  • I'm a great believer that the artist that makes the song a hit is the best but here Ruthie has it all over Liza Minelli. She is simply fantastic!!

  • i mean it was low but it was definitely amazing. still, you can't beat liza in my opinion ha!

  • @suttonfosteristhebes SUTTON FOSTER is incredible, indeed. INCREDIBLY OVERRATED! She has a squeaky voice, mediocre dancing sills, and hammy acting. Ruthie is better and is prettier!

  • @suttonfosteristhebes Have you actually seen Sutton Foster perform? She's okay, but she's NOT great at all! Check out her videos on Youtube and you'll see how lackluster and overrated she is -- and everyone says so.

  • What a voice!

  • wow, just fantastic...can't stop watching! thanks very much for posting.

  • OKAY...my favorite version EVER

  • I can't remember how I managed to come across this a few years ago but still love coming back to it every now and then. Primary love metal, but vocal performances like this are amazing. And damn, so beautiful also.

  • I am obsessed with people saying no one other than the west end theatre crowd knows her...I live in a tiny town in WV and know and love this woman's voice and work. Since pre-les Miz!!!

  • @vinceinelkins I live in Verona (Italy) and I totally love her as well <3

  • maybe the best singing performance i have ever come across.....ruthie is fabulous!!!!!!...i've played this video 30 times and will play it probably 100 times more(if not more).....thank you ruthie !!!!!!!!!

  • Beautiful woman with a wonderful and powerful voice! Brava again Ruthie!

  • WORLD NOT KNOW BEST. IT IS FANTASTIC. IT IS NICE VOICE. BEST BEST BEST BEST BEST. RUSSIA LOVE YOU NICE WOMAN

  • @NEDELSKIY1957 Кто-то еще из России)

  • 43 people are losers

  • AMAZING!! She's so good! Dare I say it, but I like her version better than Kristin Chenoweth's on Glee. That's saying a lot! So much passion here!

  • you don't need to say she is a "domestic starlet" and "careerless has-been" because she's good anyway. also these words sound very rude and hurt henshall fan's feeling. it's basic manner. netiquette, please?

  • Actually, she IS a "domestic starlet" (no one knows her outside of the West End's theater-going community) and a "careerless has-been" (she should take ANY offer that comes her way, so she has work...)

  • @jgardell I'm an American who has never been to England. Thus, I am certainly not part of the "West End's theater-going community," and I not only know who she is, but like her! Lots of people will be familiar with her from her Les Mis performances. And so what if she isn't focused on an international career, and most of her fans are local? That holds true for many fine singers throughout the world.

  • @jgardell I'm from Russia! And i know and ADORE her. Ruthie is the Queen!

  • She's so beautiful...

  • dang!!!!!!! what a fabulous voice!!!!!! she's terrific

  • "Maybe Next Time" Those 40 People Will Hit The Right Button...

  • I love this song but I like to think about the lottery when I hear it. Especially with words like "odds" and "winner."

  • I adore this woman <3

  • absolutely stunning voice...thank God there are still singers like her...irreplaceable!

  • My word, but that was phenomenal.

  • A very overrated performer.

  • Throaty, scratchy voice.

  • Amazing. Just...amazing. This is how you bring a classic to life :) This is my first time hearing her sing and im in awe.

  • @RoniePryor I know, isn't she amazing? Any time someone mentions Subo to me, I say nothing and send them to Ruthie's "I Dreamed a Dream." Either you get it or you don't.

  • Gave me goosebumps

  • absolutely fantastic!!

  • love this song. love Ruthie. Didn't know she sang it anywhere.

  • @archieanders And you are a major star on Broadway???? That's funny.

  • @archieanders You are such a troll. Must you post the phrases "domestic starlet" and "careerless has-been" on every Ruthie Henshall video? If you don't like her, don't watch videos of her!

  • I love the sing-a-long red button at the top of the screen - like anyone else could even begin to sing this like Ruthie!

  • WOW she has a gorgeous voice although I do like this song sung a little more up beat. But the end part is amazing!

  • An old song made new again....every time that I hear her sing it....

