We should nick name Beaver Stadium the Death Star, and let the players wear all white instead of the blue jerseys doing the next white out .that would be so cool
While a National Championship run is always amazing, it's not exactly expected of them. We expect our Hawks to go out as a team and every member leave it all on the field every week. If they do that and come up short, no big deal, as long as they try their best. But the reason Iowa fans seem so fickle is because we know what they can do and if we don't feel they are going all out, we let them know. It's called Blue-Collar mentality, you work for what you earn, and you earn what you get.
With the exception of the games @ Bryant-Denny and Kinnick, I hope PSU runs the table this year. Penn State fans are the best - loud, supportive, and gracious in victory and defeat. I only wish Iowa fans (or just about any other fan base, for that matter) could take a page from you guys.
@mdiggs4545 You do not have the horses to run with us in the future. You were lucky with a couple of games but remember we are penn state and you will always be iowa.
@abpsu13 wait i forget whats our record against you guys the last decade? oh thats right 8-1. I would call that more than luck. Kirk owns Joe Pa end of story
@mdiggs4545 I'd personally throw out games where Iowa was Big Ten champ and Penn State had the Keystone Kops on offense, you were flat out better than us those years, so I wouldn't call it owning JoePa. 2007 we blasted you 27-7, we both were bowl eligible and 4-4 in conference, 2008 was a great Iowa upset, 2009 was no upset, your Hawkeyes were flat out better than us (we were good but Iowa was better). Generally if it's a blowout, PSU wins, if it's a squeaker, Iowa usually survives.
I'm so glad I didn't go to that game, that one stung. Good luck to Iowa though, and all I can say is hopefully Paterno realizes it's time to go and his stupid moron son goes with him. Thank God for Larry Johsnon or PSU would be a total disgrace!

@IowaOutdoorsMen4Life Sadly, there is some truth to that, you own a 7-4 record in Beaver Stadium over PSU, however, we could call Kinnick Stadium Happy Valley East since we own a 7-4 record in Iowa City. Unfortunately, I'm pessimistic about 2010 so you'll improve it to 7-5 most likely.
@MVillani1985 Your point is what? Iowa has won the last two years? and the 2010 season makes no difference.... State is done no more Clark who are they gonna blame there losses on? lol
@IISH1FtYII No, my point is that Iowa tends to lose to PSU in Kinnick Stadium. Have fun watching PSU struggle in 2010, your fun will end in 2011 once this team finds their footing. I know that Penn State is going to struggle in 2010, I'm a realist, but 2011 is a different story.
@MVillani1985 We haven't lost in Kinnick to you in over a decade. And that day you beat the absolute worst Iowa team since 1973.
Oh yeah 2011 will be fun though. Actually I think this year will be fun because even in this decade of dominance most of the games have been competitive.
@mongoose704 Well, you haven't lost to us much in over a decade to be honest. I remember that game fairly well, that was before PSU imploded in 1999, but anytime I think of the 1999 Penn State season the first thing that comes to my mind is "Dan Nystrum for the win", one of my worst memories ever as a PSU fan. I hope you're right that PSU plays Iowa close this year, but I don't see it. As much as I love PSU, I have a feeling that my Lions will lose 35-10 and finish 4-8 (1-7).
@MVillani1985 Nystrum for the win...almost nine years later to the date...Murray for the win. Same score too, 24-23. I remember 2 weeks later we played Minnesota. We were 1-9 and they were 7-3 @#17. We came up 3 yards short of a win despite being outweighed nearly 30lb per man. Mason flat out said he doesn't want to play us in two years. He was right.
Yes this season might be tough for you but if history is any indicator the game should be competitive. We just don't blow many teams out.
@mongoose704 Murray for the win doesn't hurt as much as Nystrum for the win by a long shot, because Penn State recovered by blowing out Indiana and Michigan State to go to the Rose Bowl and have another 11-2 season in 2009, now 1999, that sent us into a three game collapse, then we started 2000 at 1-4. Yeeech. You may be right that it won't be a blowout, though, Iowa was amazingly good in 2004 and we finished 4-7, but you only beat us by two points, but I have a bad feeling.
