On the asteroid after defusing the three fusion-torches, you go to the main base, which is this place, and the Batarians will be everywhere. After fighting a little bit, you'll get to this dialogue.

Is there any benefit to letting him go to save the hostages? I ended up attacking on my play through it as well.

I don't know if there is any benefit to letting him go, other than getting Paragon points and saving Kate(the hostage.) I wanted to attack him because I was curious if you could save the hostages by killing him before he detonated the charges. Like if he were to 'detonate them when you're about to kill him' kind of thing.
