what would be the measurements (dimensions) of each stave (20) if i want to build a 14" x 7" snare drum?? (lenght, width and thickness)

and is it better to be 24 or 20 staves?? thank you very much!!

I used to make 20 stave shells but now I use 30 staves. I like the look of the thinner staves. For that size of drum I would use 8 1/2" length by 2 1/2" width and 7/8" thick cut on a 6 degree bevel. The extra length leaves some to cut off which you need.

I think it's 2 3/16" but it's been a while since I used 20. What you need to do is make up a drawing of what you want to build. Make it on paper or cardboard or something. The drawing will answer all your questions when it's done. If you think about it everything is built from some kind of drawing.

i really appreciate it..but i turned 14" into cm = aprox 35,56 cm. now i divide it into 20 and the result is 1,77..what am i doing wrong?? because the value should be higher..

I don't think you can do it that way.Take 360 degrees divide it by 20 and you get 18 degrees and divide that by 2 because you have a compound angle and you get 9 degrees that is the angle to cut the pieces. Now make a drawing and use those angles to draw out for the staves. Draw out a circle the size you want and use a protractor to draw out the angles for each piece. If you know what I mean always draw out a lay out . Just start working on the drawing and you will figure it out as you go along.

how is it called that paintor powder that goes mixed with water or alcohol and is applied to wood but its a bit transparent so you can still see the wood??

do you glue up the tongue and the groove?? or just the rest?

@bcwdrums or you could use Trigonometry and you'd have a guaranteed, precise answer, and use less than a half sheet of paper

how large should the blocks measure if i am going to make it out of 24 peices? is a joint necesary or advised to make to connect the blocks together?

You need to draw out what you are trying to build on paper. It will help you understand how to build a drum shell. You can start out with a butt joint for your first shells.

i am going to build a 13 x 7 stave shell. what angle do i pre cut the blocks before assembling the shell?

For a twenty four piece 13" stave shell the angle would be 7.5 degrees

You can cut the end grain on the table saw but it won't make as nice and clean a cut as the lathe.