@MVillani1985 The Minnesota game in 1999 was a turning point for both our programs. We were 1-9 and getting hamemred under a new coach but stormed out to a 21-10 halftime lead against them. We came up three yards short of a win but for us to fight like that against a tough bowl bound team while being outweighed nearly 30lbs per man gave us a lot of hope for the future. Meanwhile Penn State team wouldn't fully recover until 2005, save for a good 2002 season.
@mongoose704 I think Penn State after 1999 learned to stop mailing it in every time they suffer a late upset, look at 2005 and 2008 for example, PSU followed both heartbreaking losses with multiple blowout victories. Little did people know that in 2001, Iowa would start a long run of good to great seasons (even 2007 wasn't all that bad), and finish as Big Ten champs in 2002.
@aamorri1 Yeah, Penn State was pretty much shooting themselves in the foot nonstop in the second quarter, but they did fight back in the second half. Those fourth quarter points didn't come late and PSU actually had two good shots to make it a game (with 4 minutes left and the ball at the 45 and with 1:30 left with the ball at the 12). But USC was the better team, no excuses. But I don't think Florida would have fared any better against the Trojans. NCG should have bee USC vs Utah.
@aamorri1 Here's my prediction for the 2008 teams. USC takes a 7-0 lead early, Florida responds with a field goal. USC leads 7-3 after one. USC then adds two touchdowns in the second quarter and a field goal, going up 24-3. Florida's not known for halftime adjustments (see 2009 vs Alabama) so USC would have added a TD and a FG making it 34-3. Florida makes it 38-10 early in the 4th, then USC would have put it away with a TD, then Florida scores a garbage time TD. Final score 41-17.
@MVillani1985 Now about the 2006 teams, that'd have been something different. I think the battle between the Gators and Trojans that year would have been one for the ages. They did beat a Michigan that I thought was the better than than Ohio State anyway (PSU played both Michigan and Ohio State to the wire, but Ohio State lucked out while Michigan outplayed them, plus Michigan won in Happy Valley against a white out at night while Ohio State won at home). But we as fans were denied a classic.
@aamorri1 What was especially impressive was that USC beat Arkansas the way they did in 2006 in Fayetteville like they were a I-AA team. And that Arkansas team was the SEC runner up. SEC fans claim otherwise, but the truth is, the Hogs had a 7-1 record in conference, which was actually tied for first with Florida (LSU, claimed to be the real second best had a 6-2 conference record), and had Arkansas beaten Florida (which they almost did), they'd've been SEC champs and in at least the Sugar Bowl.
@MVillani1985 I know this probably won't lesson the pain but the Big Ten was arguably never tougher than it was in 1999. 8 bowl game qualifiers, 7 invited. We went 5-2 and the losses were by a combined total of 7 points. Wins in the Rose and Orange bowls. 3-1 in New Years bowl games. 4 teams finished in the top 11 and had over ten wins. You picked a bad year to have a great team 8^)
@mongoose704 1999 was a good Big Ten year overall, but the real pain from the Minnesota upset is that 2000-2004 was pretty bad, even 2002 was a year of "what could have been" (our entire offense was Larry Johnson anyway). I think the best part of 1999 was that Penn State did give assistant coach Jerry Sandusky a great sendoff by blasting Texas A&M in the Alamo Bowl, but even then, to start 1-4 in 2000 was just plain awful. The best part of 2000 was an upset of Purdue (who would have thought?).
@MVillani1985 On the game: We will be battle tested having had a tough trip to Arizona already under our belts. I sense a feeling among the fans that a great season is pretty much a given. I disagree. Sure we return 15 starters but 6 of those losses were NFL draftees. We lost half our two deep on the O-Line and losing Spievey hurts our chances at greatness. We need an O-Line for consistency and a lockdown corner to be great.
@mongoose704 Well, if it offers any inspiration, going into 1982, Penn State lost a bunch of starters from a 1981 season where the Nittany Lions came up short of a national title thanks to losses to Miami and Alabama, and the 1982 season was to be a rebuilding year, and PSU surprises everyone by shutting down Walker in the Sugar Bowl and beating Georgia 27-23. Could a similar situation happen for Iowa? I'm not saying it's a given, but I also don't think Iowa's looking at less than 10 wins.