  • I am inlove. and im not even a man.

  • Wow, oh my God. Fantastic!

  • Nice ass too

  • I was lucky enough to meet and talk with Ruthie. She is gracious and beautiful. Such an amazing voice and the way she expresses the emotion of a song is second to none xxx

  • I was lucky enough to see Ruthie Henshall in Chicago with Ute Lemper and decided then that she was a truly great singer. ... and this is one of my favourite songs, so a devastating combination! Wonderful.

  • shes got a really diverse range too, cos when she was in les mis, her voice was so different x

  • Amazing. She is so real!

  • she's better than Streisand

  • can't choose between liza or ruthie, both have such emotion... amazing

  • I'm stunned.

  • Incredible, no words.

  • Simply spectacular!

  • Seriously 100,000 of the views of this video are mine and even now she is simply a-freaking-mazing. I never, ever thought I would say someone does it better than Liza, but Ms. Henshall has proved me wrong. Simply stunning.

  • She is wonderful. come visit my page if you love this music.

  • im in love with her

  • What a singer. What a voice. But Jazz/Blues isnt Ruthie's thing . Her passion is too contrived. Its not believeable. Billie Holliday, Judy Garland, her daughter Liza. They sang this style of song like they lived it.

  • Ruthie's vocals are second to none. The fact that she can outperform any and all with just ONE take, truly shows the caliber of this magnificent singer. So much passion, so much emotion, and so much raw vocal power and control.

    She is the absolute best.

  • @kafeifei Like I said, I am a professional musician, so I believe I know what I am talking about. Yes, we do have rules. Just because some deviate from them doesn't mean they don't exist.

  • I am an artist, and also a professional musician. Yes, we do have rules.

  • @haygoodartgirl You don't have rules at all. If you choose to stick to a style or medium it's your choice. But there aren't rules.

  • Her voice is lovely, but she spreads her vowels. First rule for professional singers is not to do that.

  • @haygoodartgirl Professional singers don't have rules. It is art.

  • @Kafeifei Yes, we have rules. The first thing any choir teacher or musical intructer will put in your head is to round your vowels. We perform for our love of the art, but we have to perform in a way the audience understands, thus the rules.

  • @WildChildKCW I put it to you that they give you an idea of how to do something. Not rules. Imagining that all singing at any level has to conform to those ideals is bad. And to try and envoke the audience as though a part of art is silly. To say the least.

  • @haygoodartgirl Not for this kind of singing, not for jazz. I know what you mean but words and expression are more important here and she is amazing. You must be young or obsessed with Mozart. :-)

  • @haygoodartgirl Just because you're a professional musician doesn't mean what you say or what works for you it the same for everyone else. A golden rule of vocal training is alcohol shrinks your chords so avoid it before a show but several singers have a brandy before they go on stage. There are guide lines , they work for some , not for all , and they aren't rules. Music is subjective , it's about personal taste and opinion not people thinking they're high and mighty like yourself dictating.

  • @haygoodartgirl I think you mean she has poor diction.

  • she is fantastic.so much emotions feelings,i love her the way she sings. The best.

  • Meh. Too square. Too pretty-pretty. Nice voice, no guts.

  • @Goomgam You can stick Meh up your arse, jackwagon.

  • @Goomgam She puts more guts into her song than anyone else around... just watch her face...

  • @candycaneify I am agree with you her face is amaizing, and her voice is the best.

  • Amazing voice!!

  • wonderful woman, wonderful voice

  • Beautiful voice, but she is lacking a little requisite heft in places...HOWEVER, I don't think it is entirely her fault. The arrangement is LOUSY! Great voice though!

  • WHAT A VOICE! AMAZING!

  • I agree that Liza captures the emotions of the song better, but there's no denying what a breathtaking singer she is. I could listen to her sing one note for the rest of my life and still never get enough.

  • I don't like this one. Liza captured the emotion in the song. This version is a little too lamenting and not determined enough

  • Surpasses Cheno by miles. The only one who might be able to top this is Liza herself, but even that's debatable

  • she's so amazing. gosh i love her.. so inspiring :)

  • WOW!

