  • goldberg: this isn't in the script.

regal: shit just got real bitch.

  • Regal is the best wrestler in the world.

  • @out0fstepxxx That is truth :)

  • This match never seemed to click, Goldberg was so green at this time and they were trying to make Regal carry him to an actual wrestling match? You can clearly see Goldberg is confused, falling down and selling and no selling moves at random and using some terrible looking wrestling moves. It feels like Regal is actually wrestling himself, not Goldberg. Not really anyone's fault but the bookers who wanted an actual technical wrestling match out of Goldberg.

  • @fan977 This match wasn't booked this way. It was supposed to be a squash. Regal made it into a shoot wrestling match. That's why they fired him.

  • @EddieNeverSleeps In Regal's book, he says that the match was supposed to be 6 mins long. Regal was trying to make Goldberg look good but Goldberg had never been in anything but squash matches. He had no clue what to do.

  • @geldofpunk32 How was he trying to make him look good by kicking his ass?

  • @EddieNeverSleeps That is what he says in his book...

  • @geldofpunk32 So Regal says he was trying to make Berg look good even tho Regal was whuppin him. hmm.

What book is this that u speak of? What is it called?

  • @EddieNeverSleeps It's called Walking A Golden Mile. It was released in 2005. He says he was told to go out and have a competitive 6 min match with Goldberg. Goldy had only done squashes to that point and had no clue what to do. Regal says he was giving Goldberg tons of opportunities for offense but he wouldn't take them.

  • Damn, Regal was HUGE, hell, bigger than Goldberg.

He should have been a monster heel!

  • Green ... Just green.

  • Regal was looking pretty flabby here, probably the reason for the singlet. The match was pretty good really, lots of the "technical" stuff and the Goldberg power at the end. Good stuff all around. I thought the same thing when I first saw this on TV, and my opinion hasn't changed.

  • This is 1 of the reasons Regal got fired by WCW. Made their next big star look like a schmuck.

  • too good for tv

  • goldberg was "FOR REAL" before benoit

  • this just proves regal is one of the best superstars

  • Weather this was a shoot by regal or not I'm pretty sure we can all agree that he owned Goldberg the entire match...... Regal out wrestled Goldberg the whole match

  • Regal did not get fired from this..this is not a shoot..wrestling entertainment fans are dumb

  • @ebz1221

Wiki did say however this wasn't a Shoot

and this was suppose to be a squash Match

  • Regal is just pure gold xD

  • I honestly enjoyed this match. Regal made it something to actually have interest in, that being said I like watching Goldberg steamroll people as much as anyone else.

  • Regal got fired because of this lool

  • problem with me saying Regal is one of the best in ring techs of our lifetime? no? ok

How long had Goldy been around here?

The guy isn't benoit but u think he walked into the power plant and said i'm going 2 be on nitro and a whc in a month? NO they chose him!

The guy has great athleticism. he knew what he was doing just wasn't as sharp as the 30yr vet regal.

regal sold the spear worse than anyone i have ever seen.

and i would LOVE to see regal try n jackhammer the 500lb Giant

    THE MAN!

  • @theraVen27 Well said. Regal didnt even sell to Goldberg's Irish whip.

  • Yeah, now let's see Nash/Hogan/Big Show do this. Goldberg got picked on for "not working" because he was given such an immediate push and people didn't seem to grasp that he was supposed to be squashing people. So the immediate reaction of internet wrestling nerds was, "he can't work!" Whatever. All Regal did here was prove Goldberg paid attention at the power plant. Was he green? Of course. But he was plenty capable of developing into a great wrestler if he'd stayed in it.

  • little known fact but Steve Regal was fired right after this match for not putting Goldberg over quickly

  • Regal was giving them gold that entire match and the crowd goes nuts over the stupid spear. Goldberg didn't look too bad, though.

  • definitely goldbergs best match. way to go regal!

  • This appears pretty accurate to Regal's telling. Goldberg was so basic that they couldn't do many moves, hence why he always had 90 second matches.