@MVillani1985 Thanks. And last year you were gutted on the offensive line and still put together an 11-2 season and was just our game away from a BCS bowl berth and a share of the big ten title. Your offense was just fine, except when it had to play a top caliber defensive line. That kept you put of the BCS picture, barely.
That year you beat Georgia was Iowa's breakout year from 20 years of futility. We beat 3 top 10 teams and made it to the Rose Bowl that year. Thank you Hayden.
@mongoose704 To be fair, our defense last year shut down opposing offenses even when our offense struggled (we held Ohio State to 15 first downs, 6-16 on third down, and led 6-5 in first half first downs), but I think our biggest curse was special teams, meanwhile, our best opponents, Iowa and Ohio State had killer special team units. But it does seem that 1982 was a great year for both programs, 1985-1986 was another good span for both. And the Hayden Fry legacy continues with Kirk Ferentz.
@MVillani1985 10 wins is possible. However I remember Purdue returning 15 starters from their runner up 2003 team and only going 7-5 when they were considered a contender for the big ten title. They would lose 5 games by 14 points total. The 1995 Iowa hawkeyes returned 15 starters from a 9-3 team that shut out Texas Tech in the Alamo Bowl. Despite having Tavian Banks and Tim Dwight and being a pre-season pick for the conf title by some, we went 7-5. Remember we won some nailbiters in 09
@mongoose704 I think a lot of going undefeated or even winning 10 or more regular season games hinges a lot on luck. Since fortune plays a hand in every game, even the best team can lose if their luck turns sour. I just hope that Penn State doesn't do as bad as I think they will, which is 4-8 (1-7). At this point I'd be happy with a bowl game, but if Penn State somehow magically becomes good, then I might start to get a little greedier and want an 8-4 or better season.
@MVillani1985 Lucks (lack of bad luck) helps. The 1988 Hawkeyes were ranked #1 in a few pre-season polls. Injuries tooks our offensive line and secondary out. 6-4-1 season. Then there was Oklahoma's fortunes last year. Injuries smashed a near sure return trip to the BCS title game.
The pundits sure seem sold on Penn State's chance this year, being ranked in pre-season. Do you believe it more reputation than reality?
@mongoose704 Definitely reputation more than reality. But I'm okay with it, not like we'll be ranked after week five for the remainder of the year. Sadly, only bowl PSU is going to is the Toilet Bowl. I know of a PSU example firsthand where bad luck did us in. Penn State was ranked #1 in 1997 and breezed through their first five games, then injuries started piling up, we almost lose to Minnesota and Northwestern, get steamrolled by Michigan, seemingly recover, blasting Purdue and Wisconsin...
(continued), then the injures really catch up with us as we crap the bed against a Michigan State team we had no business losing to. Then Joe Juvicius and Curtis Enis get themselves suspended for the Citrus Bowl, but despite that we keep it a 7-6 game against Florida deep into the 4th quarter, then they score 2 TDs to win. Had there been at least fewer back luck issues, PSU would have played Michigan closer (maybe even won), not crapped the bed against Sparty, and could have rolled Florida...
(still continued), but we wouldn't have been playing Florida. We'd have been playing Florida State in the Sugar Bowl, and likely would have won, because we were a better team than Ohio State, and when healthy every bit as good as Michigan. I can't get over how PSU fell apart in 1997 after starting 7-0, only to finish 9-3 with losses to two teams we had no business losing to, finishing ranked #16 and #17. On the other hand, we played better than expected in 1998, going undefeated at home.
@MVillani1985 1997 was heartbreaking for us as well. And we didn't have any serious injuries except for losing a starting linebacker who wasn't of much consequence. All those weapons we had, the terrific defense we had and we went 4-4 in conference play and lost the Sun Bowl. I could write a textbook on that season. Tavian Banks, the fastest RB to 1000 yards ever couldn't run an inch behind an experienced 0-line against tOSU. You proceed to bulldoze them the next week for nearly 300!
@mongoose704 I know this won't soothe the wounds of heartbreak of 1997, but Iowa had the best shot of anyone, including Washington State, to upset the Michigan Wolverines that year. Your special teams unit really lit up theirs, taking a 7-0 lead after the first quarter stunned them, they fought back early in the second to make it 7-7, but you made it 21-7 soon enough. Michigan stormed back, Iowa still led 24-21 after three. Michigan only came back to win late and still Iowa had two shots to win.
