Dubstep is defined by certain elements in the music, not by opinion.

Distance didn't base anything on any one band, he has a lot of bands & genres as influences, in one interview he even said he use to be in a metal band. If you've ever watched him on GetDarkerTV they always chat about him starting off in a local metal band & then shifting to dubstep. Me personally wouldn't compare Distance to Skrillex, or even relate them, completely different sound.

One was invented in 1960s Jamaica as instrumental reggae b-sides and the other was invented in London in the early 2000s as an darker offshoot of garage. Dubstep merely takes inspiration from dub. So no, it isn't the same as different kinds of hardcore.