  • Little Jimmy!! @ 0:08

  • That seems to be Goldberg's biggest problem. The dude always made enemies with people who were trying to make him look better than he was like Regal and Jericho. But he's still friends with the guy who booked a match where he lost his streak due to cattle prod interference.

  • @BlasphemousMouse

Next time, counter arguments by throwing up facts. Moron.

  • Regal ends up looking pretty bad in these, this match is sloppy.

  • According to wcw management, Regal in this match appeared more aggressive and stiff than expected with the then-rising star. It was later revealed that most of Regal's moves on Goldberg were shoot-style moves, which caught Goldberg off-guard at the time. However, in his autobiography, Regal disputes this.

  • @cactus9889 thank you wikipedia

  • first go gym regal

  • great match, could say best goldberg match, and was a regular match for the great regal.

  • Whose idea was it to put Regal in singlets?

  • I'm pretty sure this is Goldberg's best match.

  • regal is a teacher in the art of the wrestling and goldberg is a ...product only

  • This match shows a different side to Goldberg, very under rated in my opnion. And regal never got the push he deserved.

  • European style pro wrestling tends to be considerably stiffer and more intricate than what Goldberg learned at the Power Plant. Regal really just wanted to show Goldberg's limited skill set and succeeded admirably. Considering Billy Robinson (Regal's trainer) still trains MMA fighters today, it's not hard to see Regal having a wider technique list.

  • @Dynaman21 He was ashamed of what he did in that Goldberg match, and describes himself as having been drugged out of his mind and in terrible physical shape. He was heavily addicted to pain killers at the time. This is all from Regal's book.

  • Comment removed

  • Regal got fired for drunken behaviour on flights, etc. It was just a coincidence that he got fired after this match.

  • Regal took greenhorns Bill to school. I think he got sacked the next day.

  • Regal did not even sell the irish whip. Great match though

  • Borrrrrrriinnnng! What's with all the arm locks and European uppercuts?

  • @OptimusPrimeribs You mean the wrestling?

  • @fidgetstick I mean the same moves being overused.

  • I bet Regal could kick Goldberg's ass in real life.

  • @JuicyPlayer HELL YEAH! Even Y2J kick GOLDBITCH ass by using wrestling move on him in a real fight backstage. So yeah Regal would have destory him outside on prowrestling

  • @WilsonT011 Did a 2 year old post this?

  • @davelovesnaomi YES, ALMOST 3 LOL

  • a shame he got fired cuz he out wrestled goldberg

  • wow, Goldberg could work!

  • Are we really at the point where smarks can't recognize a good job when they see one? Look at 2:27! and 3:11 I never in hundreds of matches saw any other big muscle wrestler do that. Lesnar never did, batista never did, hell I never even saw benoit do that.

  • Whoever thinks "Goldberg" did a good job is mistaken. The only reason he got any of those throws off was because Regal allowed him to. You could tell by how Goldberg landed and was lifted awkwardly in the t\throws that they were legit. The knees and European uppercuts were pretty stiff. This match showed how Goldberg at this point, and for the rest of his career had a limited move set.

  • @TheRocarich Shut up and stop acting like you know everything because the way they fell. Thats like saying you could beat my ass haha yea right

  • @TheRocarich ... Yeah durr. It's all a work. The guys WORK together. Meaning they allow each other to perform moves on each other. >>

Regal is a more crafted, honed, and just all around more skilled WRESTLER then Goldberg(and I'm willing to say 90% of the guys in this business) but I just don't get all the talk about how Regal "EMBARRASSED" Goldberg in this match. It just looked like a great, realistic, rough, shoot-style match to me.

  • @Deadsticle

Yeah it's not like Goldberg outwrestled Regal or anything... You can say is more crafted, and honed, but clearly judging by this Goldberg was a better wrestler / martial artist etc.

  • @YoshiBeStuntinYBS Any pro wrestling match has nothing to do with how skilled somebody is in a real life fight situation on the simple fact that it is all staged and practiced. You can't use a Pro Wrestling match to determine how well somebody would do in for example an MMA match because they are two different things. Simple as that.