@MVillani1985 Special teams came up huge. Dwight had a punt return for a touchdown and came up just short of running a kickoff all the way back. But we had to settle for three because aside from a 54 yard TD scamper by Tavian Banks, we had absolutely nothing on offense. We had them 21-7 at half and just gave it up. But give credit to that Wolverine defense, they shut us down. I don't think the team recovered from that loss.
@mongoose704 Iowa played a great first half against Michigan, you outgained them in the first half something like 188-85, but in the second half they more than made up for the defecit and had about 1.5x the yards Iowa had, holding Iowa to less than 100 second half yards while rolling up around 300 themselves. That 1997 Wolverine defense was amazing. They held mighty Curtis Enis to only 108 yards if I remember right and most importantly, held Penn State to just eight points.
@mongoose704 Sometimes close losses can be so demoralizing that they cause a team to give up for the year. In that way, I think close losses are almost worse than blowout losses. But then again, 2008 Iowa refused to give up, and even though in my opinion Penn State played better for three and a half quarters, Iowa did what they needed to and won 24-23, that seemed to be the perfect medicine for the Hawkeyes, as they've won all but two close games since.
Oklahoma'a weakness last year was their Inexperience on the Offensive Line. They had 4 starters from the 2008 team who moved on. It didn't matter if all those guys were healthy. They still would've lost at least two games and missed the BCS. Bradford becomes a very average quarterback when he's under pressure.
@aamorri1 " It didn't matter if all those guys were healthy" To say that losing two consensus all americans and first round draft picks for the year didn't make a difference is silly. 9 other starters missed significant playing time as well. I would have to hit the stupid button on my head (and I do have one) to say that it didn't affect their record.
Bradford being overrated? Probably but he was still the best they had and to say losing him is purely disconnecting from common sense.
We may have lost but we still have the best student section in the country, 2nd largest stadium, greatest show in college football and #1 party school.
wow seriously guys try to be a little classy. Good game Iowa you always give us hell when we play. Regardless the Whiteout and Whitehouse games are still awesome no matter what team you support. Coming on here and trash talking like a 4th grader does not represent your team well.
I can honestly say, I was really disappointed by the white out. Obviously the rain runied it, but the thing I was most excited for in traveling to the game was to see it, and it really just wasn't there except for the student section.
i agree fully. i was in the student section and we were trying but to see people in the alumni section wearing red, orange, and yellow ponchos was disgusting to me. great job by the hawkeyes, but wow did we play bad. especially late in the game.
hahahahahaha what a joke!!!! Penn State is soooo OVER-RATED it's not even funny!!! Once again, the hawkeyes upset you little lions regardless if you dress in white or not!!! All I have to say is ...... GO HAWKS!!!!!! WE ARE........... I.O.W.A!!!!
Are you kidding? Your only good play was the first one you ran. Other than that, our D shut you down completely. Did you even watch the run attempts? They didn't work. And you got murdered on special teams and field position. There are very obvious reasons for why you lost. Your QB threw one inconvenient pick, but Stanzi threw 2 as well. So it's not like there wasn't equal opportunity. You got beat on D.
This was the worst game

You picked a bad year to have a great team 8^)
mongoose704 1 year ago
@mongoose704 Sorry 4 teams had at least ten wins.
mongoose704 1 year ago
@mongoose704 1999 was a good Big Ten year overall, but the real pain from the Minnesota upset is that 2000-2004 was pretty bad, even 2002 was a year of "what could have been" (our entire offense was Larry Johnson anyway). I think the best part of 1999 was that Penn State did give assistant coach Jerry Sandusky a great sendoff by blasting Texas A&M in the Alamo Bowl, but even then, to start 1-4 in 2000 was just plain awful. The best part of 2000 was an upset of Purdue (who would have thought?).
