles were stopped, because a change of land owner, who stopped them, you know who you are, grrrrrr
Watching the Monaco Grand Prix this morning I was thinking about Murray Walker. I miss him doing F1 (and F1 Playstation and X Box games). Here's Murray doing motorcycle scrambles coverage from the '60s. No Armco in the country, though. These guys were manly men, by the way.
I used to be a member of a m c a, used to meet at talk pits working mens club, there used to be a track at bignall end when i was very young ,and there was also a track for a while at brock wood hill audley.
thanks for this post, yes i remember this track rode their many times Bowsey !Wood Farm. Crewe and South Cheshire MCC .The track at Madeley was run by the Potters MCC
Brilliant clip! They certainly were household names and I loved watching scrambling as a small boy in the 60s. Vic Eastwood is still one of my heroes and that was a spectacular fall by him!
I love my Greeves, but isn't it great to see and hear the old four-strokes? I think I was born about five years too late. Thanks for posting this one!!!!
Bengt Aberg still rides modern mx-bikes for fun, test-rode 400 HVA type he won 2 w/champs on (no suspension) "How did we ride these things!!!" But they did, and fast. The old riders, if physically up to it, racing a modern bike, would smoke modern riders. Tough heads, tough bodies. 2x45 min + 2 lap motos on tougher tracks than today, on bikes no modern rider could ride, they were VERY technical riders. Also spannered own bikes, drove van all over Europe, no 'designer' works teams as support.
Great video. Didn't get interested in off-road racing until the mid '70s, so I remember Jeff Smith as an older guy on Can-Ams. It's great to see him here in his prime.
I rode MX in the late '70's on a Honda CR250 Red Rocket. That bike was quick , would hole shot against almost anything !! Handling not so good though ! Went to a few British MX GP meets at Hawkstone Park , most impressive were the works CCM's , 3 speed boxes and mad fast !! I just gasped in amazement at the speed of Bob Wright & John Banks ! By the way , Dave Bickers now runs a company that sets up car & bike stunts for movies. Feel like getting a twin shock dirt bike now !!
if todays riders and bikes were in with these then yes.....but if these riders were in modern times on equal machinery there wouldnt be much in it...a top rider in their prime then..would not be a lot different to a top rider today....
So a modern fuel-injected, liquid cooled bike with 2x the power 3x the suspension and about half the weight will do better than it's 45 year old carburated, air cooled counterpart?
I would love to see a modern supercross rider hop on an old thumper and try to compete against these guys tho :) Probably get their ass handed to them.
Hi Rob,I raced in the early sixties in New England the east coast of the USA,I rode a 250 Dot with the Villiers motor and Alpha racing bottom end,It was a tough bike and not that light which was good frame strength was very important then and being in shape came from constantly riding in scrambles and practice sessions,I also rode BSA,Triumph Cub ,The mighty 250 Bultaco Pursang Mettisse,I started racing when I was 13 on the 250 Dot
this is what i do it seems to work right click on the video screen and it says download this video to realplayer left click on this should d load .open r player find video open it play it good luck essex local
fabulous to see and hear these forerunners of todays motocross. i was a very young lad when scrambling was a regular televised sport and i've loved it ever since. can still smell castrol r 40 mmm...

It interesting there none of the gouging and running over each others wheels or the first turn fights going on. Were the regs better, or the people.

What a crackin clip!
The riders were all household names in the 60s due to the coverage on Sat afternoons.
For some reason they stopped televising it.
Scrambling became MotoX ,the bikes became more freakish and less like roadbikes and now it's almost an unknown sport.

Scary move by Bickers on the last corner. Jeff Smith seems to have taken it on the chin tho... : )

Todays riders would not be able to pull the clutch lever in on these bikes.Plus they could not ride without disc brakes (limp wristed)

this video is awesome! really captures the spirit of the new book just published by Veloce Publishing - Off-Road Giants - Heroes of 1960s Motorsport.

The best bit is they still look fast.
You've got to laugh at people nowadays that moan if bikes are a gram to heavy, not enough travel on the suspension etc etc :o)
Guess people were just harder then. I was only just born mind but my Dad raced back then and in the 50's.
Brilliant vid.
