There is only one true master of the volume knob, and that is Jeff Beck. Everything you ever wanted to know about pulling a note out of thin air has been done by him.
This technique can sound very much like a violin. Do a YouTube search on Focus-Eruption (1971) Part 1 and listen to how Jan Akkerman gets a sound that to me is cross between a violin and trumpet.
dude u do not knw what guitar is for..it is not for makin such horrible, suckin noises...u need to learn a lot more..u r an asshole..seems u r playin it for the first time...
this DOES sound like a violin dumbasses! I been playing the violin since I was 5 and guitar since I was 15 and while this is not masterful technique, it does sound like a violin. Again, not amazingly done but better than you punks can prolly do and better than I can do.
@ShayCarlFan1000 Thanks! not trolling though. I really did play that long. Still have it too but only play guitar. And I never said this guy was great. Just that it does sound like a violin if you have any imagination at all and can get pretend you are not looking at a guitar. Hell, play it to a non-guitarist without letting them look and see what they say. They defilly will not say guitar. Dude needs practice though. :)
LISTEN EVERYONE. I'M WRITING IN CAPS TO GET YOUR ATTENTION AND BECAUSE I ENJOY IT. TO GET THE BEST EXAMPLE OF THIS TECHNIQUE, WATCH "VENICE QUEEN LIVE AT SLANE CASTLE - RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS" FRUSCIANTE IS THE MAN!
Yup, they're called volume swells. The Beatles used this technique in Yes It Is (while I think they used a volume pedal in I Need You to the same effect). In recent years the technique was championed by Jeff Beck. See for example his rendition of Over the Rainbow.
sooo you play the note while you lower the volume and than before you pick the other note you return the volume all the way up and repeat??? tell me if im right. and i dont have a delay pedal, but how does the delay pedal kick in???
@SalemStyx a violin CAN sound like this, you can definitely picture a violin producing this sound. Is this all a violin can sound like? NO. But none the less does this sound like one? YES!
ok... so you can tool with the "Xanadu" song by "Rush" and you use the same effects they do... and to you it sounds kinda "violin- like"... cool... you need work on giving an accurate description of your videos though... I stumbled onto this page because I was trying to find a way to make my guitar sound like a violin.
Behringer makes a slow motion pedal modeled from the old 80's boss slow gear gear and it's like 25.00 on e-bay then you don't have to wear out your volume pots, but good video otherwise, just thought that might make things easier for ya.
@jackthrift This technique is widely used in particular kinds of music such as psychedelic rock. I agree, however, that this is not the best video of it out there, it's very old, but I can't be bothered to make a new one..
The technique for achieving this effect is quite visible and clear, and I think that's what this gentleman was trying to get across. All these negative comments were unnecessary and uncalled for. What would you lose by appreciating his efforts, or just moving on to whatever else you were looking for on YouTube? We would all be better people if we refrained from expressing negative thoughts and feelings. Just a small idea which is really not small at all, if you think about it.
@edoardoruggeri1 i know im not eric johnson im just saying it sounds bad dude.... what you cant agree like your just playing random notes and your distortion sounds horrible not that distortion sounds good i prefer a smooth overdrive, but im not trying to be a dick but... c'mon you cant agree
@jamesmanortiz *facepalm* First you tell him he sounds shitty, and then you say you're not trying to be a dick? Lol, people say the weirdest things on the internet.
@chaz9123 Wow, you guys are still taking my old comment up the ass, why would i post a video of me doing the violin effect? And second of all i dont have a camera, and i'm not going to go out and buy one. Like i said listen to Eric, or Steve Howe do it and there's your example.
@blurginouliz You don't need the delay to do it, it just gives a nicer and wider sound. You can of course do it just with the volume knob, like I showed here
@uTubeChangedMyLife Look, if you can't understand how to do it by watching this video, then I'm sorry for you, you have no spirit of observation and a minimum of analysis capabilities.
@edoardoruggeri1 But then it's just a video, and not a how to video. A how to means you show them, you know... how to. This is a watch it and hope it's easy enough to pick up video... It's cool, I'm with you on that, but it's not actually how-to. it's just labeled wrong is all.
@uTubeChangedMyLife It's done by turning the guitar volume knob all the way off, then you hit the note your after and roll the volume on. By doing this you eliminate the pick 'attack' sound, and create a smooth 'bowing' sound. It sounds a lot better if you use a delay pedal to play every second note. Check out Yngwie Malmsteen ECHO ETUDE, or almost any of his live solos, for a far more convincing version than this pissy version.
Why is everyone trying to light him on fire!? and for those people who want a HOW TO, just WATCH him! Look what he's doing with his volume knob. How hard is it to figure it out?
It is harder if you actually pick the notes, tapping works pretty well. That way you can cleanly hit all the notes. A volume pedal would probably work great.
