watch out for the water of your roof.If you have birdshit on your roof it will get into your watersupply. All sorts of nasties in there boil before you drink.
There are large mason jars. I think I payed 15$ for 6. Great store water in and dried goods as well such as quinoa, raw oat groats, beans, dried fruit, nuts, seeds, etc.
Was curious about your rain water collector, You mentioned to use food grade plastic containers, but I notice your roof collector looks like plastic as well, does that have to be a specific grade. I was thinking being exposed to the sun constantly that this would break down that plastic and leach chemicals into the water running off of it. Also any of that type of concerns for rain gutters and certain types of roof tiles also leaching chemicals into the water?
@MrBRL Definitely - yes. I use plastic here because large glass bottles are nowhere near as easy as the plastic ones to get hold of, at least not in the UK.
Great video. I nail a large tarp to my roof just prior to a rain and gather the tarp together at the bottom, then place it into a PVC pipe leading to a food grade 55 gallon drum. I have collected 55 gallons in 4 minutes in a hard rain.
if a type X Solar Flare hits it will hit all utilities, water, electric and gas, electric = no lights, no pumps working at petrol station.. Water = no water being pumped through substations to homes.. Gas = no gas to power cookers
Storing water is so important and we do tend to forget it.
I remember, I think it was in 2001, the small city of Walkerton, here in Canada, had no drinkable water for weeks. An unusual rainstorm hit the area and the soil became so wet that all the bad stuff from the farming soils came up to the surface and a rare strain of E.coli bacteria developed. It spread to fast that it contaminated everything. People couldn't even drink rain waters because it was too dangerous.
It is a water maker. You simply put the intake hose in a bucket of urine, brackish, salty sea water, dirty water or otherwise tainted water and... TADA! Fresh potable water pours out of the fresh water hose at 35 gallons a day.
AND... the best part.... since the large troops withdrawal from Iraq, a bunch of these unused military surplus can be found on Amazon and eBay for a 1/10th of the original price.
@rickvanman Know what you mean. The retail price is huge.
I actually picked up a military surplus version on eBay for less than $300. Came with additional preservative, so I was able to try it out before putting it in storage for when SHTF. It's simply amazing... rugged and just pumps fresh water from saline solution, its self-cleaning and doesn't clog (unlike ceramic filters).
It's like a filter for salt! LOL
I think your RAF uses them too, maybe you have a military surplus option there?
Water is SO precious! get paper plates and cups (not plastic) if your living off stored water you'll save a ton of water by NOT having to clean them, (while still remaining civilized). and then they can just be buried or burnt as fuel for a cooking fire. etc...
@rickvanman If I didn't want to add any kind of chemicals to my filtered rain water couldn't I just boil it and then straight into my storage?? It may take some transferring around of the water but if it means no bleach or other chemicals then it would be worth it to me. Thanks.
Did you tell us how much bleach to add to river water to destroy bactoria and how long before you could drink it? ? Maybe someone can get unpure water. We used to drink water out of wood cisterns here I am still alive after 70 years. Good luck with your plastic----
Thank you for all your helpful tips. I want to store water for as long as possible, years even, and clearly plastic bottles aren't really the best due to the bottles breaking down and contaminating the water like you said. Is there some kind of big barrels I can buy that are food/water safe for the long term? What kind would you recommend from where? Thank you in advance!
@krusier11 You can get those big blue barrels that the UN use out in africa - an internet search should locate them, but a good water filter like a Berkey might be a better option - you can purify stagnany pond water in a Berkey and they only cost about £160. I use one all the time - it takes the fluride out of my tap water.
Hot water tank is the best source of safe water. Make sure each year you flush out several gallons of water to remove the sediments and test the pressure release valve . Also it will make your water tank run more efficient and last longer in the long term. Another bonus is to strap your water tank to the wall in case of an earthquake.
Hello, Rickvanman. I am a fellow prepper living in Australia.
Your videos have excellent advice in them that has helped me a lot. I like your style of presentation and how you're practical and logical in your preparations. Hopefully you'll do well if (when) something bad happens in England.
I have made my own preparations such as Bug Out Bag and a small cache of food and water, but I really need to take your advice and store more water. :)
@Yoshark777 Thanks for the comment - glad you like the videos. Just got a Berkey water filter for the water situation - the filters can last up to 10 years and will make stagnant pond water or rain water into purified drinking water, so well worth a look :o)
@shelladavis it can remove some viruses, but not all as they are too small. one way to help counter this is to put a pure silver coin in the bottom tank.
On one video(ken arima) the guy called the Blits company' chemist and asked "Is it safe to store drinking water in your fuel containers?" The man said "Of course it is. we have tom assume that you are going to put fruit punch in those things."
humans can live without water for 3 days a lot of people do it all over the world on a regular basis actually. I hate when people use the 3 day rule because its inaccurate and it makes them afraid and they actually end up wasting water by drinking more than they need. People from the US and western europe just have a lot higher living standards, so we think we need these things. You would be more than fine with just one medium water bottle per day for drinking (unless its in hot weather)
Greetings from Switzerland. Thanks for the usefull info. I have been considering getting prepared for a while and now I think i will start. I need to put my Nuclear/Chemical shelter to practical use. We all have these bunkers in our homes but most people use them to store wine! I think the theory is, when things look final, lock yourself in the bunker and drink yourself to death!... but dont forget to put a corkscrew and a big container for pee in there!
I understand that our society and infrastructure is a LOT more fragile than most people are willing to believe or accept. We really are just a few meals away from becoming a third world country.
Problem is, most people are far too comfortable in their homes drinking beer and watching X-factor to be bothered about learning from the lessons that the fuel protests, and hurrcaine Katrina taught us.
If my video's help to wake up just one person to this understanding, I'll be happy :o)

