This man is the greatest male singer of all time. I am fully prepared to consent to the fact that he has some stiff competition from the likes of Gigli, Bjorling, the 3 Tenors, Tauber, Bergonzi, Di Stefano & Del Monaco, but I just don't think any of them can really compare to him.
This is one they borrowed for the movie Fitzcarraldo. Unforgettable seeing them chug up the Amazon with this tune on the grammophone, and hearing the menacing tribal drumbeats come to a halt. The voice that could literally "soothe the savage breast".
No, I think that was in 1912. There were two recordings of Bella Figlia dell'amore on the same day - the quartet with Amelita Galli-Curci (soprano), Flora Perini (mezzo-soprano) and Giuseppe De luca and then this one only of the tenor voice (which was never published on 78rpm).
According to website victor(.)library(.)ucsb(.)edu, which know has completed the whole Victor discography until April 1921, dates this recording to January 12, 1916.

If he lived 10 or 20 more years, we would be lucky to have a better recording that can capture his voice better.

@martythetickler: agree with you. The velvet voice of Caruso had an empathetic quality that is very hard to beat.

Wasn't this the version with Tetrazzini? The one of two recordings?
