South africa cannot be generalised just like other countries. Choose Cape Town, PE, or any other safer areas and it would be the best holiday destinations you can think of. Johannesburg is where 50% of crime takes place!!!!
@bluexxg I agree with you 100%! Visit beautiful South Africa. It's amazingly beautiful. One should be realistic when visiting any country, and don't let crime deter you from visiting SA. Look at the fantastic job SA did hosting the World Cup! I look forward to my 6th trip there in 2011!
@DaSlug32 South africa is great man. Like most countrys you gotta be in the right place at the right time. Stay away from certain neighbourhoods and makes sure you use your common sense. Ive lived in SA for 21 years and have had no problems. Choose your suburb and most importantly choose your city. Johannesburg is where most of the horrific crimes happen. Move to Cape Town or PE!!! We love it here.
As I understand it is something like this. The attack has to start before you can shoot them. If they break in you have to wait for them to shoot first or point a gun at you. Something ridiculous like that.
Yes, it's very sad. My sister in law was attacked in bed sleeping in late one morning while her sons were playing in another room. Someone climbed a tree and went over their protective wall.
I'm not sure, but I'm heading back to South Africa in a week, so I'll check. I know that there are private home security guards that do shoot first and ask questions later.
That's not a home, that is a CELL.

@DesertLaser We're not used to these kinds of guarded compounds. Very sad.

Do not bother visiting South Africa. Spend your money else where.