  • @YoshiBeStuntinYBS Are you high?

Regal would have pulled his head off had he so chosen. He learned from Billy Robinson.

  • @TheRocarich : The only reason any wrestler gets any moves off is because your opponent allows you to. As the late great Gorilla Monsoon once said, "You are only going to look as good as your opponent wants you to look."

  • @TheRocarich The only reason Goldberg got any of those throws off is because Regal "allowed" him too? Uh, that's what pro wrestling is supposed to be...cooperation between opponents to put on an exhibition of wrestling. I can't believe you even typed that.

  • Are you guys a bunch of idiots. Goldberg did a tremendous job with his takedowns in this match. He's always had wrestling skill.

  • Regal is a far better wrestler than Goldberg ever was.

  • This match got Regal fired for showing up Goldberg but we all know if wrestling were real in the Olympic sense then Regal could beat anybody hands down, not a great body but he has tremendous amateur skill in submission aswell as being a tough brawler too.

  • Regal simply outwrestled Goldberg, making him look shit, and i found it right, because Goldberg really believed to be that good.

this was before Goldberg smartened up.

I always loved Regal, and how he meant wrestling, every match with regal, is so intense, that even skeptical men understand that pro-wrestling may be scripted, but can be fucking hard to do.

    Thank you regal.

  • Goldberg had all the makings of a great wrestler he was just pushed to fast and believed his own hype. The guy would surprise you and occasionally show flashes of brilliance with some crazy ass flip or move.

  • In a way Regal turned it into a real wrestling match and made it a hard fought victory for Goldberg.

  • Does anyone know if there's any validity to what Regal himself claims in his autobiography? He says the plan all along was to have a competitive 5-6 minute match, but once they got in the ring Goldberg was unprepared/unequipped to do so. Granted, this was right around the time Regal started his dark descent into drug addiction, so it's possible his memory played some tricks on him- though throughout the rest of the book he seems completely willing to fess up to mistakes if they are his.

  • I think this is a good way to show the crowd that Goldberg can wrestle well

  • blows a line of coke and then 6:52

  • i remember this match very well. First time I ever saw someone put up some what of a fight with Bill.

  • hHe was fired because He didnt let Goldberg Squash Him

  • Why did they fire Regal for this? He actually made Glodberg look like he could wrestle!

  • @masteroffpeanuts

Regal appeared more aggressive and stiff (wrestler puts excessive force into his attacks or maneuvers on his opponent) than expected with Goldberg. Most of Regals moves were unplanned/unscripted. William Regal was supposed to lose to Goldberg in a squash (fast match where one wrestler dominates the match from bell to bell).

  • @Nacturl That's why regal was fired the first time, he didnt want to put over goldberg that way. I don't blame regal, A veteran jobbing to a rookie? He just wasn't about to let that happen scripted or not

  • @masteroffpeanuts This wasn't the match, it happened on TBS Saturday Night.

  • @masteroffpeanuts exactly, everyone says this is the infamous match where regal exposed goldberg for the noob he was.But after watching it for the 1st time I thought it was a pretty great match the only problem is regal got a little too much offense in.And there were some sloppy mis cues. But Lookin at the match I dont think goldberg was shown up to be a talentless rookie. It just dented his monster mystique

  • I remember watching this match and thinking how great it was. Regal wrestled him like I expected Regal too.

  • Regal's attitude was very unprofessional, he was in bad shape, addict and thought he it was beneath him to job to Goldberg the man who was being built as the future star of the company. He deserved getting fired.

  • Regal didn't Job right away, He pretty much stiffed Goldberg and that's what led to his firing...

  • 2:30 and 3:11 for guys who thinks that Bill can't wrestle, he looks better than whole Raw roster of today!

  • During some of his facial expressions, Regal looks like Al Bundy.

  • @DaKiddD lol

  • Regal is a damn good wrestler and he did challenge Goldberg to be more than smashmouth wrestler. It was a damn fine match and if you don't like it then go watch TNA where all the other wannabes are.