MVillani1985 1 year ago
@MVillani1985 On the game: We will be battle tested having had a tough trip to Arizona already under our belts. I sense a feeling among the fans that a great season is pretty much a given. I disagree. Sure we return 15 starters but 6 of those losses were NFL draftees. We lost half our two deep on the O-Line and losing Spievey hurts our chances at greatness. We need an O-Line for consistency and a lockdown corner to be great.
mongoose704 1 year ago
@mongoose704 Well, if it offers any inspiration, going into 1982, Penn State lost a bunch of starters from a 1981 season where the Nittany Lions came up short of a national title thanks to losses to Miami and Alabama, and the 1982 season was to be a rebuilding year, and PSU surprises everyone by shutting down Walker in the Sugar Bowl and beating Georgia 27-23. Could a similar situation happen for Iowa? I'm not saying it's a given, but I also don't think Iowa's looking at less than 10 wins.
MVillani1985 1 year ago
@MVillani1985 Thanks. And last year you were gutted on the offensive line and still put together an 11-2 season and was just our game away from a BCS bowl berth and a share of the big ten title. Your offense was just fine, except when it had to play a top caliber defensive line. That kept you put of the BCS picture, barely.
That year you beat Georgia was Iowa's breakout year from 20 years of futility. We beat 3 top 10 teams and made it to the Rose Bowl that year. Thank you Hayden.
mongoose704 1 year ago
@mongoose704 To be fair, our defense last year shut down opposing offenses even when our offense struggled (we held Ohio State to 15 first downs, 6-16 on third down, and led 6-5 in first half first downs), but I think our biggest curse was special teams, meanwhile, our best opponents, Iowa and Ohio State had killer special team units. But it does seem that 1982 was a great year for both programs, 1985-1986 was another good span for both. And the Hayden Fry legacy continues with Kirk Ferentz.
MVillani1985 1 year ago
@MVillani1985 10 wins is possible. However I remember Purdue returning 15 starters from their runner up 2003 team and only going 7-5 when they were considered a contender for the big ten title. They would lose 5 games by 14 points total. The 1995 Iowa hawkeyes returned 15 starters from a 9-3 team that shut out Texas Tech in the Alamo Bowl. Despite having Tavian Banks and Tim Dwight and being a pre-season pick for the conf title by some, we went 7-5. Remember we won some nailbiters in 09
mongoose704 1 year ago
@mongoose704 I think a lot of going undefeated or even winning 10 or more regular season games hinges a lot on luck. Since fortune plays a hand in every game, even the best team can lose if their luck turns sour. I just hope that Penn State doesn't do as bad as I think they will, which is 4-8 (1-7). At this point I'd be happy with a bowl game, but if Penn State somehow magically becomes good, then I might start to get a little greedier and want an 8-4 or better season.
MVillani1985 1 year ago
@MVillani1985 Lucks (lack of bad luck) helps. The 1988 Hawkeyes were ranked #1 in a few pre-season polls. Injuries tooks our offensive line and secondary out. 6-4-1 season. Then there was Oklahoma's fortunes last year. Injuries smashed a near sure return trip to the BCS title game.
The pundits sure seem sold on Penn State's chance this year, being ranked in pre-season. Do you believe it more reputation than reality?
mongoose704 1 year ago
@mongoose704 Definitely reputation more than reality. But I'm okay with it, not like we'll be ranked after week five for the remainder of the year. Sadly, only bowl PSU is going to is the Toilet Bowl. I know of a PSU example firsthand where bad luck did us in. Penn State was ranked #1 in 1997 and breezed through their first five games, then injuries started piling up, we almost lose to Minnesota and Northwestern, get steamrolled by Michigan, seemingly recover, blasting Purdue and Wisconsin...
MVillani1985 1 year ago
(continued), then the injures really catch up with us as we crap the bed against a Michigan State team we had no business losing to. Then Joe Juvicius and Curtis Enis get themselves suspended for the Citrus Bowl, but despite that we keep it a 7-6 game against Florida deep into the 4th quarter, then they score 2 TDs to win. Had there been at least fewer back luck issues, PSU would have played Michigan closer (maybe even won), not crapped the bed against Sparty, and could have rolled Florida...
MVillani1985 1 year ago
(still continued), but we wouldn't have been playing Florida. We'd have been playing Florida State in the Sugar Bowl, and likely would have won, because we were a better team than Ohio State, and when healthy every bit as good as Michigan. I can't get over how PSU fell apart in 1997 after starting 7-0, only to finish 9-3 with losses to two teams we had no business losing to, finishing ranked #16 and #17. On the other hand, we played better than expected in 1998, going undefeated at home.
