Only supposedly sad, hairy bikers were into great Rock like Zep, Rush & Deep Purple. The rest sort of fell between Bowie & Punx who were interchangeable & that small group was made up of mostly working class young males.
It was only when the band went a bit commercial in the 80's that *some* more people listened.