  • @Gringo4202 AJ Styles, Christopher Daniels, Sting, etc are all such wannabes right?

  • Regal was suppose to lose in squash style match like a lot of other wrestlers to goldberg at the time to make him look indestructable. So regal used a load of shoot wrestling moves (Real) And it caught goldberg off guard and he didnt really know what was happening.

After this he got fired from wcw.

  • Im glad Regal didnt job to Greenberg. Regal is ten times more talented than Greenberg. Regal should get a HOF nod sometime down the line.

  • the most wrestling goldberg has ever done in a match

  • @arnez8706

What about the Halloween Havoc 1998 match against Diamond Dallas Page?

  • The story is Regal broke KayFabe

  • Ever considered Regal was calling the whole match and gave Goldberg his first decent match in WCW. Regal could of beat him in a shoot at any time.

  • This is very unprofessional of Regal. He put himself, and Goldberg in danger. He deserved to be fired. You are there to perform a job, not to showcase your ego.

  • @emanc93 But it ended up being a classic

  • @emanc93 If regal wanted to put gillberg in danger im pretty sure he could of ripped him a new one very quickly

  • Regal whooped that ass

  • In Regal's book, he said he got fired because he made Goldberg look bad in this match. I sure don't agree. I think this was one of Goldberg's better matches.

  • @doctoro71 It was supposed to be a quick squash, and Regal made it longer than it was meant to be. Regal was a much better technical wrestler than Goldberg. Goldberg was a power wrestler, and a good at what he did.

  • @doctoro71 Dumbass he looked good because he was in there with a real wrestler. Regal has made alot of nobody's look good over the years.

  • @jland3622 Why is he a dumbass? Goldberg was green, but pretty good at submission/MMA style wrestling. He just didnt have the seasoning to be the badass completely. Regal made Goldberg look better, and the shoot style was something different. Im sure you're just a troll looking to start an argument. FAIL

  • @prowrestlingfreak Because i said he was. Now do yourself a favor and fuckoff bitch boy.

  • @jland3622 Lol keyboard cowboys like you are funny

  • @doctoro71 Thats ebcause regal made him work and didnt make it a 2 minute squash match

  • 2:55 "Do It Again!!! I Told U Do It Again!!!. All You Gon' Do Is Make'm Mad!!!" ..LOL SMH

  • Goldberg was a better wrestler then 90% of the pussies today. They would cry like girls if they were in this match. WCW 4 life!

  • "This has to be one of the stiffest tests yet for Goldberg." No shit, bro.

  • regal > goldberg. although i was surprised at the chain wrestling goldberg displayed.

  • All I see is that Regal is sandbagging and being had to work with. Was he trying to show that wrestling is a scripted preformance? "OOhhh wow, look If I don't go along with the performance Bill Does not look so tough". Well OBVIOUSLY not, you never see MMA guys using Pro-Wrestling moves, and it looked like Bill was trying to keep it to the performance. He was young then and likely had very little idea of what Regal was doing = Being Unprofessional

  • @meathead320 I read that Regal was upset with Goldberg being proposed as this invincible, destructive being & felt he didn't deserve the exposure he was getting. He wasn't so much showing that wrestling was a scripted performance, moreover trying to show Goldberg up. As it happened, it actually made quite an entertaining match of wrestling skill!

  • You know, Regal denied that this was off-script and listening to the commentators it sounds they are very prepared for the action

  • "Not only is Goldberg a killer and a monster, but a thinking man's wrestler as well".

    Tony Schiavone was the best

  • regal owned goldberg, he made him look ridiculous

  • @yawgmoth13 in what match? Because he held his own pretty well in this match.

  • Obviously if Regal was shooting on Goldberg he would have fucked him over completley. Gorldberg is stage hard Regal is the real thing.

  • Also you can see how much Regal is holding back on Goldie. Just look how Regal wrestles with Benoit and Finlay. I know Goldberg has more power but guys like Regal would take the pain and wait the Goldie to get tied and pick him apart.