MVillani1985 1 year ago
@MVillani1985 1997 was heartbreaking for us as well. And we didn't have any serious injuries except for losing a starting linebacker who wasn't of much consequence. All those weapons we had, the terrific defense we had and we went 4-4 in conference play and lost the Sun Bowl. I could write a textbook on that season. Tavian Banks, the fastest RB to 1000 yards ever couldn't run an inch behind an experienced 0-line against tOSU. You proceed to bulldoze them the next week for nearly 300!
mongoose704 1 year ago
@mongoose704 I know this won't soothe the wounds of heartbreak of 1997, but Iowa had the best shot of anyone, including Washington State, to upset the Michigan Wolverines that year. Your special teams unit really lit up theirs, taking a 7-0 lead after the first quarter stunned them, they fought back early in the second to make it 7-7, but you made it 21-7 soon enough. Michigan stormed back, Iowa still led 24-21 after three. Michigan only came back to win late and still Iowa had two shots to win.
MVillani1985 1 year ago
@MVillani1985 Special teams came up huge. Dwight had a punt return for a touchdown and came up just short of running a kickoff all the way back. But we had to settle for three because aside from a 54 yard TD scamper by Tavian Banks, we had absolutely nothing on offense. We had them 21-7 at half and just gave it up. But give credit to that Wolverine defense, they shut us down. I don't think the team recovered from that loss.
mongoose704 1 year ago
@mongoose704 Iowa played a great first half against Michigan, you outgained them in the first half something like 188-85, but in the second half they more than made up for the defecit and had about 1.5x the yards Iowa had, holding Iowa to less than 100 second half yards while rolling up around 300 themselves. That 1997 Wolverine defense was amazing. They held mighty Curtis Enis to only 108 yards if I remember right and most importantly, held Penn State to just eight points.
MVillani1985 1 year ago
@MVillani1985 Actually 187 was our total yards for the game and 53 came on one first half run.
I don't think our team ever recovered. But in retrospect that Michigan D was truly amazing.
mongoose704 1 year ago
@mongoose704 Sometimes close losses can be so demoralizing that they cause a team to give up for the year. In that way, I think close losses are almost worse than blowout losses. But then again, 2008 Iowa refused to give up, and even though in my opinion Penn State played better for three and a half quarters, Iowa did what they needed to and won 24-23, that seemed to be the perfect medicine for the Hawkeyes, as they've won all but two close games since.
MVillani1985 1 year ago
@mongoose704
Oklahoma'a weakness last year was their Inexperience on the Offensive Line. They had 4 starters from the 2008 team who moved on. It didn't matter if all those guys were healthy. They still would've lost at least two games and missed the BCS. Bradford becomes a very average quarterback when he's under pressure.
aamorri1 1 year ago
@aamorri1 " It didn't matter if all those guys were healthy" To say that losing two consensus all americans and first round draft picks for the year didn't make a difference is silly. 9 other starters missed significant playing time as well. I would have to hit the stupid button on my head (and I do have one) to say that it didn't affect their record.
Bradford being overrated? Probably but he was still the best they had and to say losing him is purely disconnecting from common sense.
mongoose704 1 year ago
@aamorri1 BTW in fairness to you replacing four starters on the offensive line definitely would make a difference as well.

I can honestly say, I was really disappointed by the white out. Obviously the rain runied it, but the thing I was most excited for in traveling to the game was to see it, and it really just wasn't there except for the student section.

i agree fully. i was in the student section and we were trying but to see people in the alumni section wearing red, orange, and yellow ponchos was disgusting to me. great job by the hawkeyes, but wow did we play bad. especially late in the game.

marshall2411 2 years ago
Are you kidding? Your only good play was the first one you ran. Other than that, our D shut you down completely. Did you even watch the run attempts? They didn't work. And you got murdered on special teams and field position. There are very obvious reasons for why you lost. Your QB threw one inconvenient pick, but Stanzi threw 2 as well. So it's not like there wasn't equal opportunity. You got beat on D.
