Thanks for the advice Cc,last summer was my first, with a pond, allthough Iv`e had many years of fishkeeping,I struggled a bit at first, but eventually the external filter with UV light cleared the water, and a small waterfall kept it airated, wich left me with the problem of surface rubbish,so I will take on board your advice and have a look at skimmers, once the weather warms up.
Thanks for getting back to me CC,my pond is on the small size, about 1500 Lts,and only about 2ft deep, surface contamination is a real problem, and on reading the comments on the floating type skimmers,(on amazon),people say that they stire up mud from the bottom.my pond is pumped, and filtered, externally, but the pond pump does get blocked at least once every couple of weeks.
@donnycross 3 things that keep pond clear and unclogged. 1) pump from bottom of pond to filter. 2) Skimmer to pull debris and protein from surface to a filter. 3) Lots of airation 4) Pond Balance powder. If your main pump is getting blocked try putting it in the dark so no sunlight hits it, the light makes the algae grow on or near it and clogs it up. All the skimmers work well but make sure the water goes to a gravity filter to take out the debris rather than push them back in the pond.
@donnycross It's an OASE aquaskim...you also need a pump that attached to it to pull the water, get one that does not block easily because this pulls all the large bits from the surface. Mine is also fed back to a filter. Also needs to be in a place where you can access it. :)