  • You know guys like Regal and Finlay would love to wrestle a guy like Brock Lesnar because not only is he big and is a really wrestler(NCAA CHAMP). They would like to see how good a match with a guy like that would be.

  • This match was terrible! Regal botched this up badly..

  • @lyallbay1203 He didn't botch it. He just didn't want to get squashed. He challenged him (broke script) and ended up getting fired for it but it showed the goldberg did have the skill.

  • @lyallbay1203 Actually, Regal was teaching Goldberg a much needed lesson, there. Just because he was getting the big push didn't mean he was really all that.

  • whatever whatever... in the end, this was a good match.

  • Yeah, I don't buy that Goldberg broke script... in the first 3 seconds of the match. Regal clearly had it out for him right away and the Goldberg saying huh, what, huh what, is lets do this for real if you want... boy.

Love 'em both. Great moment and Regal went on to have a huge long career with WWE now thanks to this and what happened after.

  • is he steven or william regal WTF ?

  • @JMXXL

He started out as Steven Regal in 1993, and used that ring name until his return to the WWF in 2000, where he started out as Steven William Regal, before (shortly after) shortening his ring name to just William Regal, which has remained so ever since.

  • @MrDCWood lol what a weirdo

  • Regal explained in his book that he and Goldberg had laid out the match beforehand. Goldberg forgot parts of the match and apologized to Regal afterwards.

  • This match was fantastic... proof that "the berg" could wrestle... as long as someone as good as Regal would work with him.

  • pretty sure triple h didn't bitch and act unprofessional when he had to job to the freaking ultimate warrior.....(AT WRESTLEMANAI!!!!!)

  • I love Regal, but this was unprofessional by him. I understand where he's coming from, as he is one of the more talented guys in wrestling history and he was being used as a jobber, but still, take your lumps like a man and don't try to ruin the guy who's gonna make the company a lot of money.

  • WOW, so many morons posting here. This was a shoot match you idiots, and Regal got fired because he broke script!!!

Goldberg maintained kayfabe and wrestled the match like a pro.

All the counters are impromptu and Regal's whole aim was to make Goldberg look like an untalented jock. Goldberg did pretty good against Regal who was aiming to embarrass and humiliate Goldberg for real.

  • @cyguration Thank you.... seriously! I thought Goldberg did damn good too against it, i don't really think he was expecting any of that either. If regal wanted to get pissed at someone, he should have gotten mad at the company for making him a jobber, not try and make goldberg look bad. And he still got jackhammered.. nice!

  • i have never seen a wrestler botch as much as goldberg does....wtf wcw?

  • i will give botchberg one thing....he was one of the greatest gimmicks during that time(keyword...gimmick)the way wcw pushed him was insane....but regal basically exposed him of what he truly was a no talent hack building his career off of squashing more deserving talent

  • Regal got fired, because of this.

  • oh man you guyds know the details of this match and what REALLY went on? i didn't read all comments yet but i'm sure some know the politics behind it, ill post this anyway and read after lol.

  • Regal had the moment with Goldberg where he did a little unscheduled mat wrestling. I think the only reason why this is considered, is because Goldberg didn't know what was going on. Regal could lead a dead man through a believable sequence, and I believe that is what he was trying to do. But Goldberg flopped around, and ended up looking like an idiot. I remember watching this live on Nitro,

I remember watching this live on Nitro, and didn't know about it, but it sure looked like something was wron

  • @edreese1977 Dolph Ziggler is now a former World Champ.

  • yes goldberg was a great force (read:gimmick) back in the WCW days, but....

regal played with goldberg, regal directed the match, goldberg only followed his lead.

regal made the match. prob one of the longest matches goldberg had when he was in WCW

  • Other than the failed attempt at a neckbreaker, I feel that this was a very enjoyable match. Regal told a good story and Goldberg demonstrated that he has the ability to work a decent, believable match.

  • @Crankshaft87 And Regal was given an ear-beating from Eric for it. He was simply supposed to get squashed.

