  • very impressive, but I don't think this game could a have saved the saturn, it didn't save the dreamcast after all...and on top of that the dreamcast had better graphic and I don't think the saturn version could have been fully voiced. Well we never know! and I still can't finish the second one knowing that there won't be a sequel!!!!

  • Saturn was an amazing system too bad developers didn't step their game up.

  • Wow, These graphics look almost early Dreamcast-level, way ahead of their time, Of course as noted, the reason is the Saturn was a very powerful machine just absurdly hard to program for (With 2 CPUs and 6 other processors...)

  • He kinda reminds me of Yuske Urameshi. Why?

  • its using 2 cpu and 2 graphics chips so it looks a lot better than anything the ps1 and n64 could do, but its really hard to program for the saturn so most games where rushed crappy games

they should have had 2 versions the saturn and enhanced dreamcast version, i bet if saturn lasted another year or 2 it would have done much better

  • Really really impressive...i'm not 100% sure but i don't think i ever saw anything even on N64 that looked this good.

  • better than the dreamcast version

  • Soooooooooo glad they waited.

  • Poor Segata Sanshiro, he must have trained all his life for this...

  • By reference, the detail is so amazing, it seems to just run circles around SquareSoft's FFVIII, in terms of character design, and actually making every environment real-time!

  • Those faces look way too good to be Saturn. Isn't this just an optimized real time video (like Turok on N64)?

  • still wondering how sega was able to fuck up two awesome consoles in a row with their bad marketing :(

  • Long live the saturn....

  • What could have been....... well never know

  • Wait a minute. Isn't this Shenmue II? I don't remember seeing the dude in the blue shirt in the first game at all, interesting.

  • I thought this was only released for Dreamcast?

  • everyone who was talking looked like they were saying blah blah blah

  • 0:53 THIS IS MY SRS FACE

  • Wow! This was just like seeing the beta version of ICO!

(Yes ICO was originally going to be on the Playstation)

  • Land di just woke up in a bad mood in this version.

  • it`s so saaaaad

  • this console gen is very lazy back then it was better.

  • wow.Such detail went into consoles back then. I mean now our high def consoles have games they look great 360/ps3. But the effort put into the consoles back then was unimaginable which makes current generation of gaminig seem lazy on details.Because a console of that calibur was already tough enough to use to get these type of results.amazing.You guys dont know the effort they put into this game

  • @kick808gs - Adding to the fact you'll need to code things in assembly just to get a decent speed.

  • Also this cost a shitload of cash to make on the dreamcast and sega would not want to give something so costly to the slowly dying sega saturn

  • Graphics quite the same as dreamcast but im glad it was released on dreamcast

  • that is incredible so I guess they began making it for saturn and then reserved it for dreamcast?

  • psx aint got shit on this

  • Good for Sega unfortunately lots of power mean nothing if it is used improperly.

  • I kinda wish it had been done on the Sega Saturn. Looks like it really would have been the most interesting Saturn game of all time. I would have REALLY enjoyed it!

I can imagine that it would go to TOP TOP TOP dollar today had it been released at the end of Sega Saturn's lifespan!

  • wow! Looks like the Sega Saturn can do more than I thought.

  • Part of the $70 million budget spent in the end was used in this version too. AM2 spent the time to use the hardware well (there was even a SS VF3). Overall, the 3D performance was not better by any means than the PSX, it was harder to develop for, that's all.

It was a 2D fighter fan's best friend though. The swan song in July of 99 was SF Zero 3, which remains the best version of the game (better than arcade even).

Shenmue deserved a better home, and it got it.

  • I have underestimated sega for so long

  • why did people say this suck, this game was awesome

  • @roboguy75 - People who said it sucked are the brain-dead FPS fans who need blood and guts and guns and bombs firing constantly to be entertained. The concept of a sweet, touching story with artistically gorgeous graphics is foreign to them.

  • this would have looked great and might have actually given the saturn a better chance at staying on the market

  • Pretty impressive for a 3d saturn game , although i can't read comments like "psx couldn't match this".

For example , compare games like : Spyro the dragon , Crash bandicoot 3(it had a software z buffer implementation equally fast as HW Zbuf!)/CTR (and many MANY other games) with the SS version of Shenmue...

    Uh , well..

Just thank AM2 for not releasing this thing on SS otherwise we would have missed one of the best games ever.

  • wish they made this version then put it to the dreamcast aswell with updated graphics , i love my sega consoles i own 4 saturns and 3 dreamcasts lol long live sega lol, and this game really proves that the saturn had the power if put in the right hands

  • Here's proof that the saturn could match the psx in 3D graphics if programmed properly. Had they released it for the saturn, it definitely would have done better. One of the best games ever!!

    P.S. : Where's Shenmue 3????????? When?????

  • graphically this game was impossible to put on the saturn at the time. developers had a hard time making this game on the saturn because it was a difficult system to work with

  • ldont make laugh!

