a very good video of the good old routemaster bus . i love the sound of the single- stroke bus conductors bell heard in the video. any body know where i can get one?.
The majority of routemasters where fitted with auto gearboxes when new, the sound from a the little 5.9 cummins B/Allison isn't a great sound compared to original aec but better than euro 5 boxes found in volvo b7tls/dennis tridents. Although TFL are looking athe possibility of shipping out the cummins in favour of a Euro 5 replacement engine - it sounds bad but just shows how adaptable it is and how advanced it was for 1954 (that they could forsee cleaner smaller engines being the norm!
Hart brakeing I did hundreds of miles during my time living in London in the 70,s on the routemasters also had the plesure of riding the A E C,s round Sheperds Bush green, too and from work at Hanger Lane Ealing, London wont be the same anymore. At the time a months travel card was £4 so on a saturday I used to take a different route and travel round London, I started with route 1 Then route 2 and so on till I found my way round london
As you can tell, this is NOT how to restore a Routemaster bus. The transmission is new and it's automatic. I don't mind power steerting, but it doesn't have it's grand Routemaster sound in the engine. With the automatic transmisson, it really ruins it. Yes, it does make the bus easier to drive with the transmission being automatic, but when it comes to restoring something that vintage, you have to be as accurate as possible.
The sound you hear onboard a Routemaster is mainly from the amidships SCG GB32 gearbox. The sound wasn't that different whether the bus had a AEC, Leyland, Iveco, Cummins C series or Scania engine. However the bus shown is around 50 RMs that were refurbished and fitted with a Cummins B series engine bolted directly to an Allison automatic gearbox, which is why they sound like Dennis Darts! The casings of the original SCG 'boxes became porous. The Routemaster suspension still beats modern buses!
Oh my god, someone has fitted this bus with a Black&Decker Quatro motor, it sounds horrible. AEC 10times nicer. Take the engine back to Argos for a refund!
my aunt used to drive these and she loved them and she seems to have passed that love down to me. I hate those Dennis engines in them, it makes them just a bus rather than a HERITAGE routemaster
It's a great shame that these buses were withdrawn from normal London bus routes after many had been refurbished to such an high standard. The 'Dennis Dart' sound effects are evident on this video.