  • damn Goldberg was the worst Wrestler of all time.. OF ALL TIME!

  • @xXHayateIKageXx goldberg was awesome, compare him to the talentless ppl like the miz, alex riley, dolph ziggler, goldberg dominated, whereas the no-talents i just mentioned needed help to win titles, except ziggler because he hasn't won zilch so far

  • @xXHayateIKageXx I could point to the kid with the prosthetic leg, Hornswaggle, or Eugene. But instead I'll say the worst of all time is clearly the Miz. You think Miz is a better wrestler than Goldberg? I'm not even going to get into who's a more interesting and watchable character....

  • anyone notice how bigggg regal was? boy wonda what happened pharmaceutically to stop that

  • anyone notice how bigggg regal was? boy wonda what happened pharmaceutically to stop that?

  • I dont understand why some people said goldberg has no wrestling ability, i see this match and he wrestler better than most of the wwe current superstars.

  • I think Goldberg came outta this looking more rounded. He held his own against a real wrestler.

  • Well I think that Goldberg held his own here.

  • Goldberg > all other wwe superstars

  • good match by both wrestlers

  • Regal looks sluggish in this match . Not surprising he was rather unfit during his entire WCW stint (I don't use plurals because his second run in WCW is hardly worth mentioning). Despite that, Goldberg is the one that comes across looking like crap. If you can botch a simple one leg take down (2:56) so badly that someone has to resort to an standard armbar to cover for your ass then you're definitely championship material. God help us if he ever becomes broke enough to agree to return.

  • Regal would be a world champion if he were in his prime right now. Look how they're pushing these UK guys now: Wade Barrett, Drew Mcintyre, Sheamus. He's much better wrestlers than they are, and at least equal in mic skills to Wade.

  • Goldberg was pretty terrible but not as bad as people made it out to be. I think this was around the time that I was watching WWF more and didn't see it live. He did some pretty impressive moves for him in this match but he basically botched every move that was done to him.

  • @garymaster42 If you think Goldberg wasn't as bad as most people think he is, then I'd like you to tell me what exactly you've been watching? NOTHING about that mans in ring work rate was anywhere near "impressive" as you state. 5 min squash matches, where the other guys have to work their asses off to make him look good, does NOT scream impressive to me. He is, was & always will be nothing but an over hyped skid mark that hilariously believes his own hype. Watch NJPW or indys & learn something

  • @MitsiMits Wow. Just said this match wasn't as bad as I thought based on what everyone said. I've seen a good amount of Goldberg matches that were terrible. This wasn't that much worse than any other of his matches.

  • @garymaster42 Whether it's this match (or any other match in where his ass had to be carried to the moon and back by whoever had the "pleasure" of working with him) he was a joke who never belonged in a ring. Simple spots for a simple clown who tried to live his gimmick and epically failed in all aspects.....

  • @MitsiMits I know. I never liked Goldberg either.

  • alot of real things are going on in this ring

  • The match that got Regal fired from WCW.

  • What a shoot! Guys, this was Goldberg's greatest match bar none.

  • To SillySantaHat: Bret Hart and Steven Regal have different styles of wrestling. Bret Hart was taught in Calgary, Alberta to compete using endurance, technique and speed as a way to express his abilities. Steven Regal was taught in Blackpool, England to compete using technique, leverage and european wrestling maneuvers. Canadian and American rely mostly on strength and speed. European techniques that are utilised come from Judo and catch and catch style wrestling. Pay attention to his throws.

  • I am not a Goldberg fan, but he did hold his own in this match. Now time to go watch the other one.

  • @SillySantaHat Nevermind, apparently this is the one that I wanted to see. He was supposedly fired for not letting Goldberg squash him here.

  • Goldberg sucks SOOOO much, regal shows how awful a wrestler goldberg is, just because you have size doesn't mean I'm impressed I[m really glad goldberg isn't wasting our time anymore " My name is Goldberg! I got pecks! I should be in wrestling! oops I'm injured again because I have no in ring skills"