  • @the804kid Who was giving you a thumbs down? It's true, dammit.

  • I didnt give a thumbs down but I do disagree because if you realy watch this vid youll see differences from the dreamcast version. like ryo openin a trap door in the front garden assumin it leads to the pheonix mirror. So the original game would have been alot different to the DC version (abit like comparing resident evil ps1 version to the gamecube version).

  • I never knew the Saturn was capable of thsi =o

  • lol i dont know man people are weird on here

  • Best game ever made. Period.

  • Pretty much one of the most incredible incredible demos I have ever seen. This is what 1997, at the latest? Impressive. The Saturn was a good system if you took the time to work with it. Imagine going back and developing games on a system like the Saturn now, knowing what we now know, and having the technology we have. I think it would be so incredible and fun.

  • It's depressing that Sega made so many stupid moves back then, if they had come out with Shenmue on the Saturn and released more copies of Panzer Dragoon Saga, the Saturn would've put up a better fight against Sony and Nintendo.

  • Saturn was at end so the developers waited for the dreamcast a more powerfull system!

The games took his time but in the end was considered the best dreamcast games ever!

  • the reason shenmue never came to the saturn is because the saturn was inadiquate for the span of the game, you would need countless discs just to complete the first game plus when am2 created virtua fighter which proved 3d games could be brought to home consoles that convinced sony to go ahead with the psx and improve on the saturns fatal flaws. for me gaming truely died when sega moved out of the hardware market.

  • In some fairness to Sega, the Saturn should have been more powerful than the Playstation. The only problem was that it was a pain in the anus to program for, so many of the games were lacking.

If you notice, a lot of japanese imports for the Saturn have some great graphics.

  • For me its the same. After sega left the hardware market i could not really care alot about the new consoles.

ps. does anyone know where to get the music from this video in high quality?

  • Agreed. I love Sega. I play my Saturn everyday.

  • Wow, nice to see some elements of the game didn't change, but also nice to see somethings that did change.

Aww! Lan Di isn't as scary looking in this version. And Lol at Iwao's death, he just suddenly drops on the floor (0:54)

  • I would trade my mom for a completed version of this!!!

  • this looks even bertter then many ds games.

  • yeah because it isn't a gameboy or ds, its a freakin' sega saturn game duuh. ofcourse it looks better than a ds game

  • okay you have me there, but ds is suposed to be 64 bit machine like a n64 but i have to admit sega saturn is a beast of a console it had much, but nobody would have expected this from a saturn, from a saturn that couldn't handle 3d like a psx,but this looks beyond psx.

  • this is better then ps1 even better Nintendo 64 seriosly what we are whatching here is the True power of the Sega Saturn, also Panzer Dreagon Saga has graphics that look better the ps1 and Nintendo 64, seriosly this proves thet the Saturn was a graphical Beast!!

  • pd saga is to discuss, while it looks great it was to shorts and had to big worlds, altought it was one of the most relaxed games sega put out,it looks cool and stuff but i think iv'e seen beter on saturn.

  • Agreed, though the N64 could do interpolation ;)

But yes, this might be the only real example of the Sega Saturn pushing it's full 3D capabilities. Kinda sad thinking about it.

  • wow this game looks amazing i may have too burn and run a swap trick on my saturn too see this for myself.

  • i wish they could have released this for the saturn and then the dreamcast version (like they did with the sonic 3D) then the second part just for dreamcast. they could show the true power of the saturn and maintain those fans that gave up before dreamcast. that way they could make sure they will sell the next system " taking care of the fan base"

  • Shenmue was not game--it was a work of art.

  • So games can't be works of art?

  • Really wish the Saturn had done better. This game would have rocked the socks off of any PS game.

  • man the graphics something psx couldnt match.

  • yep not bad for a system that supposedly couldnt do 3D as good as the psx huh

  • yeah they say and then it porves tons above psx quality.

  • gues that story was complete lazyness from developers and bulshit helped in to the world to claim the psx to a higher purpose, psx really has pretty many boring games.

  • @aryinc

Yea,the graphics are great, too bad that the video was low res.

Well maybe thats the resolution that Shenmue for Saturn was suppose to be played...

Anyway the graphics are awsome for saturn, well textures are in some parts bad, well the polygon ammount is great...I dont know why some people dont like shenmue...its a freacking simulation of somebodies life!

  • HOLY FUCKIN' SHIT!

  • i remember i unlocked this on shenmue2. was delighted

  • yea was a video about a beta version or a version never relasaed for saturn

  • waaaaaaaaaaaa il a l aire trop bien

  • the best !!!

  • beautiful

  • Great Video I wonder if it could of saved the Saturn I bet it must of had like 5or6 discs

  • Sega should make a new system with a choice of a new Alex Kidd or Shenmue 3 Screw Ps3 I hope sony drops out SEGA!!!!

  • that was AMAZING!