  • love the last win especiallyy

  • She is amazing.

  • You see, I've seen her live twice, and she was utterly terrible both times...but that was awesome!

  • omgsh!! :D gorgeous woman, beautiful performance, and such a voice!! I love her!

    Sunday 31 October 2010

  • if he dont stay giz a bell il stay all night

  • this is still my top favorite video on youtube and there's no sign of that changing any time soon!

  • Damn Ruthie - didn't you consider someone else may want to sing this song again sometime? You could have left a little room at the top (but thanks for this anyway - PERFECT!).

Saw you years ago in Le Miz - same result! You are one beautiful and talented lady.

  • she is incredibly fit. nomnomnomnomnom

  • nobody can do it liza, not even her....lizas emotion while singing it are just unreachable and that is what makes her just the best,,,,but i like this too

  • Beautiful lady, awesone voice (operatic too!), great dancer...don't you just hate some people! LOL

First saw Ruthie as an 18 year old in Cats! She's also an acrobat!

  • well hasnt she got a pair of lungs on her!!

  • ive never heard this version i like it alot. but i also love the Glee version alot too.

  • amazing

  • Ruthie Henshall is the greatest singer/actress who has ever graced the Westend and Broadway!! AMAZING :D XX

  • That was amazing! I think she kind of looks like Mary-Louise Parker. lol

  • well she could of put some effort in he he only jokin that was fukin awsome

  • I do not understand the 20 people who do not like this.

  • she nailed it - nothing more to be said

  • love the buildup

  • @xlefreakcestchic - A M A Z I N G !! Met her backstage before the show and she's as wonderful off stage as on it. A beautiful, genuine lady with phenomenal talent.

  • It's not just her singing that brings down the house. It's the fully invested emotion she expresses along with it.

  • She's so classy... she looks and sounds like she belongs at least 6 decades ago. Her voice and look are so classic

  • wow. amazing!

    RUTHIE HENSHALL

    Sounds of Hollywood

    Sunday 31 October 2010

  • @glenn20081965 Im going t see her in liverpool however i dont think she selling that way...some promo needs doing

  • super!!

  • what's wrong with her face when she sings? and i don't think she's all that good.

  • She is a gifted woman, she is so beatiful and with an AMAZING AND FLAWLESS voice God her voice is so strong and beatiful go girl you are the best

  • SHE WAS FANTINE IN "LES MISERABLES 10TH ANIVERSARY"!!!!! gosh! I love her voice!

  • screw idina menzel! this woman is where it's at!!

  • Wasn't she in Putting It Together??

  • @kerlie90 - Yes.

  • @comvic20 Oh cool!! Thanks!! :D

  • Rurthie has a great voice, but isn't animated enough! She needs to move around the stage a little more instead of looking so stiff standing there and realll feel what she is singing instead of just making sure she hits the right notes compared to some others who have sung this song.

  • @bellabecka2You

this is NOT in a musical, so she must not move around :P

  • @Feeluck Actually it's in Cabaret. But I agree, she doesn't need to move around. Her voice and emotions alone make this an amazing performance.

  • @sweetascherrypie596 i meant, this performance is not in a musical ;)

i know that the song is from cabaret

therefore ruthie can interpretate it like she wants

  • @bellabecka2You - what movement would you suggest she make that would make this song better? This song is a very introspective song. The power and passion doesn't come from moving. If this was in the show I could see a spot on a darkened stage. This is great.

  • Great instrument but why does she always clench her jaw and stunt her own voice.

  • @pudgeuncle I think that's how that she controls her voice...she's not stunting it.

  • @harrypotterwicked Since you don't like GLEE and you are all of 21 and know everything, I guess they should cancel the show and burn every print.

  • the 19 people who missed the like button clearly don't know what TALENT is.

  • Incredible Vocal!!!!

  • Ruthie sings the song better, but Liza is Sally.

  • This woman leaves practically everybody behind...