thanks for the interesting advice @ 3:42, I never knew that. I always wondered why bottled water had a sell by date.. now I understand!.
How about using glass bottles?, that would solve the chemical issue.
I tell you what; for a guy who says he doen't buy into all the conspiracy theories.. you're prety well prepared for the things that some theorists are predicting!. I'm only teasing.. I completely get the angle you are comming at these subject from : ). Very good advice you're giving, Sir.
Excellent video. I store water in one gallon glass jugs. You can put them under the bed, behind the couch, up in the attic, in the garage, even outdoors in the backyard because it's glass. The grocery stores sell one gallon glass apple juice. Never throw the glass jug away. Store water in it, and then just put it in the backyard and cover it with a tarp or something.
Don't forget keeping a portable water filter/pump unit to hand. These units will filter out bacteria and virus and are often used on expeditions where there are some really nasty water-bourne nasties floating around.
Useful for when all your stored water runs out. You can filter a muddy puddle on a farm and safely drink the results.
some pepole may think this is silly but when you think about it its far from NOT being silly coz the way this world is goin somthing like that maybe just around the corner
i remember my old science teacher showed us how to take salt water (we live on the cost) and put it in a bin or something with plastic on top with a marble in the middle and a cup in the midle of the inside, so what would happen, the water would condensates on the plastic and drip down to the cup, and presto clean watter :)
Great video, Rick! Looking forward to the upcoming ones!! =) YOu can never be TOO prepared. I know people here in the States that still have bomb shelters stocked.
where i live in Australia everyone HAS to have a water tank, i have a 22,730 L water tank on my house, this is because of drought and so on, but i do have 30 or so empty soft drink bottles under my bed

Invest in a Solar Oven, and you can make one cheaper out of cardboard boxes, foil, a piece of glass...just google it :) You can bake anything.

@Unicron4ever
A lot of people died and half of the 5,000 citizens became very ill.
I remember watching entire convoys of water bottles being shipped to the town. People had to wash everything, but had no water to do it.
Just walking outside was enough to contaminate yourself, your shoes and clothes. Everything had to be disinfected.
Watching the soldiers and medics walk around in chemical suits was disturbing.
The water shortage turned that quiet place into a warzone look-alike in no time.