  • @FaultlessFailure She's incredible. In person even more so. I was lucky enough to meet her. She was gracious, friendly and fun. Ah, the memories :-)

  • Ruthie is vocally cleaner than Liza, but Liza was so heartbreaking in her delivery of this song. Ruthie was lacking that pain that Liza brought to this because this was LIza's life song.

  • Phenomenal singer, but please, open your mouth at the beginning and not halfway through it. It's hard to hear.

  • I've never seen a performer put so much emotion into whatever she sings.

  • ruthie definately has more control in her voice, liza just kinda belts everything (looove liza too). but ruthie's my new showtune pet, I love her voice, the emotion in her eyes, she's fantastic =)

  • This woman is so talented!!

  • Beautiful singing and fantastic emotion. I'll admit I prefer the song a little faster, at leaset at the end, as it gives a kind of frantic feel that I think kinds of works with the song. But again, this a beautiful cover!

  • God, this woman is EXCELLENT.....

  • Our Favorite Performance of this Song.....That includes Liza's version too!

Ruthie's talent on certain Songs surpasses the best of the best....This is one of those Songs...This performance ranks right up there with her performance of "Send In The Clowns"....Which we all feel was the best ever of that Song..

    The 4 Romantics

  • 'i'll be home at last...' hello, liza! but she is fantastic.

  • too slow

  • A Wonderful performance.

Now that is some Powerful vocal.

I would think that couldbe up there with Liza Minnelli's

    just great

    *****

  • By far the best best version of this song ever....such control yet so much emotion. I love her facial expression at around 2:27/2:28.

  • she sings like minelli though

  • DAAAAAMMMMMNNNNNNNNN..........

and this is the same woman who sang "i dreamed a dream"??!!?? what talent!!!!!!!!!

  • For those of you who think it was too slow must not appreciate true jazz. And man, I wish I could produce that kind of sound while "not" opening my mouth! Your lips don't have to be gaping for your voice and mouth to be open! Don't judge what you know nothing about! What incredible sound!!!

  • ATTENTION AUSTRALIA & NZ!!! We want Ruthie to come and perform for us down under next year!! It's looking great at the moment but we need YOUR support :) If you like this video, IMAGINE it live?! the most amazing musical experience you may ever have :) Join the facebook group - LET HER KNOW how YOU feel :) "Ruthie Henshall Rocks Australia" xx

  • she gorgeous too

  • open your mouth woman.

  • Genuinely adore Ruthie Henshall <3.

  • Sorry but she REALLY needs to open her mouth and enunciate her words. She has a beautiful voice though.

  • @Luvgurl6

Sorry but watch 2.57 and the remaining of the song again...and tell me where she is doing it wrong.

  • i love ruthie sorry Kristen but this is so much better shives everytime love you ruthie xx

  • Ruthie was probably more technically better but she has watch her pronounication she was mumbling abit. But my god not even comparable to Minelli in terms of emotion.

  • too slow..

  • I love kristin, but the way this song builds and builds and comes to a head... Ruthie is just untouchable I love her.

  • she has an amazing voice, but there is none of the passion that i've heard in other versions

  • I'm speechless.

This is the best performance i've ever seen of this song...

    Im sorry liza..

    Ruthie is way better.

    wow.

    wow.

    wow.

  • She blows Chenoweth out of the water. Just wow.

  • Ruthie Henshall is currently on Broadway (Apr 26- June 13, 2010) as Roxie Hart in "Chicago". Go see here!

  • wow what a voice!

  • Ruthie IS broadway.

  • up kristin Chenoweth

  • Fuck me sorry to swear but wow what a voice

  • Meh. This version simply drags and drags and drags. Great vocals, but it needs to be sped up a tad.

  • she souns soo fuckin good. This is def my fav song from cabaret

  • i like this version but its a different style of liza u cant compare it. this is powerful, that was smooth n calm :)

  • Grandiosa.

  • in love

  • She starrs in Le Mis as Fantine

  • AMAZING!! I'm pretty sure I remember hearing she was also in Les Mis......am I right?

  • she's amazing, her voice is like audible chocolate!

but perhaps this rendition is too wholesome for something so damaged... sort of like how susan boyle missed the point of i dreamed a dream
